CLIMATE: Georgia has a transitional climate from subtropical along the coastal regions to continental in eastern Georgia. Along the coast average annual precipitation varies from 1,200 to 2,800 mm (47 to 110 inches) to 600 to 800 mm (24 to 31.5 inches) in the mountainous regions. Average temperature ranges are from 3 to 6 degrees Celsius (37 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 23 to 26 degrees Celsius (73 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit) in August.

In an analysis of more than 700,000 prison sentences, the newspaper said there are huge disparities between average prison sentences given for the same crimes in Georgia's 46 judicial circuits. The toughest circuits - most in rural Georgia - give sentences that are at least two to three times as long, and up to six times as long, as the shortest sentences. "The disparities are legally and morally unacceptable," said McDonough lawyer Alex Crumbley, a former judge and state senator. "Why should some kid in Bainbridge get 18 years from breaking into a home and someone in Atlanta get two? That's fundamentally unfair. You might as well let each circuit pass its own sentencing laws." Atlanta area prosecutors say they are frustrated with the short sentences, but they complain that a growing number of caseloads without corresponding increases in resources result in shorter prison sentences so their cases will move through the court system.

Robert Schleifer Wins Georgia Level of National Geography Bee by Dawn White On April 9, 1999, Robert Schleifer, 13, of Hall County Home Educators, won the Georgia state level of the National Geography Bee, sponsored by National Geographic and Bank One. Over 100,000 students in the state of Georgia competed at the local levels in Georgia this year. Local level winners then took a written qualifying test to determine the top 100 students in the state, which included 5 home schooled students. On April 9 these students met at Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta. The morning preliminary rounds narrowed the field to 10 students. The final and championship rounds were held in the afternoon. Robert did not miss any questions the entire day. The question that determined that he was the winner was “The Kara Kum Canal, an 850-mile long irrigation canal that carries water from the Amu Darya toward the Caspian Sea irrigates what country?
