    Collections
Collections include archaeology, ethnography and fine art. The archaeology section ranges from the Stone Age to the recent historical past. Most objects are from Ghana, however material such as glass beads from as early as the 15 th century that were used in the gold trade come from Europe. The ethnography department includes chiefly regalia, such as the large collection of carved wooden stools made and used throughout Ghana, state umbrellas and ceremonial swords. Among the collection of decorated metalwork are the brass ‘kuduo' masterpieces (containers made with the cire-perdue technique) from Akan. The Akan gold weights are particularly famous. Musical instruments include both Ghanian trumpets, horns and flutes, as well as drums, stringed instruments and percussion instruments. There are many examples of the traditional bark cloth textiles. Pottery from different areas of Ghana used for preparing and serving food, carrying and cooling water and bathing are on display. The collection also includes objects from other African countries, including Ivory Coast, South Africa, Nigeria and Congo.

The International Studies Department of Bentley College offers a new study abroad course, the first ever to take students to Africa: A class of 14 students will travel from New York to Accra, the capital of Ghana, on the weekend preceding spring break. A full program of site visits fills the week in Ghana. Dr. Marylee Crofts, who teaches African studies at Bentley, is the professor. Mawuena Dumor, an MBA student from Ghana, and Bonita McAllister, Director of the Multicultural Center, will accompany the group. The class meets 10 times before spring break and a couple of times afterward. Students focus on a particular topic within the program and write a paper on that subject. Course topics include the history of Ghana's international trade; Ghana's economic development policy, including the place of the private sector and the role of women in business; economic relations between the US and Ghana; and Ghana's place in the pan-Africanist movement. Lectures by Ghanaian professors and business leaders complement site visits to businesses and industry. An evening of traditional dance and music and a visit to the Akwapim traditional area add cultural interest to the class. Students also visit ancient forts and castles. Check out this opportunity to broaden your horizons and learn about a unique and beautiful country. The cost is $2400 and the deadline for applying is November 6th. Applications are available from Professor Crofts, Morison 139.

Because it is low-lying and so close to the equator, the temperature in Ghana is warm and hardly varies throughout the year, ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Rain falls almost exclusively during the rainy season between April and September, with a peak in May and June. The dusty Harmattan wind blows from the northeast between late November and March. The population of Ghana is estimated at 18,000,000. Most Ghanaians are either Christians or Muslim, though traditional African religious beliefs and practices also continue to flourish. The official language (used throughout the school system) is English, a legacy of colonization by the British. (The official language of all the bordering countries is French.) Some sixty languages are spoken in Ghana; Twi, the language of the Asante, is the largest of the Akan dialects and is spoken by nearly half of the people in the country. Accra, the capital, is on the coast and developed along with European trade and colonization. The Portuguese, Dutch, Danes, and British all had footholds along the coast from the 15
