The Ask the Faculty To submit a question for the College of Education faculty, please send your question to Angela Turk ( aturk@gsu.edu ). As questions are submitted and answered by faculty, they will be posted online along with a link to our Ask the Faculty series archive How do I effectively manage stress in my daily life? A.
There are two major methods of reducing stress: preventive and combative. It is best, of course, to prevent stress, but this is not always possible. When we are already caught up in stressful situations, we should shift to promising combative methods. There are two principle preventive practices: making wise decisions to avoid unnecessary stressors and maintaining an adequate supply of energy. The stress response is a natural outcome of perceiving that our resources are inadequate for the demands we are facing. Energy is a major coping resource for, as Vince Lombardi once said to his Green Bay Packers, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all." When we are fatigued, every demand seems stressful. It is, therefore, important to build and protect our energy. We build energy largely through exercise and proper nutrition, and we protect it through adequate rest. National reports of the health habits of Americans suggest that in general we get poor marks on all three counts.

Welcome to Choosing the Best
What We Provide
Choosing the Best provides three age-appropriate abstinence curricula that are known for being easy to use, dynamic, and engaging. They’re also proven tools in transforming attitudes and behavior of teens about premarital sex. Video vignettes, real life case studies, role plays, interactive exercises and small-group discussions create a directed learning environment that encourages "self-discovery". For more information, click on the programs and products above.

How We Started
In 1992 Bruce and Donna Cook served as chairpersons of the Health and Safety Committee at their son's school. A sex education program for the middle school was identified as one of the pressing and critical needs. Parent and faculty surveys indicated an overwhelming majority desired an abstinence curriculum. Working with school counselors, educators, parents, and health experts, Bruce developed Choosing the Best , which was field-tested in his son's class. The response from the students, parents, and teachers was enthusiastically and overwhelmingly positive.

New Figures Show Abstinence Emphasis Working
The number of teen pregnancies among youngsters attending upper elementary and middle schools, ages 10-14, declined 12 percent from 1997 through 1999, according to Bruce Cook of Choosing the Best , a non-profit group that provides abstinence-focused sex education and training to encourage healthy relationships. Cook, citing new figures released by the Georgia Department of Human Resources Department of Public Health, added:
  • There was a 13 percent drop in teen pregnancies among high school students ages 15-17.
In Muscogee County in Columbus, Georgia, a unique middle school Choosing the Best program that focused on quality of teacher training, parental involvement with student-parent homework assignments and the use of Choosing the Best in all middle schools, reduced teen pregnancies 38 percent from 1997 to 1999, Cook said. Choosing the Best Middle School Program has been used in 41 Georgia school districts.
