Leveled Readers
Leveled readers are the key component in a guided reading program. Reading A-Z leveled readers are not selected from a collection of books and then leveled. Lesson Plans
Each book is accompanied by a multiple-page lesson plan. The lessons include strategies for introducing the book and building background, strategies to use while students read, strategies and questions for after-reading discussions, and a bank of ideas for teaching a variety of skills, including phonological awareness, phonics, high-utility words, word structure, grammar, and mechanics. Lessons also include extension activities that link to writing and other curriculum areas, such as math, science, and social studies.

  • 3-8 Attaching Stories to Morals 1. Read the Tortoise and the Hare Continued and talk about what a moral is and how the morals change as the story changes. 2. Tell a real story from your own life to your students and ask them to give it a moral. Example: One day I lost my homework and when I got to school I found the teacher forgot to collect it. Moral: Trouble rarely comes when you suspect it. 3. Collect some proverbs or Morals from Aesop fables or take some to the proverbs beneath. Choose one and with the class write a story to go along with it.

    • A couple of 22 x 36" flipchart newsprint pads; or a photocopier and a ream of paper
    • 8 x 11" paper for all students

    Two to three weeks, allowing time for students to draft, research, edit and present their work. Teaching Procedure
  • List the characteristics of a convincing political speech. Have students list 10 characteristics of a convincing political speech. Appoint a secretary to write the list on the board. This list will be part of your scoring guide for assessing convincing political speeches. The characteristics should be achievable and agreed upon by a substantial student majority as well as clearly understood by everyone (not vaguely defined). Characteristics may range from those found in See It My Way: How to Write a Speech to such items as keeping audience interest, touching on issues vital to the audience and providing a 30-second sound-bite for television and radio.
