Extant Primates
Ralph E. Taggart, Professor Department of Plant Biology Department of Geological Sciences Michigan State University Evolution of the Order Primates can be traced back to the early Tertiary period and the order is considered to have developed as an offshoot of a group of small, nocturnal, insectivorous mammals known as tree shrews . Several sub-orders are recognized:
Prosimians
Prosimians represent the least derived group of primates and include lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers. All of these animals are nocturnal and all species are endangered as a result of loss of tropical rain-forest habitat. A lemur ( Propithecus verrauxi ), endemic to the island of Madagascar off the east coast of Africa. Lemurs feature a somewhat elongated snout with minimal overlap of the visual field of its two eyes. Given the general trends in primate evolution, these are considered "primitive" characters. A loris ( Loris tardigradis ) from India. The snout is somewhat elongated (less so than in lorises) and the eyes are rotated toward the front of the face, providing stereoscopic vision. The rain-forests of southeast Asia provide the habitat for many tarsiers, including this one (

Lately, Gorilla Haven is being used as a resource for information about gorillas:
Animal Ways: Gorillas The Gorilla, Gorillas and their Babies (A Zoo Life Book), Gorillas (A True Book) , by Patricia A. Fink Martin, published 2000, ISBN: 0-516-21570-1. Published by Children's Press, a Division of Grolier Publishing, New York. About $20. Animal Underworld by Alan Green, published 1999, ISBN: 1-891620-28-2 mentions Gorilla Haven, although we never spoke to the author and were surprised to see our names in the index! This book exposes what happens to many zoo animals, when they are no longer able to be displayed. It's rather disturbing, but an important fact of life that many choose or want to ignore.

What are primates?
The Courier-Journal There are more than 180 species of primates, which are further classified into two suborders:
  • The Prosimii (or prosimians, ''pre-monkeys'') include the lemurs, lorises and tarsiers.
  • The Anthropoidea are the Old World monkeys, including baboons and macaques; New World monkeys, such as marmosets and capuchin-like monkeys; the lesser apes, including gibbons; the great apes chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans; and humans. The first primates evolved about 65 million years ago, just as the dinosaurs were on their way out. Characteristics include limber shoulder joints and dexterous, clasping fingers and toes with five digits that allow movement from branch to branch. Also, fingers and toes with nails instead of claws; excellent hand-eye coordination; large, complex brains; and single births with long periods of careful maternal care. The population totals roughly 40,000. Eastern lowland gorilla: Found in Eastern Zaire and areas near the Rwanda boarder. Roughly 4,000 found in isolated rainforest regions. Mountain gorilla: Inhabits Zaire, Rwanda, and Uganda. In 1992, approximately 320 were living in these regions and around 300 were living in forest regions of Uganda. The gorilla can be seen in the following National Parks and Reserves: Parks and Reserves throughout Rwanda and Zaire, especially Parc de Volcans, Kahusi-Biega, and Virunga NP. [an error occurred while processing this directive] Ecology The gorilla lives in humid rainforests along the equator. Gorillas eat plants that grow only in areas that receive intense sunlight exposure. Mountain gorillas live in forests between 9200 and 11,200 ft (2800-3499 m) and occasionally are found in meadows at around 13,000 ft (4000 m). Eastern lowland gorillas can also be found in the mountains between 6600 and 8000 ft (2000-2500 m).

In most of Africa the demand is growing for the meat of forest animals-this is known as "bushmeat". The "bushmeat" most in demand is that from Gorillas, Elephants and Chimpanzees. Thousands of hunters earn their living from slaughtering these animals. Some of the "notable" casualties have been the Gorillas Mushauuka, who was featured in the movie "Gorillas in The Mist" and Manheshe, who was featured on the Zaire 50E000 currency note. The Eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla graueri) is found only in eastern Congo. In 1998, before the most recent wave of killings, there were fewer than 17 000 of them left alive. The loss in elephant numbers has been even more dramatic in the Kahuzi-Biega park, with a total population of 320 in 1996 reduced to fewer than 20, and possibly as little as five. Mass slaughtering of Gorillas are occurring in the Congo where a bloody civil war is taking place. The combatants on both sides are killing Gorillas for food.

Primates in peril, except for one species
    August 28, 1997
Web posted at: 7:21 p.m. EDT (2321 GMT) WASHINGTON (AP) Hunting and the steady loss of forests have made primates the most imperiled group of mammals on the planet. Only one species of primates is increasing in numbers: humans. Nearly half of the 235 primates, including chimpanzees the human's closest evolutionary relative are threatened with extinction. Another 20 percent are approaching that status, said a report published Thursday by Worldwatch Institute. "In general, the reasons for the declines are no mystery: they all relate, directly or indirectly, to human actions," said the report entitled "Death in the Family Tree." It spotlighted a number of "hotspots" around the world where forest loss has resulted in high concentrations of endangered primates. These include southeast Asia, equatorial Africa, Madagascar, and southeastern Brazil. "The fate of these forests will largely determine the fate of most primates, and more and more of these forests are losing their ecological integrity as they are logged, colonized and cleared for agriculture," the article said. In south and east Asia, nine-tenths of all primates are facing extinction. In Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans the ape most dependent on trees have lost 80 percent of their forests in the past two decades.

Web posted at: 11:30 a.m. EST PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) Twenty-three gorillas, orangutans and other primates died in an early morning fire at the Philadelphia Zoo's primate house Sunday. Among the dead primates were six western lowland gorillas, three Bornean orangutans, four white-handed gibbons (one of which was a rare albino gibbon) and 10 lemurs. All are endangered species. The animals probably died of smoke inhalation and were not burned, said fire Commissioner Harold Hairston. The small fire was confined to a 30-foot-by-30-foot section of a ceiling in the zoo's World of Primates building. "It appears they died in their sleep," Hairston said. Zoo spokeswoman Antoinette Marciolek called it "devastating." ( 179K AIFF sound or 179K WAV sound A one-story brick building housed the World of Primates exhibit. It had smoke detectors but no automatic sprinklers. A security guard first reported the fire at 12:45 a.m. and it was brought under control within 20 minutes. The cause is under investigation. The zoo's president, Pete Hoskins, said the fire is the worst tragedy in the history of the nation's first zoo, which was founded in 1859.

Harry is a fully-grown adult gorilla. Adult males are known as a silverback because of the silvery grey hair on their back. This shows that he is the dominant male. Lena is much smaller than Harry and generally females are only half the size of the males. Gorillas used to be thought of as very aggressive, dangerous animals and films like King Kong did nothing to improve their reputation. However gorillas have been studied and proved to be very gentle and calm. However if he feels threatened a male will stand up and slap his chest with cupped hands whilst roaring. This is just a display intended to frighten away any threat. If this does not work, he will make a bluff charge, rushing towards the intruder but either stopping short or rushing past. Gorillas spend their days at quite a leisurely pace, eating, resting and playing. Gorillas walk on all fours keeping their feet flat and their hands in a fist with all the weight resting on the knuckles. Just before it gets dark gorillas make themselves a night nest on the ground by bending over leafy branches to form a comfortable springy platform. About Dublin Zoo How Can You Help
