The settlement that sprang up around it soon became a missionary stronghold, but it wasn't until the 12th century that the seeds for Hamburg's development into a wealthy trading city were laid. This was accomplished largely by an ambitious nobleman, Count Adolf III, who in 1189, managed to wrangle a royal charter from Emperor Friedrich I (Barbarossa). It granted the fledgling city free trade rights and exemption from customs. A coup, to say the least, that turned Hamburg into an important port city and a leading member of the Hanseatic League. In the post-war years, Hamburg showed its usual resilience and recovered quickly. Today it is Germany's second-largest city after Berlin, with about 5% of its population being immigrants. Some 68,000 students study at nine institutions, and the largest is the University of Hamburg, with 42,000 students.

History Sportenthusiasts of Lockpicking - Germany
The sport club "Sportenthusiasts of Lockpicking - Germany" was offcialy established on 9 February 1997. It is currently a registered sporting association in Hamburg, Germany.
The club's foundation was the result of an evolution which took many years, driven by curiosity and the desire to know more. The driving force behind this was the present club President Steffen Wernéry, who already at age 12 was playing around with locks. He writes:
"My first pick, made from a little coat hanger, I had when I was 12. It was a great help, espicially when my teacher had misplaced the key to the classroom."
In August 1994 Wernéry was at the Hope Congress in New York City. During a break in the congress, he went into a "spy" shop where he bought a basic pick set. Coupled with some archive material which he found buried at the Chaos Computer Club (of which Wernéry was one of the founding members), the seeds were planted.
Along with Juergen Dreessman, Wernéry started to play with locks. Both would exchange information about locks, finding out how easy some were, how difficult some appeared to be ... and slowly, lockpicking became a passion.
At the 1996 Chaos Communication Congress Dreessmann and Wernéry gave their first public lockpicking workshop. It was a total success. Wernery wrote:

History And Philosophy - A Short Introduction
The estate of MAX FERD.RICHTER has been in the ownership of the family for more than 300 years. Today this enterprise is one of the leading producers of top RIESLING-wines in the heart of the central Mosel area with total holdings of 37 acres and an annual production of about 11,500 cases.
Vineyards:
MAX FERD.RICHTER not only produces fine RIESLING-wines which are well known throughout the world, such as "Wehlener Sonnenuhr", "Graacher Himmelreich" and "Brauneberger Juffer", but also two Monopoly top quality wines: "Mülheimer Helenenkloster" and "Veldenzer Elisenberg". The possession of these vineyards dates from 1813 when one of the ancestors, by his personal courage, succeeded in preventing the plundering of Mülheim by Emperor Napoleon I. MAX FERD.RICHTER supplies a large variety of single vineyard wines. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally fresh weathering grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay parts (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim); those make the character and flavour. More information about the history and the wines of the single vineyard sites can be found by following these links:

FROM THE HORSES MOUTH!! Monday, May 18, 1998
(revised September 24, 1998) Victor's Justice (Siegerjustiz) - Yes or No? JUST LISTEN TO WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SAY! It is my opinion that due to the Holocaust most Germans have an almost pathological need to see themselves in a positive light and thus are unable to objectively judge their former East German enemy upon whom they project their repressed guilt, and/or with the younger people, the general negative image of Germany's past onto. They do this by placing themselves into two groups. The "Good Germans" and the "Bad Germans". By severely punishing the "Bad communist Germans" (punishment already being a cultural trait of the Germans) they thus become the "Good innocent Germans simply thirsting for justice". It should be noted that the only political party that 100% categorically opposed Nazism in Germany was the communist party - the KPD. By prosecuting East German communists today the German anti-communists not only play down their historic decency in fighting Nazism (a fact to which most Germans had no claim to) but they also reiterate one of the major "justifications" for the German people's support of Hitler - Hitler's extreme hatred of the communists.
