They brachiate (travel arm over arm swinging from the branches) and do not jump from branch to branch, as do smaller primates. They form nuclear families, with the parents mated for life and the young raised by both parents. Gibbons are omnivorous, eating foods found in the forest canopy: leaves, fruit, seeds, insects, eggs, birds, etc. But the doctor and the Captain also had to content with another ape on the Lively, at least part of one.

This ape is the smallest of the lesser apes which also includes chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The gibbon is rather a unique primate. The white-cheeked gibbon belongs to the kingdom Animalia .(1) To be in the kingdom Animalia you must be multicellular, to be multicellular you must have more than one cell. The amoeba is an example of unicellular organism. To be unicellular, you only have one cell. Also to be in the kingdom Animalia, the animal must be heterotrophic. To be heterotrophic you cannot make your own food.(2) Plants on the other hand, make their own food by photosynthesis so they are called autotrophic(2). Gibbons are slender animals with small, round heads; soft, woolly fur; and very long arms. They are the only anthropoid apes to walk on the hind limbs only. Gibbons are monogamous; the young, born singly, remain with the family group until they are five or six years old. The animals are omnivores. About nine species of gibbons exist, including the silvery gibbon (pictured), the white-handed gibbon, and the siamang which is the largest gibbon. Gibbon populations have been severely reduced due to hunting and deforestation. Howler Monkey Certain monkeys found in Central and South America, known for their characteristic roar. The howler is the largest and heaviest of American monkeys. The black face is bearded with long black hair.
