Grant was now made major-general in the regular army and placed in command of the military division of the Mississippi. His next great campaign was for the relief of Chattanooga, where the beaten and baffled army of the Cumberland was beleaguered and reduced to deplorable destitution and impotence, being cut off from supplies and almost surrounded by the enemy. On October 23, 1863, Grant reached the place, and at Wauhatchie, on the 29th, was victorious in an engagement which opened Chatanooga to reinforcements and supplies. On November 23 to 25 the battle of Chattanooga was fought, and the Confederates were swept from Lookout Mountain, out of the valley, and from the crest of Missionary Ridge, in full retreat into Georgia. On the 9th of March, 1864, the rank of lieutenant-general was conferred upon Grant, and three days later he was put in command of all the Union forces. The national Republican convention of 1868, held in Chicago, nominated him for the Presidency on the first ballot, and he was elected by a large majority. Grant's career as President cannot be said to have been brilliant. He was a soldier, and had a soldier's directness and honesty, while to political arts and chicanery he was a stranger. He strove to put the civil service on a meritorious basis, but the politicians would not sustain him, and he abandoned the effort. He succeeded in reducing the national debt. Ulysses S Grant 18th President of the United States (1869 - 77) The man that succeeded Johnson as president was another Ulster-American, Ulysses S Grant. Grant's connection with Ulster was through his mother, Hannah Simpson, who was descended from the Simpson family of Dergenagh, near dungannon. Grant's great-grandfather, John Simpson, had left Ulster for America in 11760. Ulysses Grant was born on 27 April 1822 in the little settlement of Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio. Like that other great Ulster-American, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses Grant was already a figure of national repute by the time he entered the White House. A career soldier, Grant made his mark in the American Civil War, rising eventually to become Lieutenant-General in supreme command of the Union Army. It was Grant who planned and executed the final and successful campaign against the Confederacy, receiving the surrender from General Robert E Lee at Appomatox in Virginia in April 1865. Grant served for a short period as Andrew Johnson's Secretary of War, in 1867, before running for president and winning in the election of November 1868. He served two terms as president, which unfortunately had its downs as well as its ups, with a number of his cabinet colleagues having to resign because of corrupt practices. None of these scandals however touched upon the president.

Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. One of San Diego's most distinguished residents was Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., [second]* son of the famous military president. Mr. Grant was born in Bethel, Ohio, on July 22, 1852, at a time when his illustrious father was a lieutenant in the Fourth regiment, U.S. Army. Mr. Grant attended Emerson Institute, prepared for college at Exeter and took his A. B. from Harvard University in 1874 and his LL.B. from Columbia two years later. He was admitted to the bar in New York in 1876 and was for a time assistant U.S. attorney in New York, southern district. He married Josephine Chaffee in 1880. His wife was the daughter of Senator Chaffee of Colorado. Forced by ill health to seek a milder climate, Mr. Grant and his family selected San Diego and came here in 1893. In San Diego, Mr. Grant became interested in real estate. His faith in the future of the then sleepy hillside town was shown when he launched construction of the U.S. Grant hotel. Construction of the hotel was held up two years because of the financial difficulties caused by the San Francisco fire in 1906, but the project was completed, partially through funds obtained by the sale of Grant's memoirs. Mr. Grant had an intimate knowledge of his father's experiences in the White House inasmuch as he was secretary to his father, President Grant, for eighteen months during his second term. Mr. Grant was very active politically. He was a delegate at large to the G.0.P. conventions of 1900 and 1904 and a presidential elector in 1904 and 1908. He ran for U.S. senator in 1904 but was unsuccessful.

Ulysses S. Grant Home On August 18, 1865, Galena celebrated the return of its Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant. Following a jubilant procession with much flag waving and speeches, a group of Galena citizens presented the General with a handsome furnished house on Bouthillier Street. The house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site. Grant in Galena Grant and his family arrived in Galena in the spring of 1860 and rented a small Federal style brick house (seen at the right). He had ended a fifteen year military career six years earlier, but had enjoyed little business success as a civilian. He hoped to reverse his economic misfortune by moving to northwestern Illinois, where he would work in the Galena store owned by his father and managed by his younger brothers, Simpson and Orvil. Grant was a clerk in name only; he spent considerable time away from the store, "travelling through the Northwest considerably during the winter of 1860-61. They had customers in all the little towns in south-west Wisconsin, south-east Minnesota, and northeast Iowa." Until he left Galena in the spring of 1861 to serve in the Civil War, Grant and his wife, Julia, rented a modest brick home on the west side of the river for approximately $100.00 a year.

Ulysses Simpson Grant The best evidence of the changes that had occurred in warfare from Jomini to Clausewitz can be found in the campaigns of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The latter was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio but through confusion at West Point he became Ulysses Simpson Grant. Appointed to the military academy, he found it distasteful and hoped that Congress would abolish the institution, freeing him. He excelled only in horsemanship for that he had displayed a capability early in life and graduated in 1843, 2lst out of 39 graduates. Posted to the 4th Infantry, since there were no vacancies in the dragoons, he served as regimental quartermaster during most of the Mexican War. Nonetheless he frequently led a company in combat under Zachary Taylor in northern Mexico. He came to greatly admire his chief but was transferred with his regiment to Winfield Scott's army operating from the coast. He received brevets for Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. With the resumption of peace he was for a time stationed in Mexico, a country which he came to admire greatly, and then was posted to the West coast. Separated from his wife, he tried numerous business ventures to raise enough capital to bring her to the coast but proved singularly unsuccessful. On July 31, 1854, he resigned his captaincy amid rumors of heavy drinking and warnings of possible disciplinary action by his post commander. His return to civilian life proved unsuccessful. Farming on his father-inlaw's land was a failure, as was the real estate business and attempts to gain engineering and clerk posts in St. Louis. He finally became a clerk in a family leather goods store in Galena, which was run by his two younger brothers. Before he had been there long the Civil War broke out. Offering his services to the War Department and to General George B. McClellan in Ohio, he met with no success in gaining an appointment.

A quiet, unassuming, and keenly intelligent man, Grant rose to national prominence as the commanding officer of the Union army during the Civil War . Though trained as a soldier at West Point , Grant never aspired to a military career. Of his early cadet years he wrote: "A military life had no charms for me, and I had not the faintest idea of staying in the army even if I should be graduated, which I did not expect."
