Geothermal Heating
Californian geothermal power plants (click for full size) The idea of geothermal energy is to use Earth's heat for electrical power and heating. Only a small distance below ground there are rocks and bodies of water heated to up to 100 degrees centigrade. With geothermal energy, hot ground water is used to drive power plants, as shown in the diagram below (from the United States Department of Energy). If there is no hot water in the ground, engineers can pump water in which gets heated by the Earth, and then pump it out again to use for heat. Geothermal energy does not pollute the Earth at all, but it still has several problems. One of these is that it only works in certain geographical areas because of the requirement of hot ground water or hot rocks. This rules it out as the primary energy source of the future. Building a geothermal plant it expensive because it requires drilling large holes into the Earth's crust. Geothermal energy also does not yield large amounts energy. California is a very good state for geothermal energy. On a

http://www.pge.com/microsite/PGE_dgz/more/alternative.html
Alternative Energy Sources
Alternative energy sources are resources that are constantly replaced and are usually less polluting. They are not the result of the burning of fossil fuels or splitting of atoms. The use of renewable energy is contributing to our energy supply. Some alternative energy sources are: biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind power, fuel cells, ocean thermal energy conversion, tidal energy, and wave energy. Biomass is renewable energy that is produced from organic matter. Biomass fuels include wood and forest and mill residues, animal waste, grains, agricultural crops, and aquatic plants. These materials are used as fuel to heat water for steam or processed into liquids and gases, which can be burned to do the same thing. With more use of biomass at lower production costs and better technology, the United States could generate as much as four-and-a-half times more biopower by 2020. It is estimated that biomass will have the largest increase among renewable energy sources, rising by 80 percent and reaching 65.7 billion kWh in 2020. Geothermal energy Hydroelectric (hydropower) energy employs the force of falling water to drive turbine-generators to produce electricity. Hydropower produces more electricity than any other alternative energy sources. It has been estimated that hydroelectric power will decline from 389 billion kWh in the U.S. in 1999 to 298 billion kWh in 2020. This decline is expected because most of the best sites for hydropower have already been developed and because of concerns about the adverse impact that large-scale hydroelectric facilities may have on the environment.

Geothermal Energy
How it works
There are three main ways of tapping geothermal energy:
  • Direct use Geothermal heat found near the surface of the Earth can be used directly for heating buildings (District Heating - the system that supplies communities with hot water or heating - being the most well known) and for a number of commercial and industrial uses. Geothermal heat pumps Electricity production There are three types of power plant that can convert geothermal energy to electricity, depending on the temperature of the geothermal fluid used. All three use a turbine that is driven by steam, which then drives a generator to produce electricity.
The past
Humans have used geothermal energy for thousands of years, using hot springs initially for cooking and building reservoirs around springs to create shrines and bathing complexes such as those built at Bath by the Romans. The dramatic rise in oil prices in the late 1970s prompted the Department of Energy in the UK to look for alternative energy sources. A number of deep geothermal aquifers were identified.

ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES
Finding and using environmentally friendlier energy and fuel sources has been a DoN focus for many years. By using alternative fuel vehicles, photovoltaic energy, and geothermal energy, DoN is promoting use of more natural, "greener," and cheaper power.
Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs)
DoN is a leader in the AFV effort. In March 1995, DoN operated 700 vehicles that run on clean-burning natural gas, with another 1,000 vehicles planned for conversion in 1995. DoN is working with local gas companies to provide the necessary "filling stations" and is making those stations available to the public. It costs about $5000 to convert a vehicle to use compressed natural gas (CNG), but that cost is expected to be recovered during the 7 year average service life of each vehicle in lower fuel costs. Natural gas vehicles (NGVs), in addition to reducing air pollution, have longer lasting engines, burn higher octane fuel for better performance, and reduce dependence on foreign petroleum. The savings in mobile emission reduction credit per vehicle provide another incentive for their use.

This year, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded nearly $5 million in grants to researchers in six western states to study methods of converting geothermal energy to electricity. The DOE initiative, dubbed "GeoPowering the West," is part of the department's ongoing effort to promote low-emission, alternative energy sources, say department sources. But this year's initiative, they maintain, goes even further: The DOE is now actively pushing Nevada, California, Texas, Utah, Idaho and North Dakota to generate 10 percent of their electricity with geothermal technology by the year 2020.
Nowhere is the raw power of geothermal resources more evident than in the Old Faithful geyser at Yellowstone National Park. "We're really looking at funding a broad spectrum of technology here," says Allan Jelacic, head of the DOE's geothermal research department.

Shell is looking into ways of developing wind power
By Andrew Craig Environmentalists have welcomed plans by the Shell oil company to invest vast sums in wind and solar energy over the next five years. It will put up to US$1bn into research and development - although that will still be far less than it spends on its oil and gas business. Shell is not going to stop being an oil giant in the foreseeable future, but its plans to invest in renewable energy show how many big oil producers see their future as all-purpose energy companies. Shell's alternatives Solar power Wind power Geothermal energy Biomass The fastest-growing alternative energy sectors are wind and solar power. Shell sees the future of wind energy as lying in big, offshore wind farms - both because the wind is stronger at sea, and because there are no people there to protest at the intrusion into their environment. It sees north-west Europe as an ideal region for this technology.

Alternative Energy Institute, Inc. The growth of geothermal energy is inhibited by its site-specific nature. Energy from the Earth… What could be more natural or plentiful? The source of geothermal power is the heat contained inside the Earth; heat so intense that it creates molten magma. There are a few different types of geothermal energy that can be tapped. "Some geothermal systems are formed when hot magma near the surface (1,500 to 10,000 meters deep) directly heats groundwater." The heat generated from these hot spots flows outward toward the surface, manifesting as volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs. Naturally-occurring hot water and steam can be tapped by energy conversion technology to generate electricity or to produce hot water for direct use. "Other geothermal systems are formed even when no magma is nearby as magma heats rocks which in turn heat deeply-circulating groundwater." ( ) In order to maximize the energy gleaned from these so-called "hot dry rocks," geothermal facilities will often fracture the hot rocks and pump water into and from them in order to use the heated water to generate electricity ( —Courtesy of Uranium Information Centre, Australia
