Sizzling year. Torrid decade. Blistering future?
5 FEB 1999 When the global warming debate first heated up in the late 1980s, scientists warned that the Earth our grandkids walked might be cooking like a fried egg on an El Paso sidewalk. The prediction ran like this: Gathering levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere would trap heat, causing a rapid warming and damaging the atmosphere, the oceans and the economy. Measurements at weather stations around the globe show these global average temperatures in degrees Celsius, relative to the 1951-1980 average (about 14°C). Recent data is better than older data Goddard Institute for Space Studies And our grandchildren could face drought, fire and flood essentially a list of biblical catastrophes. These days, after 18 straight months of record temperatures, the concern is not about the next generation. It's about next year . And 18 record-setting months are only one of the warning signs.
1998 saw the 20th straight year of above-normal surface temperatures, 0.4 degrees F hotter than 1995, the previous record. In 1998, the hottest year since scientists began keeping track of such things in the mid-1800s, global temperatures were 1.04 degrees F above the average for 1961-1990.

Costa Rica schoolgirls plant a sapling as part of the celebration of Earth Day in 1998 (Kent Gilbert/AP) First observed internationally on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has evolved into a major worldwide event for environmentalists young and old, who use their brief moment in the spotlight to warn against dangers that threaten the health of the Earth and its habitants. It's also a great vehicle, activists have found, to get people involved in curbing those ills. The media bears a responsibility to collect and share these stories: TIME cover pieces on topics ranging from toxic waste to global warming have shed light on both the looming threats of pollution and the small victories of the environmental movement. In 1988, the magazine named "Endangered Earth" its Planet of the Year, in lieu of Man of the Year; the issue remains one of the most memorable in the magazine's history.

Global Warming
United Nations Panel Sees Worsening Global Warming Trend On January 22, 2001 an international group of hundreds of scientists issued a report predicting that Earth's average temperature will rise as much as 10.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the next 100 years. The report was issued by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was meeting in Shanghai, China. The panel declared that human beings are responsible for the changing global climate. The group predicted that world temperatures will rise 2.5 to 10.4 degrees Fahrenheit between 1990 and 2100, causing sea levels to rise by 3.5 to 34.6 inches and possibly causing catastrophic flooding in high-population, low lying areas such as China, Bangladesh, and Egypt. The change could also induce crop failure, famine, and a spread of diseases such as malaria, according to the group. The report's conclusions are much stronger than those issued as recently as 1995, when the panel saw only a "discernable human influence" on the world's climate and predicted that temperatures would rise 1.8 to 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The change was attributed, ironically, to successful efforts to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide. A component of smog, atmospheric sulfur dioxide also deflects the sun's rays and reduces global warming. The Earth's temperature has already warmed by over 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years, with land temperatures rising more than those over the world's oceans, which have a moderating effect.

Abrupt Climate Change: Not on the Human-Induced Agenda
: Climate alarmists put forth a lot of unrealistic scenarios to frighten people into doing what they want them to do. The idea that global warming may cause catastrophically abrupt climate change is but another example that flies in the face of both reason and data. Subject Index Summaries
Non-Vascular Plants
: A review of the recent literature suggests that non-vascular plants in bog communities may show varied responses to future increases in the air's CO concentration that range from no response to highly significant increases in biomass production.

Abrupt Climate Change:
Not on the Human-Induced Agenda
Volume 6, Number 14: 2 April 2003
Large, abrupt, and widespread climate changes with major impacts have occurred repeatedly in the past, when the Earth system was forced across thresholds. Thus begins the abstract of a major new review of the subject of rapid climate change (Alley et al ., 2003), which was written by the authors of an earlier National Research Council (NRC) report dealing with the same topic (Alley et al The new review article and the NRC report that inspired it contain both reasonable and illogical proposals. On the sensible side of the ledger is Alley et al .'s (2003) suggestion that policy-makers should consider "improving monitoring systems, and taking actions designed to enhance the adaptability and resilience of ecosystems and economies." Since no one can accurately predict the future trajectory of world climate and many cannot even agree what has happened in the past, most notably with respect to the temperature history of the planet it should be clear that reliable meteorological monitoring systems are definitely needed. And since we cannot yet actually do anything about either weather or climate

http://solar-center.stanford.edu/sun-on-earth/glob-warm.html
Global Warming
Does it Exist?
If so, is it Man- or Sun-made?
Graph of solar activity versus climate
From Friis-Christensen, E., and K. Lassen, "Length of the solar cycle: An indicator of solar activity closely associated with climate," Science, 254, 698-700, 1991. Global warming the gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures seems to be accepted by many scientists and people now as fact. Generally, this warming is attributed to the increase of green-house gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere. However, some solar scientists are considering whether the warming exists at all. And, if it does, might it be caused, wholely or in part, by a periodic but small increase in the Sun's energy output. An increase of just 0.2% in the solar output could have the same affect as doubling the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.
What is the Problem?
What is the evidence for global warming? Certainly, there are considerably more green-house gases (e.g. carbon dioxide) in our atmosphere than in previous times. And there appears to be some evidence that global temperatures are rising. But, how accurate and correct are our global warming statistics? And, do we really know what role, if any, the Sun might play in any global warming patterns? These issues are currently being debated, and may significantly affect you for the rest of your life. Would you like to do some research to find out more about global warming?
