Armed with the goal of making your graphic images as small as possible without sacrificing quality to an unacceptable level, the composition of your graphic itself will help determine which format is best. JPEG files support up to 24-bit resolution, so are therefore higher in resolution (assuming you have the hardware capable of viewing 24-bit images) - at the expense of physical image size. If your image is a photograph or contains gradual color changes, then JPEG is the best format to choose. Textures, including nature images, are becoming popular as background images. These best supported in JPEG format due to the gradual color changes. Images that have large areas of solid color, black and white artwork, and graphic fonts lend themselves to the GIF format. And, if you want to create a transparent image (with one color masked out so that the image appears to float), you must use GIF89a.

The Raster3D molecular graphics package consists of a core program render and a number of ancillary programs which produce input files for rendering from Brookhaven PDB files of atomic coordinates. Raster3D can also render images composed using version 1.4 of Molscript

      SYNOPSIS
Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring two light sources, specular highlighting, Phong shaded surfaces, and shadowing. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware for operation. Four image output formats are supported: AVS, TIFF, SGI libimage, and a private format which is backwards-compatible with earlier versions of Raster3D. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). Ancillary programs are provided for the generation of object descriptions based on atomic coordinates stored in Brookhaven PDB format. Although the rendering program is not specific to molecular graphics, Raster3D is not intended as a general purpose ray-tracing program. Some of the algorithms used have been chosen for speed rather than generality; that is, they happen to work well for the types of images the program is intended for, but may produce odd results if used for very different types of image.

This page is intended to provide a few guidelines that will help you identify how best to manage color palettes for graphics you include in your Web pages. Since your pages may be viewed on computers of widely differing capabilites, it's important to understand how colors are handeled by different systems and which colors are most likely to work well on Macs, PC's and other systems. Keep in mind that color images are handled very differently in graphics software such as Photoshop than in a Web browser. What you see when you're composing graphics may not be what you get when viewing them on the Web! Knowing what's going on behind the scenes will make a big difference to your ability to predict (more or less) how things are going to look out there in the world.

Introduction, Alpha channel Color depth Dithering, Spectrum, File formats ... Lossy compression, Format features, Conclusion Introduction It goes without saying that any serious assignment depends for its fulfillment on an adequate software. Now, as we look a few decades back and analyze the classical animated cartoons of the time we can't but wonder how such results could be achieved without computer graphics. Take for instance any animated cartoon produced by Disney, Ghibli or Soyuzmultfilm studios. Strange as it may seem, the principles underlying the filmmaking in days of yore differ little from those resorted to these days. Alpha channel What is actually an alpha channel ? To understand how it works, we have to imagine a transparent animation celluloid with a picture drawn on it, say, with a girl standing against a background of a forest. The animator who is preparing the image for composing can never draw accurately the conjugate background with a character standing in it. The man is not a machine. It will take him an age to draw the ever changing background in each frame. This background could be, for instance, a forest through which the girl is walking. That is why the animators choose to do a cheap and straightforward job of changing animation celluloids and pulling below them a background drawn separately. This technique saves them decades of time which would have to be spent in the traditional drawing technology. The alpha channel performs the same function as the transparent base used to superimpose characters in animation.

Graphics Intro Just as color and value plays it's role in the successfulness of a site, so does graphics. Pictures, patterns, animations and other imagery are a definitie (optional) commodity for web-building. Aside of literary expression, graphics also help to set the tone of a webpage. Although images aren't mandatory, their ability to relay specific messages can come in handy where blatant text can sometimes be overlooked. Even still, with all the creative possibilities that come with using icons, photos, etc.; there are a few limitations. Of course it ceratinly helps for any web designer to know some basic priciples of using images on the Web. File Formats Not just any image file can be published on the web. There are a small group of file extensions that can be utilized for images on the internet, but the main two formats are JPEG J oint P hotographic E xperts G roup) and GIF G raphics I nterchange F ormat). For beginners, the distinction between the two may not be clear, so the following list will give important information about each format and their uses.
