On this page click the question you want answered in further detail.
What is Geothermal Energy?
Geothermal Energy can be understood as the energy stored as heat within the earth. (click here for the technical definition) When the earth was formed 5 billion years ago from a cloud of hot gas, it was very hot indeed. Ever since then the earth has been cooling down, loosing it's heat to the cold reaches of space. However alot of this heat still remains and can be used as a source of energy for the ever increasing demands of civilisation.
How do we use geothermal heat?
This is a very good question, and is still a matter for continued research. There are many ways of getting the energy to the surface in a usable form. At present they all involve the flow of hot fluids to the surface were they are used as a source of heat or to generate electricity. The fluids may be present naturally near hot rocks or they may have to be pumped there.
How much geothermal energy is there?

Mankind and the Environment
Geothermal Energy
Truly The Low-Cost Alternative
The real cost of energy in the U.S. is not at all reflected in what wc pay at the gas pump or on our utility bills. Much of the true costs of energy, using today's fuel mix, are hidden. If the costs of corrosion damage, health impacts, crop losses, radioactive waste disposal, military expenditures to protect foreign energy sources, and direct economic subsidies to the fossilfuel and nuclear industries were totalled and added to the energy bills we see, the price would astound us. The answer to decreasing the true cost of energy is not to hide part of the cost but to alter our energy-use patterns and fuel sources to bring in much more renewable energy and conservation. If we changed our methods of utility regulation to require integrated-resource planning with all environmental and other hidden energy costs explicitly accounted for, it would be possible for utilities to use more renewable-energy resources economically. Our total energy costs would decrease and we would have a much cleaner environment. Accelerated development of renewable resources and conservation are the lowest-cost options in some cases, even with the hidden subsidies for the conventional energies. If hidden subsidies were made visible in energy pricing, geothermal energy would be seen for what it really is the energy bargain of the century.

Geothermal Energy: The Alternative of the Future
By: Christopher Bailey and Jacqueline Kerkman ( Honors Colloquium , Spring 1999)
When the energy crisis hit Americans in the 1970's, people were scrambling to find ways to conserve energy. The crisis brought to attention the very real shortage of fossil fuels. Gas and oil prices skyrocketed, and Americans looked for ways to save energy. They started producing smaller cars, driving less, and turning down their thermostats. Also, they started to examine alternate energy sources, such as solar, geothermal, and biomass. For a while, Americans were making a conscious effort to cut back on the use of fossil fuels. However, when gas and oil prices started to go back down in the early eighties, many of the conservation ideas were forgotten. In the minds of most Americans, the energy crisis had been solved because they could now afford to use fossil fuels again. Looking into the next century, we can see energy shortage problems starting to resurface. The possibility of another energy crisis is very real; however, this one will be different. It will not be a matter of fossil fuels being too expensive, it will be a matter of fossil fuels no longer being a resource. Our gas-powered cars, factories, and heating systems are using fossil fuels much faster than the dinosaurs are turning to coal. The way things are going now, we won't make it through the next century before running out of our fossil fuels. The problems with fossil fuels go beyond their rapid depletion. The pollution from burning fossil fuels is really taking a toll on the

geothermal energy. geothermal energy is renewable heat energy from deep in the earth. geothermalenergy is (very close to) renewable as opposed to fossil fuels.
http://csf.colorado.edu/students/Renaa.Hans/geothermal.html
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is renewable heat energy from deep in the earth. Even though it has several advantages over conventional energy sources, only a small fraction of the resource is in use today.
Hydrothermal energy is today economic at a number of sites. It can be used to generate electricity or to produce hot water for direct use. Many countries, including the United States, Japan, France, New Zealand and Iceland and some developing countries in Latin America and Africa, are today taking advantage of this resource. However, the geothermal energy's potential as a substitute for current energy sources is much larger because of the high energy content in hot dry rocks, magma and geopressured geothermal energy. Further research and development need to be done in order to make the use of these resources economically feasible.
Advantages
The main advantage of the use of geothermal energy over conventional energy sources is the environmental benefits. Geothermal power plants generates just a fraction of Sulfur-, Carbon-dioxide- and Nitrogen- oxide-emissions as compared to fossil power plants. Geothermal power plants also require very little land compared to that needed by other energy sources. Geothermal plants are also modular, and can be installed in increments as needed.
Geothermal energy is (very close to) renewable as opposed to fossil fuels. When geothermal energy is used to generate energy, the spent geothermal fluid is injected back into the peripheral parts of the reservoir to help maintain reservoir pressure. Because the reservoir's temperature will decrease by a very small fraction we cannot theoretically say that the energy is totally renewable. However, this temperature decrease is so small that its practically renewable. When a geothermal reservoir is used for direct-heat applications the heated water is usually fed into a heat exchanger before injected back into the earth. This water is then used for home and greenhouse heating and a variety of other uses. The consumption of groundwater is zero.

Renewable energy - such as wind and solar energy - is energy that can never be used up. Unlike traditional energy fuel sources such as coal, oil and natural gas, which are finite, renewable sources are either infinite (the sun and wind) or constantly renewing, like municipal solid waste. Sources of Renewable Energy Biomass Geothermal Hydropower Photovoltaics ... Alternative Fuel Vehicles
Biomass
If you've ever enjoyed the warmth of a campfire, you've used biomass energy. Biomass uses the energy in organic matter such as plants. Other sources of biomass energy include agricultural and wood waste, municipal waste, and landfill gas. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratories, biomass supplies 3 percent of total U.S. energy needs, almost 10,000 MW of electric generating capacity (1993 figures). More about Biomass Energy
Geothermal
Geothermal energy is used both for power generation and for heating. In 1990, the U.S. had 62 geothermal electric plants generating 2,350 MW of electricity. Geothermal power generation requires high-temperature resources that are found mostly in the western part of the county. Low-temperature (meaning less than 130°C) sources are more widespread and can be used in direct-use applications such as heat pumps, district heating, space heating and cooling, aquaculture, industrial processes and domestic hot water. Heat pumps are the fastest growing direct use application of geothermal power. More about Geothermal Energy
Hydropower
One-half of all the renewable energy used in the United States today comes from hydropower. Hydropower uses the energy of flowing water to turn a turbine which in turn rotates a generator thus producing electricity. Hydropower spurred industrial development in the 19th century. In the 1930s, 30 percent of America's generating capacity came from hydro. Currently, hydro accounts for 12 percent of the country's generating capacity.

Geothermal Power Project
Continental Ridge Resources Inc. (KRI:TSX ) is an alternative energy company focused on the development of large geothermal power projects in Western U.S.A. The company recently received funding from the US Department of Energy to further develop the strategic Blue Mountain geothermal project in Nevada. Blue Mountain has the potential to generate 100MW of energy to help meet the ever-growing demand for power in California and the Pacific Northwest. Because geothermal energy is a rapidly growing, clean alternative to coal, oil and gas-fired power plants, Continental Ridge represents an attractive investment opportunity in the energy sector. The Blue Mountain geothermal power project of Continental Ridge has many similarities

Geothermal Energy: A Natural Source of Clean Power
Geothermal energy (literally heat from the earth) has become the "green" energy alternative of choice because it is natural, clean, renewable, reliable, efficient and inexpensive to operate. The western U.S.A. has a generous endowment of geothermal potential. Nevada occupies the area of highest crustal heat flow in North America thanks to increased magmatic activity related to plate tectonics (see map below).

What is Geothermal Energy and How Can It Be Used?
Geothermal Energy The Earth's Temperatures Geothermal Resources Geothermal Resources in Canada ... Uses - Different Kinds of Geothermal Energy Systems
Geothermal Energy
Energy comes in many different forms. One form of energy is heat or "thermal" energy, which can be in the form of, for example, solar energy (from the sun); thermochemical energy (heat released from chemical reactions) and radiogenic energy (produced by radioactive decay). The Earth is a storehouse of energy that is produced internally by radiogenic heat production and long-term cooling of the planet. The surface of the Earth is also warmed by solar radiation. We refer to the Earth's energy as "Geothermal Energy". This energy is available to us for use in a variety of applications, including recreational use (hotsprings), direct use for heating, and power generation. Recent public interest in geothermal energy has however led to some confusion on the different forms of geothermal energy that are related to different types of geothermal resources. A complicating factor is that different people use different terms to describe essentially the same thing. Traditionally, geothermal energy was related to high temperature resources that are needed for power generation. However, the value of lower temperature resources for direct heating or recreational use has broadened the definition of geothermal energy.
The Earth's Temperatures
Of course, with our current drilling technology, we are limited to drilling relatively shallow boreholes. For example, water wells and mining boreholes may extend to several hundred metres below ground surface, while oil wells may be considerably deeper (a few thousand metres). The deepest borehole drilled on Earth was drilled in Russia, and it extends about 12 kilometres deep. Because we can only access heat energy from the very near surface of the Earth, it is to our advantage to seek out areas that have high geothermal gradients if we are interested in high temperature resources. Alternatively, if low temperature resources are sought, the relative stability of ground temperatures beyond a few metres depth allows us to access Earth energy at a fairly constant temperature year round.
