Swiss Soccer Match Reports
One of my hobbies is watching live soccer matches, and in 1994, I've start writing match reports about them for the Swiss Soccer Mailing List (Whose main purpose is actually to run an elaborate gambling ring This page currently mostly contains my own match reports and therefore mostly contains Grasshoppers matches and mostly the home matches among them, but I'll gladly take contributions from others. Having movied to the United States last year, I don't watch any soccer games at the moment, so don't expect much dynamics here. I still try to keep up with Swiss club soccer and the exploits (or lack thereof) of the Swiss National Team , but I have to get my news from other sites now.

Grasshopper Identification Guides / Fact Sheets Grasshopper species identification is an integral part of any management effort. While there are more than 400 known species of grasshoppers in the Western United States, only about two dozen are considered pest species capable of producing economic damage. A few species are actually beneficial because they eat undesirable plants. Several identification guides and keys are provided to help identify grasshopper species and monitor their populations. Grasshoppers
Michael Saxton
There are 18,000 kinds of grasshoppers in the world. The specific grasshopper I'm going to talk about is the Ebony Grasshopper. But before I do that I'm going to tell a few major facts about all grasshoppers to give a base before I go into detail about a specific grasshopper. Grasshoppers are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Grasshoppers have no ears, so they hear with an organ called tympanum. Most grasshopper have five eyes. It's very rare to find one with fewer or more eyes than five eyes. Most types of grasshoppers have two pairs of wings. They use these wings to make music by rubbing their wings, snapping their wings while they are flying, or rubbing their hind legs across their front wings. When the female lays her eggs, she covers them with a paste-like liquid that will protect them during the winter. A Grasshopper can leap 20 times the length of its own body. Grasshoppers can be found almost everywhere in the world, except for the colder regions near the North and South poles. They live in fields, meadows, and just about anywhere they can find generous amounts of leaves to eat. Each year grasshoppers cause millions of dollars of damage to various types of plants. When a grasshopper is picked up, they "spit" a brown liquid which is known by most kids and adults as "tobacco juice". Nobody knows what this "spit" does though. The grasshoppers greatest enemies include various kinds of flies that lay their eggs in or near grasshopper eggs. After the fly eggs hatch, the newborn flies eat the grasshopper eggs. Some flies will even lay their eggs on the grasshopper's body. Other enemies of grasshoppers include beetles, birds, snakes, and spiders. Another dangerous enemy of the grasshopper is the shoe. The shoe comes in various shapes and sizes, but all are equally dangerous to the grasshopper.

Lists information about grasshoppers such as predators, appearance, habitat, diet, and heavior.

Grasshopper Information
Return to previous page Phylum , Arthropoda; Class , Insecta; Order , Orthoptera
Identifying Features Appearance (Morphology)
  • Brown, with some darker markings
  • Black herringbone pattern on hind femur
  • Big hind legs for jumping
  • 2 pairs of wings: forewings narrow and relatively hard; hind wings large, membranous
  • Antennae not very long, 20-24 segments
  • Conspicuous eyes
  • Cerci (pair of appendages at end of abdomen) unjointed
Adult Males and Females
Males have a single unpaired plate at the end of abdomen. Female has two pairs of valves (triangle shapes) at end of abdomen used to dig in sand when egg laying. Immatures (different stages)
In very young stage, the grasshopper has no wings. In later stages, wings are visible as small pads at end of thorax.
Natural History Food
Many species of grasshoppers are general herbivores feeding on a variety of plants. Some species only like grasses. Habitat
Widespread in U.S. Predators
Birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents eat grasshoppers. Interesting Behaviors
Feeding: Although they eat many things, they still have preferences. Mating behavior: See how male courts female. Egg-laying: Female digs hole with abdomen. Some grasshoppers spit a brown bitter liquid as a defensive behavior in response to being handled. Use a piece of white paper and gently wipe the grasshopper's mouth if the spit is not evident. Before molting, grasshoppers do not eat and become less active. During the molt, they swallow air to build up pressure to split the old cuticle.

Extension Entomologist Grasshoppers are among the most widespread and damaging pests in Texas. Approximately 150 species of grasshoppers are known to exist in the state; however, the following five species cause 90 percent of the damage to crops, gardens, trees and shrubs: Differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentalis . Adults are 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 inches long. Black chevron markings on the hind femur help identify this grasshopper. Black individuals may occur. Moving in from weedy borders, they are very destructive in cultivated crops. They are seldom found in grassland. Red-legged grasshopper, Melanoplus femurrubrum . Adults are 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches long. The hind tibia are red. They are especially damaging to alfalfa and other legumes, but can be an important pest in other crops. They are of very little importance in grassland. Migratory grasshopper

59. Eating Grasshoppers - Adding Insects To The Menu
Eating grasshoppers insects are full of protein, nutritious and delicious andeating them could lead to a reduction in livestock killed and reduce the need
http://www.globalideasbank.org/1993/1993-100.HTML
Eating grasshoppers
Summarised from a letter by Annie Rovelstad of Willow Springs, Missouri in the intriguing free 'Food Insects Newsletter' (Nov. '92, available from Gene DeFoliart, Department of Entomology, 545 Russell Laboratories, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706, USA) monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights. I tried my first grasshoppers and katydids this morning; thanks to The Food Insects Newsletter for giving me the courage and permission. I was raised like most others that even the thought of eating bugs was a total 'gross-out.' It's just a general thing parents teach little kids, like don't eat wild berries and don't play with snakes and spiders. 'Two-inch grasshoppers and not much to them except abdomen. Just rather creamy, mildly sweet' Now that I'm doing organic gardening and homesteading and trying to be very practical and efficient, I wondered if there was any predator for the numerous grasshoppers in my garden. Seeing none and having heard they were eaten in other countries, I enthusiastically subscribed to your newsletter, which said in effect it is OK to eat 'bugs.' You have now created an efficient 'grasshopper predator!' These were rather small two-inch grasshoppers and not much to them except abdomen, but I was quite pleased to find it didn't taste strong or exotic or strange of texture. Just rather creamy, mildly sweet, definitely protein with a bit of oil and a slightly chewy outer layer. The Editor of the Food Insect Newsletter adds a rider to her letter:
