Most have been brought in by Forest Protection authorities after being confiscated from hunters or animal traders. Others are brought by tourists or obtained after being illegally kept in private households or institutions. On the positive side, the Center's primate population has also expanded due to captive births from five species. The Center's numerous rare species listed below, including six which can only be found in captivity at EPRC*, make the rescue center an extraordinary and valuable institution not only for primatologists but all who are concerned about the survival of endangered wildlife. With no suitable National Park or protected area currently felt to be safe from hunters and traders, addressing this issue will require much innovation, perseverence and commitment. All the primates living at the Center have their own stories to tell. A couple of their stories are shared with you below.

1-800-659-SKULL Great apes are the largest members of the order Primates. The group is made up of the gorilla, chimpanzee, orangutan, gibbon and man. They are all tailless and depend greatly on eyesight to gather food and avoid predators. Primates, a mammalian order containing over 230 species, is made up of monkeys, apes, humans and other similar forms. All primates are omnivorous, although many who live in rain forests eat vegetation almost exclusively. Primate eyes face forward which allows for binocular vision. Most primates are arboreal and to some degree have an opposable thumb; monkeys also have prehensile tails which are used for grasping. Primates vary greatly in size from the mouse lemur that weighs as little as 2 ounces, to the gorilla which weighs more than 400 pounds. Primate skulls generally have large brain cases that approach globular form. The jaws are relatively short and the face is flattened. The eye orbits of a primate skull are encircled by bone and the orbits are directed forward. Download Great Apes in PDF Format more information on Adobe Acrobat

Asian Primates
In the greater Indochina region, primate types include lorises, langurs, macaques and gibbons. Little is known about the status of primates in this region, particularly in Cambodia. Years of violent conflict prevented scientific exploration of the country's extensive forest habitats. In 1997, the security situation improved, and scientists and conservationists began the urgent task of documenting and protecting the Kingdom's flaura and fauna.
Text and photos displayed here are from a gibbon conservation brochure produced by Save Cambodia's Wildlife. 10,000 copies have been produced and will be distributed across Cambodia. This project is part of of our broader gibbon conservation program which includes the children's book Will You Hear My Song , which will be off the press in August 2002.

In Eastern Cameroon, a central African country, gorillas are hunted and killed as a means of profit by unwealthy individuals whose only cercerns are how much of a profit each dead gorilla carcass and live young will bring in.
In these regions, gorilla meat is cosideered as more valuable than beef or pork. As a result, the natives are willing to pay a vast amount of money for their meat.
Each carcass is sold at $30 while the living newborn are sold at a higher value. Therefore, hunters search for mothers carrying any newborns.
Deforestation is also a threat to the Gorilla. After a forest is logged, the huntsmen follow as quickly as possible to eradicate the now homeless and vulnerable gorilla population.
Those who hunt the gorilla state that they do not enjoy seeking and destroying gorillas, but it is something that they have to do in order to insure that their family have adequate food suplies, as there are no other job vacancies in this region.

(Hylobates lar)
The Lar or white handed gibbon is one of the most attractive of the nine species of gibbon. Its whooping 'duels' can be heard far and wide in the rapidly disappearing forests of South East Asia.
Length: 45 - 64 cm.
Weight: 4 - 7 kg.
Sexual Maturity: 7 years.
Mating: Breeds every 2 - 3 yrs.
Gestation: 230 - 235 days.
Habit: Day active. Lives in a close-knit family group; territorial.
Diet: Mostly fleshy fruit; also buds, shoots and small animals.
Lifespan: 25 years in the wild. De Brazza Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) Ranges Cameroon to Ethiopia, Kenya to Angola. Habit: Semiterrestrial, living around swampy forests. Diet: Gestation: They usually have 1 infant after approx 185 days. Ring Tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) Found only on the island of Madagascar where their ancestors migrated to some 40 million years ago. lemurs are now threatened with extiction because of habitat destruction. Habit: Active by day. Lives in social groups. Diet: Mainly fruit and leaves. Sexual Maturity: 18 months but males do not usually breed until 3 years of age. Gestation: 136 days.

