The Smithsonian Institution is more than a museum, and more than a series of programs for school children or visitors to enjoy. A great deal of research is done within the museums and centers that comprise the Institution.
The Smithsonian Institution is a member of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, a coalition of government agencies that are trying to bring together all the data, information, and research they are doing on our changing global environment.
We have collected here a listing of the research on global change that Smithsonian scientists have done. The four categories above are the research areas that the USGCRP has proposed as themes; the buttons on the left are the Smithsonian units that are doing research we categorize as related to global change.
We have also included an essay, " What do we mean by global change ?"

With the advent of total solar irradiance satellite measurements since 1978, it is now documented that the amount of energy from the Sun varies over decadal time scales. The Sun supplies the energy for the Earth's system heat budget. The major components that affect this heat budget are a.) changes in the Earth's orbit, b.) internal processes (such as cloudiness, ice cover, anthropogenic effects, etc.), and c.) variations in solar activity. Because the Earth's climate is changing, it is critical to understand the contributions of each component and take action when necessary to curb possible negative effects we might have control over. A good example of this kind of action is the worldwide effort to reduce the amount of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) emitted by man. Climate variability is a major issue and our understanding is still uncertain. Click on the images below to see full-sized diagrams: a.) Changes in the Earth's Orbit:

Health care, unemployment. Ozone depletion. These are the headings we see every-day in the Global Change Game, participants have the opportunity to find solutions to these and other pressing world issues. Played on a colourful hand-painted world map the size of a basketball court, the Global change game is a fast-paced, challenging learning activity which channels participant's energy and creativity into exploring the major global problems of our time. The Global Change Game was created in Winnipeg in December 1991 by a small group of volunteer students from the University of Manitoba. Since that time, the game has travelled from one end of the country to the other. The game has been played in high schools, Universities, conferences and even the Manitoba Legislature. Collingwood Collegiate Institute was pleased to present the Global Change Game. The game was an ultimate success helping people to understand the balance between economics and trade and trying to save the environment. Participants left with a more personal outlook of global problems and ways to resolve them on earth. The session provided sound ideas of sustainable development, which is and will become a strong focus for today and years to come! Research Center Privacy Statement T he Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is dedicated to increasing knowledge of the biological and physical processes that sustain life on earth. SERC's interdisciplinary research applies long-term studies to examine the ecological questions about landscapes of linked ecosystems, especially those impacted by human activities. SERC scientists use an experimental approach to discover mechanisms regulating the structure and dynamics of the environment.
L ocated on the shore of Chesapeake Bay, SERC uses the geographic features of the nation's largest estuary to investigate interconnections of aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric components of complex landscapes. These studies are then compared on regional, continental and global scales. SERC develops innovative approaches and instrumentation to measure environmental change in four ecological levels: global change; landscape ecology; ecology of coastal ecosystems; and population and community ecology.
F or improved stewardship of the biosphere, SERC's research provides data, publications and expert consultation in support of conservation, environmental policy and management of natural resources. Connected to an international network of collaborators, SERC trains future generations of scientists to address ecological questions of the nation and globe. SERC's education programs in ecology demonstrate to the public the active process of research, and infuse scientific approaches for environmental issues through experiencing nature.

Remote sensing has traditionally been the province of Earth scientists and the national security community. Until recently, applications relevant to social science research questions were, by and large, not even considered. However, since the late 1980s social scientists have begun to apply remote sensing imagery to understand the underlying social processes behind diverse phenomena such as deforestation, desertification, and urbanization. Many applications have also been developed in the fields of archaeology, demography, and human health and epidemiology. A team of CIESIN staff describe the advantages and constraints of remote sensing applications and summarize major findings in this exciting new frontier of social science research. The Guide includes a bibliography of more than 600 citations.

    AGRICULTURE
    AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN Thematic Guide on Agriculture and Global Environmental Change. The purpose of this guide is to help you locate key documents and data sets that pertain to human dimensions of global environmental change related to agriculture. Although the aim is to provide the most relevant sources and data, this guide offers only an overview of available information. Agriculture is as ancient as human civilization itself and is the fundamental activity through which humans survive on earth. Especially in developing countries, agriculture is the primary contributor to the nation's economy. Agricultural practices, however, may contribute to global climate change: Arable farming, burning and clearing of forests, wetland rice cultivation, raising of livestock, and use of nitrogenous fertilizer can lead to increased concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. Conversely, global climate change could affect agriculture by reducing the amount of land available for cultivation, decreasing crop yields, and threatening food security, especially in the developing countries. Therefore, systematically documenting and disseminating information related to the impact of agricultural activities on the global climateand vice versaare important tasks. Identifying appropriate technological and policy interventions to mitigate global climate change is crucial at the national, regional, and local levels. Considering indigenous environmental knowledge, including human adaptive strategies, is necessary to strengthen technological and policy initiatives.

This project is designed to support the participating Caribbean countries in preparing to cope with the adverse effects of global climate change, particularly sea level rise in coastal and marine areas through: vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and capacity building linked to adaptation planning. It is being executed through the cooperative effort of twelve CARICOM countries and participating institutions over a period of four years by a combination of national pilot/demonstration components and regional components. The project is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through The World Bank as implementing agency and is executed by the Organization of American States (OAS). The project is coordinated in the Caribbean through the Regional Project Implementation Unit (RPIU), which was established by the UWI Centre for Environment and Development (UWICED)
