Digitization at the University of Georgia Libraries
Nan McMurry, Assistant Head, Computer Hardware Imaging and Preservation Services (CHIPS) UGA Main Library
Since 1994 the University of Georgia Libraries have been digitizing selected materials from our collections for the purposes of both preservation and access. Digitized items are presented as images, searchable text files, or a combination of the two, depending on the nature of the material. Two databases are already available to the University community and to the public at large through GALILEO (GeorgiA LIbrary Learning Online.) They are Georgia Government Publications and Georgia Historic Newspapers. Other digitization projects currently in progress include the following:
  • Southeastern Native American Documents (1763-1842) the 100 most significant books on Georgia history and culture 19th- and early 20th-century photographs of Athens and North Georgia Arts of the United States
In addition to converting or creating texts in a digital environment, we also employ SGML (Standard Generalized Mark-Up Language) tagging to enhance their searchability. SGML tagging differs from HTML in that it is primarily concerned with the content of a text rather than its appearance. Texts tagged in SGML support more sophisticated searching than searching for words or phrases alone. For example, searches can be limited to a particular kind of newspaper article, a headline, a quotation, a footnote, etc. What is displayed to the public differs by the type of material. For materials such as newspapers, in which the layout of text on the page is distinctive and cannot be fully conveyed by a transcribed copy, the original images of the pages are displayed as search results while the marked-up transcriptions are used for searching behind the scenes. For texts such as books, the marked-up transcription is displayed, since it differs little in appearance from a page in a printed book. Handwritten documents are distinctive in appearance and sometimes difficult to decipher, so we offer an electronic facsimile of the original along with a transcribed copy for users to view.

18. Electronic Reserves At The University Of Georgia Libraries
Electronic Reserves at the University of georgia libraries. Rachel Nabulsi,UGA Main Library Access Services Coordinator, and Cynthia
http://www.eits.uga.edu/tti/review/2002-1/Library.html
Electronic Reserves at the University of Georgia Libraries
Rachel Nabulsi, UGA Main Library Access Services Coordinator, and Cynthia Prosser, UGA Science Library Reserve Desk Supervisor In the spring of 2001, the Reserve Desks were given the mandate to develop and implement an Electronic Reserves program. The idea of developing Electronic Reserves had been discussed for several years within the Libraries. In accordance with this, Rachel Nabulsi (Access Services/Main Library) and Cynthia Prosser (Access Services/Science Library) began planning this process. Our goal was to be in full production for Fall Semester 2001. In considering our course we put as paramount importance ease of use by our instructors and students. We also wanted Electronic Reserves to be fully integrated into normal Reserves workflow and use.
Basic early decisions
The early decisions on how to proceed were surprisingly easy. Over a year of monitoring a LISTSERV devoted to E-Reserves had given us some background on what did and did not work.
Host system
The UGA Libraries uses Voyager software to support GIL, our online library system. Correspondence with Reserves staff at institutions which also used Voyager library system software, and who had implemented E-Reserves, gave us further insight into how we could use our existing system to host E-Reserves links. Investigation into other options, such as ERes by Docutek and ImageServer by Endeavor, showed that they were cost prohibitive and did not offer the level of integration that use of our existing library software would. Voyager offers the ability to create links from bibliographic records in the system to a Web page or other html or electronic format document. The Reserve Desk already were routinely creating bibliographic records for photocopied articles, notes, and other Reserve material submitted by instructors, so the ability to link these records to a scanned version of the document was exactly what we needed.
