Research Opportunities
The National Science Foundation supports basic research on the Human Dimensions of Global Change (HDGC). HDGC research focuses on the interactions between human and natural systems, with an emphasis on the social and behavioral processes that shape and influence those interactions. Proposals for general research on HDGC must be clearly related to social, psychological, economic, demographic, anthropological, geographic, governmental, legal, institutional, and/or ethical aspects of global change including the development of statistical methodology and mathematics models. Although the emphasis is on global change, proposals for research on regional or local phenomena are welcome provided the implications for global effects are clearly specified in the proposal. Proposals should be well grounded in relevant social science theory, they should explain how the research will contribute to the enhancement of that theory, and they should clearly outline and justify the research methods to be used. Proposals to build or synthesize databases should include detailed research plans for use of the data. Back to top

RESEARCH REPORTS ... SEARCH The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary, involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. The CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), are the parent organizations of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction
The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine:
  • Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation

The MIT was founded in 1991 as an interdisciplinary organization that conducts research, independent policy analysis, and public communication on issues of global environmental change. It is not a degree-granting entity.
The Joint Program combines the capabilities of two pre-existing MIT research centers: the CENTER FOR GLOBAL CHANGE SCIENCE and the . It brings together an interactive group of faculty, staff and student researchers. Resources of the parent centers are strengthened by links to the MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY'S ECOSYSTEMS CENTER in Woods Hole, Mass., to the MIT CLIMATE MODELING INITIATIVE , and other MIT environmental programs.
The Program's work is focused on the integration of natural and social science aspects of the climate issue, to produce analyses relevant to ongoing national and international discussions. Cooperative efforts enage the Program with leading research institutions and non-profit organizations worldwide. Financial support is provided by and international group of sponsors from government organizations, foundations, and industry.

Welcome to GCTE Focus 1! Our objective is to understand and model the effects of global change on ecosystem processes such as the exchange of carbon and water with the atmosphere, nutrient cycling and storage, and carbon sources and sinks. A central thesis of Focus 1 is that the ways in which ecosystems function - their physiology - will be strongly affected by the combined and interactive suite of human influences on the earth system, such as rising CO concentrations, climate change, and land use change.
