Local schools offer one-day excuse for deploying military service members’ children
AFMC News Service Release 0132
Released Jan. 29, 2003 By Lanorris Askew
Warner Robins Air Logistics Center Public Affairs ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AFMCNS) — Deploying parents and their children here will have a few extra hours to spend together thanks to a plan devised by the Houston County School system and the Robins Air Force Base Public Affairs Office. Charles Holloway, Houston County School System superintendent, approved one day’s excused absence to any child of a deploying military member, according to Beth Burris, community and school affairs director for the Houston County Board of Education. “We want to do anything we can to make this tough time easier for our students,” Burris said. “They have to go through a lot of transitions and other challenges that other students don’t have to, and we want to help ease them through this transition.” Burris said school officials have also alerted school counselors to the fact that there may be students who need to come in and talk to them.

Go to the Forums or Chat The Augusta Chronicle Fort Gordon, based on a 55,600-acre tract southwest of Augusta, has always been a focus of national defense. With the threat of world war growing half a century ago, a contract was let to build Camp Gordon on May 5, 1941. It was named for Georgia's John B. Gordon, one of Robert E. Lee's generals, who served the state after the Civil War as governor and U.S. senator. Construction wasn't completed until 1942. But days after Pearl Harbor, the camp's first commander was ordered to occupy the post at once, even though ceilings and walls still had to be built to shelter him and his men. One of the first units to train at the camp was the famous 4th Infantry Division. Featured advertisers Your Allstate Insurance dealer!

Pitfalls of Studying Abroad
Asian Officials Say Some Students Duped by Unscrupulous Agents
By Thomas Crampton International Herald Tribune UBOL RATCHATHANI, Thailand - When Navin Rattaseri, 16, was sent from Thailand to study in the United States, he expected newfound liberty, not a military nightmare. ''I was so excited to get freedom from my parents and actually go to America,'' he said. As advised by his uncle's long-time friend, he enrolled in a school in the south of the United States, a region where high temperature and heavy humidity often resemble Thailand's tropical climate. Within hours of arrival, however, Mr. Navin's hair was sliced off, a stiff new uniform was issued and he discovered to his horror that he was attending a military academy. ''It was a very big surprise and it made me so very unhappy,'' Mr. Navin said. ''In Thailand, people are flexible, but at Georgia Military College, they really punish you for being late.'' Even worse, he didn't speak a word of English. ''I had to follow people in order to know where and when to eat.'' Fortunately, after just four months, Mr. Navin convinced his uncle's friend to let him switch to another school. ''I got fluent in English in just one month because it was a do or die situation,'' he said. ''But I do not think it is a good experience for anyone to have.''

The 6-2, 205-pound Nelson — whose older brother Roosevelt is a redshirt sophomore linebacker for the Tigers this fall — liked the idea of staying close to his sibling, according to Crestwood coach Keith Crolley.
