FIRE WEATHER EDUCATION:
WELCOME This Homepage is intended to stimulate the study of fire weather at various educational levels, to include pre-college. This page is maintained to foster cooperation between several professional groups, to include educators and meteorologists specializing in fire and forest meteorology. This page was developed in conjunction with a presentation made at the 22nd Conference on Agricultural and Forest Meteorology with Symposium on Fire and Forest Meteorology, 28 January-2 February 1996, Atlanta, Georgia A synopsis of this presentation is included.
BACKGROUND
In many areas of the United States, wildfires take a toll in human life and property. Wildfires and weather are interrelated. Weather conditions can directly contribute to the occurrence of wildfires such as through lightning strikes or indirectly such as by an extended dry spell or drought that contributes to the availability of fuel. A large wildfire, or conflagration, is often capable of modifying the local weather conditions or producing "its own weather". Photo of a forest wildfire Source NASA While many of these fires could not be prevented, some of the loss in life and property could be reduced if appropriate awareness and planning were made well before the fire strikes. The awareness and planning efforts represent an educational effort. Part of this education requires study of weather topics. Awareness of the sequences of weather conditions that produce conditions conducive of wildfires. Even attempts at escape and fire suppression are influenced by various local weather events that are directly modified by the conflagration.

We are a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information and advice to keep evolution in the science classroom and "scientific creationism" out. While there are organizations that oppose "scientific creationism" as part of their general goals (such as good science education, or separation of church and state), NCSE is the only national organization that specializes in this issue. When teachers, parents, school boards, the press and others need information and help, they turn to NCSE.
While most of NCSE's work involves defending evolution against attacks, we also work to increase public understanding of evolution and science "as a way of knowing." We also have programs to help teachers who want to improve their teaching of evolution. Here you'll find information and resources for all these activities.
