    http://www.ctcfl.ox.ac.uk/sample/grammarlist.htm
    Back
    Stative verbs [
A stative verb expresses quality or conditions, so in Chinese one simply uses one ¡®verb¡¯, this stative verb, where in English one would use the verb to be with an adjective. For instance, in ËûºÜ¦ [he is very busy] ¦ is a stative verb and means to be busy. º [to be good] or [to be well] is here used as a stative verb, as in: Äã µÄ ³µ º Âð [is your bike / car good?] ÊÇ [to be] is not needed here.
The statement Ëû ºÜ º can mean either [his health is very good] or [he is very good]. The true meaning of this sentence depends on the context.
In colloquial Chinese the affirmative form of ¦ is often preceded by ºÜ. ÎÒ ½ñ Ìì ºÜ ¦ [I am [very] busy today]. ÎÒ ½ñ Ìì ¦ sounds incomplete, or like the answer to a question.
If ÎÒ ¦ is followed by another phrase, ºÜ can be omitted. ÎÒ ½ñ Ìì ¦ ÷ Ìì ²» ¦ [I am busy today, but not tomorrow].
When a monosyllabic stative verb such as ¦ is used in a question: Äã ¦ Âð? [are you busy?] ºÜ can be omitted. The answer to this question is ÎÒ ¦ [I am busy].
    Possessive µÄ [
This construction indicates that the noun after µÄ belongs to the noun that comes before µÄ, as inС Íõ µÄ ÓÊ Æ± [Xiao Wang¡¯s stamp].

"Used to" in English fulfills the function that, in many languages, is covered by a whole tense! We use "used to" to express something which happened regularly in the past but doesn't happen anymore. A past routine, a past habit. I used to drink three whiskeys a day ten years ago, but then I stopped. She used to be a teacher, but now works as a lawyer. Questions The question form uses "use to": Did you use to live in this house, Tony?

In English, there is the definite article "the" and the indefinite articles "a" and "an" The difference between "a" and "an" is simple. We put "an" in front of words with vowels. Examples: He lives in an old house. She always wears an orange hat. Careful - we use "an" also in front of words that begin with a silent "h" such as an hour and in front of abbreviations that start with a vowel sound such as an M.P. (which starts with an /em/ sound).
