Graphics, Animations Sounds , and Videos Overview
In this section, we discuss issues concerned with using multi-media components with web pages. At the end of this section, you will be able to
  • discuss formats for graphics, sound and video and select the appropriate format for a specific purpose compare formats for graphics, sound and video have an appreciation for other technology tools for the display of information
Graphics
There are many formats for storing pictures in digital format. Images associated with personal computer systems are stored in pixel format. A pixel is an individual dot or element with associated intensity and color information. Pixels are combined to form images. The size of each pixel is a function of the quality of the monitor. For most monitors, the pixel size is about 0.28mm. Color Depth
Some storage formats for pictures involve compression , a technique that reduces the amount of storage space required for the picture, often at the expense of quality. Other formats alter the color depth of the image, as less color will require less storage space. Color depth refers to the number of unique colors used by the image. Using more colors in a picture will require more storage space (bytes). For instance, a single bit can be either on or off. This would correspond to two colors, black and white. Using 8 bits for each pixel would result in a color depth of 256 colors. The more colors you have, the more realistic and natural the image looks. The following table shows the connection between color depth and the number of bits representing that color depth.

Composing Active Proxies to Extend the Web
Rohit Khare rohit@uci.edu , University of California at Irvine Adam Rifkin adam@cs.caltech.edu , California Institute of Technology
Introduction
In considering the future of "compositional software architectures" as rendered through distributed object systems and on the World Wide Web, it is useful to set aside the hype of new technologies and consider what is already being accompished with existing infrastructures. On the Web, users and developers have already adopted two powerful ways to compose active processing with information distribution: active pages ("cgi-bin") and active proxies . In this position paper, we focus on the latter as a tool for parties beyond the original developer to externalize extensions to a software or information architecture.
Our Position
Independent extensibility is a critical affordance of compositional software architectures. To realize the full potential of concurrent evolution of systems by all the system's stakeholders, architects should be encouraged to support externalized, component-oriented hooks. In particular, active proxies on the Web demonstrate the power of independent evolution and the serendipitous synergy of orthogonal services. Soon, HTTP in conjunction with PEP will systematize this power and bring it to clients and servers as well.
Examples of Active Proxies
When fetching a resource through the HyperText Transport Protocol, clients can contact the origin server

The Internet in one form or another has been around for more than thirty years. Yet it's only in the past few years that the Internet's popularity has exploded and continues to explode. One big reason for the sudden explosion in the Internet's popularity is the Internet's move from a text only medium to a very graphics oriented medium. Engaging graphics is the magic that attracts so many people to the Internet and Web surfing. Consider how boring a newspaper or magazine with no pictures or terrible pictures is. Newspapers, magazines, and other publications with engaging color graphics are more interesting than publications with black and white (monochrome) pictures. Growth of the Web
In 1990, the developers of the World Wide Web (WWW) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland started letting other scientific Internet users know they had developed the WWW document format. Among other things, the then new WWW format allowed graphics to be used within documents transmitted over the Internet regardless of the type of graphics capable computer used, by using a graphics capable WWW browser.

http://mamba.bio.uci.edu/html/raster3d/raster3d.html
SYNOPSIS The Raster3D molecular graphics package consists of a core program render and a number of ancillary programs ( balls ribbon rods ) which produce input files for rendering from Brookhaven PDB files of atomic coordinates. Raster3D can also render images composed using version 1.4 of Molscript [Per Kraulis (1991) J. Appl. Cryst. 24, 946-950]. Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring two light sources, specular highlighting, Phong shaded surfaces, and shadowing. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware for operation. Four image output formats are supported: AVS, TIFF, SGI libimage, and a private format which is backwards-compatible with earlier versions of Raster3D. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). Although the rendering program is not specific to molecular graphics, Raster3D is not intended as a general purpose ray-tracing program. Ancillary programs are provided only for the generation of object descriptions based on atomic coordinates stored in Brookhaven PDB format. Raster3D Version 2.1 supports rendering of five object types: spheres, triangles, planes, smooth-ended cylinders, and round-ended cylinders. New in version 2.1 is support for two additional "object types" which are really modifiers for characteristic properties of existing objects. One of these allows specification of explicit surface normals at triangle vertices; the other allows specification of surface reflectance properties specific to individual objects. Neither of these features is used by the current version of the auxilliary programs distributed with Raster3D, but their inclusion may encourage use of the Raster3D rendering program in conjunction with other code which depends on these capabilities. The provision for explicit surface normals, for example, should allow the use of Raster3D to render general molecular surfaces.

Adobe pumps graphics muscle into campus user rooms
Since the advent of the desktop-publishing revolution some 10 years ago, Adobe Systems Inc. has been a leader in providing tools for the creation of graphics and multimedia. Recently, the company has also become a leader in the Web explosion, with a slate of electronic publishing tools. What Adobe has long lacked is a good educational license program, which is why its products have not appeared in UCS user areas. Until now, that is. Late this summer, UCS purchased such a license, paving the way for economical administration of software from centralized servers. UCS's new multi-platform (Mac OS, Windows 95 and UNIX) license from Adobe capitalizes on the company's line of authoring tools. The software is now available throughout UCS-supported user areas, including KOH 200, WPH B34, the Leavey Library Information Commons, SAL 125, and in the Taper Hall of Humanities. The software covers an array of graphics, desktop publishing, multimedia authoring and electronic publishing tools. Adobe Photoshop Photoshop is the leading photo-design and production tool, offering a wealth of painting and selection features. Image-editing tools and filters let users retouch and correct true-color or black-and-white scanned images. Photoshop includes support for multiple layers, lighting effects, color-correction and full GIF 89a support for creating Web graphics. Also available for the Mac OS and Windows 95 platform are the Adobe Gallery Effects filters, which let users transform ordinary images into natural-looking works of art, including chalk and charcoal, emboss, fresco, mosaic, graphic pen and spatter.

Producing an electronic newsletter is cheap and fast because there is no printer or postage involved. ItÂ’s possible to write, format, and distribute an e-newsletter all in one day or maybe an hour making it ideal for urgent messages. E-newsletters are distributed by e-mail, through a website, or both. Not only do you have to choose between those three distribution options, but you must also decide what format or combination of formats you will use. The following chart can help you make that decision. Below the chart we will describe in greater detail each format option, its advantages and disadvantages, and what kinds of software the newsletter readers need to view the publication. Newsletter format Software required Main advantages Disadvantages Plain text e-mail Any e-mail software Cannot include color, vary fonts, or use basic formatting such as bold, italic, tables, bullets, etc.
