Teaching Teaching New program helps graduates receive certification to teach. By Victor Rogers The story is ironic, but familiar. The demand for math and science teachers in the Georgia school system is high. But an engineer, physicist or chemist with years of professional experience is not considered qualified to teach math or science to Georgia middle- or high-school students. That could be changing. With a mandate from Gov. Zell Miller, Georgia's Professional Standards Commission has revamped the teacher certification process to reduce the amount of red tape. And Georgia Tech's Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) is making the path to a teaching career more clearly defined for Tech students. Carolyn C. Thorsen, director of CEISMC's Pre-College Programs, is working with Georgia State University officials to develop a teacher preparation program for Georgia Tech students. Tech science and engineering faculty have determined which courses meet the basic math and science requirements for teacher certification. By cross-registering at Georgia State and taking the recommended courses, Georgia Tech students will graduate with a teaching certificate in addition to their degree. Georgia State University professors will teach the education courses on Tech's campus.
