"Quote"?
by
Charlotte White Recently, I had dinner with a distinctly Anglophobic friend of mine. "What do they have against the letter ‘Z’, anyway?" she quipped, removing an unsightly bit of parsley from a bicuspid. "You know, ‘criticise’ with an ‘s’, ‘hypnotise’ with an ‘s’, ‘categorise’, ‘theorise’, and all that." For dramatic effect, she slowly hissed each sibilant to make sure that I got the point. "And what’s with the word ‘Zed’?" I calmly toyed with my linguini, waiting for her outburst to finish. "Then there’s that ‘no period’ after appellations stuff! Where is that coming from? You tell me…"

A. KINDS OF SENTENCES
There are three kinds of sentences:
1. SIMPLE
A simple sentence consists of one main (or independent) clause . (A clause is defined as a group of words containing both a subject and a verb. An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence.) Therefore, to be complete, a simple sentence must have at least one subject and one verb , and may have a compound subject and/or a compound verb.
The man went to the store.
The man and his son went to the store and bought some milk.

Fundamentals of English Grammar: Description and Use is a complete introduction to the basic syntactic structure of Modern English and the most common prescriptive errors in formal writing and how to avoid them. Approximately the first half of the book is devoted to syntactic structure. The remainder of the book is devoted to prescriptive errors and how to avoid them. Students will usually find the first half of the book more difficult than the second half. However, it is impossible to understand some of the more complex prescriptive errors, such as misplaced and dangling modifiers, without an understanding of basic syntactic structure.

A Statement on Plagiarism
Using someone else's ideas or phrasing and representing those ideas or phrasing as our own, either on purpose or through carelessness, is a serious offense known as plagiarism. Let us suppose, for example, that we're doing a paper for Music Appreciation on the child prodigy years of the composer and pianist Franz Liszt and that we've read about the development of the young artist in several sources. In Alan Walker's book Franz Liszt: The Virtuoso Years However, if we report on the boy's father's role in the prodigy's development, we should give proper credit to Alan Walker. We could write, for instance, the following: Franz Liszt's father encouraged him, as early as age six, to practice skills which later served him as an internationally recognized prodigy (Walker 59). Or, we could write something like this: Alan Walker notes that, under the tutelage of his father, Franz Liszt began work in earnest on his piano playing at the age of six (59). Not to give Walker credit for this important information is plagiarism.

When the link brings you to this page it means that there are some basic mistakes in your sentence structure. This could be a structure that is different in your own language without you being aware of it. Try and correct your mistake, and show it to me in class if you are not sure of the answer. Harri wrote,"Nowadays euthanasia isn't allowed in many countries, but by and by new countries have been let it."
Harri confused active and passive structures, and the meaning wasn't clear to me. He may have meant, "Nowadays euthanasia isn't allowed in many countries, but by and by new countries will allow it",
or perhaps "Nowadays euthanasia isn't allo wed in many countries, but gradually new countries are allowing it. Saara wrote: Especially I like those pieces of music ....... It would be better to say, "I especially like those pieces of music.... " "Especially" is a word that does not usually come at the beginning of a sentence in English. It often comes in a clause at the end of a sentence, e.g. I like Sibelius' music, especially his Finlandia Symphony.

There was a lot of material covered in Lessons One to Four, so this review is just to help clarify things and get some practice using the grammar and vocabulary. Also some minor details will be given that were left out of the previous grammar lessons. The vocabulary in each section will be from all four lessons, plus maybe a few new words.
    Lesson One Review
In Lesson One, you learned about the definite article A/Az , equational sentences, omission of the personal pronoun, and the verb Lenni 'to be'. These are all pretty easy grammar points, but perhaps the general sentence structure was a little confusing. So the following sentences are just for you to see more examples of Hungarian sentence structure in order to improve your understanding of how the language works. Remember though, that word order is very flexible and there is almost always more than one way to form the same sentence.