  • Natural History
    Geographic Range
Oriental : Tropical rainforests of southern and S.E. Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the area encompassing Southern China to Eastern Burma.
    Physical Characteristics
Mass: 4 to 6 kg. This species weighs 5.5 kg on average. Individuals are either dark brown to black in color, or red buff color with white face-rings, hands, and feet. Colors are not specific to sex. Males and females can show either color, but their white "accents" are always present. Natural History
    Food Habits
The lar gibbon is one of the pickiest eaters in the primate world. They are mainly frugivores, but they will also eat other plant matter. They consume ripe fruit only, and only new leaves and buds. They have several adaptations for feeding. One of them is brachiating locomotion, which involves swinging from branch to branch by their arms. This style of motion allows them to reach the periphery of the tree canopy, where most of their food is found. Other adaptations include high cusps on their back teeth to help grind plant matter, and a gut adapted for a folivorous diet.
    Reproduction
The gibbon has no fixed season for breeding. The gestation period lasts around seven months, and females produce approximately one young every two years. Although infants are weaned within a two year period, some young may stay with the group for a few additional years.

Hoolock Gibbon
Written by Matthew Krebs, University of California, Berkeley student Classification Table of Contents
  • Geographic Range
  • Physical Characteristics
  • Natural History
    Geographic Range
Oriental : Found in forested areas from eastern India and Bangladesh to Myanmar and southern China. Geographically, the Hoolock gibbon's natural range extends east to the Salween River and west to the Brahmaputra River. Of all gibbon species, their range extends the farthest north and east (Wolfheim, 1983).
    Physical Characteristics
Mass: 6 to 7 kg. The second largest of the gibbons following the siamang, the Hoolock gibbon is characterized by its longer hair, curved white brow streaks, and faint triangular shaped head. This species is dichromatic, adult males are completely black, while adult females are dark brown with black on the neck, chest, and facial areas. In some subpopulations males have more defined brow streaks than in others, a white preputial tuft, and may show white on their chin and cheeks. Some females have lightening on their hands and feet (Chivers and Gittins, 1978). Unique to all other gibbon species, the Hoolock gibbon has only 38 chromosomes, compared to 44 in other members of its subgenus (Nowak, 1999). Natural History
    Food Habits
Generally frugivorous, but the diet may be mixed with insects, leaves, and other vegetable matter. Usually ripe, pulpy fruit is preferred, so gibbons compete mainly with squirrels and birds, rather than other primates. Small vertebrates and eggs may be eaten occasionally. Generally, about 35 percent of the daily activity is spent feeding, and of that, up to 65 percent of the time is spent foraging for fruit (Chivers, 1977).

When reviewing the literature on gibbons, it is found that a variety of different names have been used for the Javan gibbon and, moreover, that some of these names have been applied also to other gibbon types. For these reasons, it is sometimes difficult to ascertain whether a certain statement actually refers to the Javan gibbon or not. In the following, an attempt to clarify the situation is made by (1) presenting the reasons for this confusing situation, and (2) giving a list of the different names in the synonymy of the Javan gibbon.
1. Nomenclature Although grey coloured gibbons had already been briefly mentioned by LECOMPTE [1698], SCHREBER [1775], CAMPER [1782] and PENNANT [1793], efforts to define the taxonomic position of the grey gibbon type did not take place until the very end of the 18th century when three separate names were given to it almost simultaneously: Simia moloch Simia cinerea by CUVIER in 1798 (description only)

Hi Med Low ... Low
On April 21, 2001 Nashville Zoo opened Gibbon Islands to the public, officially introducing apes to the park. The new exhibit hosts two different species of apes; siamang gibbons and white-handed gibbons. Considered the crown jewel of the Zoo's Entry Village, Gibbon Islands are two beautifully landscaped hills complete with trees (some as high as 60 feet), shrubs, grass and boulders. The two islands are actually two buildings buried with tons of soil and rock and surrounded by a 4-foot deep moat giving guests an unobstructed view of the primates. Like most primate species, gibbons will not enter the water so the moat will keep the apes in their exhibit. Gibbons comprise a family of primates commonly called "Lesser Apes". These active primates live almost exclusively in trees and rarely descend to the ground. With their arms primarily used for travel, gibbons use their feet to carry food and other objects.
