Saturday, 27 January, 2001, 16:50 GMT Gorillas do well despite war
Gorilla numbers have risen by more than 10% in a decade in Virunga
By environment correspondent Alex Kirby Despite the trauma and disturbance of a savage war, Africa's mountain gorillas are slowly improving their prospects of survival. Conservationists say one gorilla population, which contains more than half the world total for the species, has increased its numbers in the last decade. Monitoring shows the Virunga gorillas, on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have increased by at least 11% since 1989. There are estimated to be fewer than 650 mountain gorillas left in the wild. The species is highly endangered, not just because of the years of fighting in the area, but also because of heavy pressure on the forests where the gorillas live. But with the Virunga gorillas now numbering 355 animals, up from 320 in 1989, conservation groups are cautiously encouraged. Hope despite conflict And they believe that even that figure is likely to prove an underestimate.

Children were unaware they were eating endangered species
From Francis Ngwa Niba in Yaounde A British wildlife charity in Cameroon has set up an educational programme aimed at encouraging schoolchildren to stop eating the meat of endangered species.
These primates are friends and eating them is like eating a friend
Biology teacher The charity - Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund - began work at Yaounde Mvogbetsi Zoo four years ago as an initiative to look after primates orphaned as a result of the bushmeat trade. Thousands of children have benefited so far amid signs that the programme is becoming a huge success. I followed a group of 20 students from the Promethe Evening School on a typical trip to the zoo. "We make them understand that these primates are friends and eating them is like eating a friend," says biology teacher Banseka Eriw, who organised the visit. Before setting off students are questioned about their views on the bushmeat trade.

Gorillas are large, quiet, gentle apes that live in Africa. Although gorillas are frequently portrayed as aggressive, dangerous killers, they are really shy, peaceful vegetarians. Because of massive loss of habitat, these majestic primates are in great danger of going extinct.
ANATOMY
Gorillas have very long arms (the arms are longer than the legs), and a short, bulky body with a wide chest. Hair and Skin
Gorillas are covered with brownish hair on most of their body (except their fingers, palms, armpits, and bottoms of their feet). The Head
Gorillas have a very large head with a bulging forehead, a crest on top (which is larger on male gorillas), tiny ears, and small, dark-brown eyes. Gorillas have no tail. Adult gorillas have 32 teeth, with large molars (flat teeth used for chewing food) and large canines (pointy teeth used for biting), which are especially large in the male gorillas. Gorillas each have a unique nose print (like we have unique fingerprints). Senses
Gorillas have senses very similar to ours, including hearing, sight (they seem to be slightly nearsighted and to have color vision), smell, taste, and touch.

Definition -

How do they do this? Orangutans’ untidy hair helps them blend in, and they can sit still for hours at a time. Lack of movement helps conceal their location. 2. Why do orangutans move better in trees than on the ground? Orangutans’ feet have long curved toes for holding branches and moving from tree to tree. When they are on the ground, they walk on the edges of their feet and not flat on the ground, which makes walking clumsy. They also don’t have thick skin on the backs of their hands like gorillas and chimps to help them walk on their knuckles. 3. What types of food do orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees eat?

Primate Facts
There are more than 180 species of primates, from the 140g pygmy marmoset, to the 200kg gorilla. There are four great apes: the orangutan, the gorilla, the chimpanzee and the bonobo or pigmy chimpanzee. Apes are bigger than monkeys, but do not have tails. Eastern gorilla Distribution Chimpanzee Gorilla Chimpanzees are found in 21 countries of central and western Africa, while the five sub-species of gorilla are found in only nine countries of eastern and central Africa. Distributions have reduced and populations declined as apes and their habitats have been over exploited and destroyed. Habitat Chimpanzees live in forests and savannah grasslands, gorillas generally in tropical forests. The main priority for location is a good food supply. Gorilla habitat includes sea level forests in central Africa and up to 4,000m mountains in the east. Diet Gorillas are entirely vegetarian, eating plants and fruits. Chimps eat mainly vegetarian food... plants, seeds, fruits, young leaves, buds, nuts, shoots and bark, but also termites, ants, insect larva, honey and even fish. Chimps forage in groups and hunt co-operatively for monkeys and young antelope.

THE ORIGIN OF CHIMPANZEES, GORILLAS AND ORANGUTANS ;The Origin of the Primates Y-Chromosomes Date of publication on Internet : July 26 , 2000 www.mamomumy.com Dated by BELGIAN Authorities 30 th of June, 2000 Studying the varieties between elephants or rhinos is easy. Of each genera we find one or two species in Africa and one or two in Asia. But monkeys, what a confusing situation .All kind of colours, sizes, shapes, weights and intelligences; not to mention their looks. Nowadays they are mainly spread over the worlds tropical regions, for the time being. In this article a new ANALYTICAL METHOD is proposed to classify apes and monkeys according their genetic distances from humans; most particularly the distances in MITOCHONDRIAL DNA (mtDNA) . The highly diversified monkey Y-chromosomes play a dominant role in this new method. Mitochondrial DNA is uniparentally inherited as we all know and is passed on from mother to son and daughter. As we shall see, also the MITOCHONDRIAL PATERNAL INHERITANCE plays a surprising role with monkeys and is passed on to every NEW GENE- RATION by means of the MALE SPERM CELL.
