We will leave our various homes and take a transatlantic flight to London.
Our first highlight of the morning will be a visit to the London (LDS) Temple. cathedral and shrine Our final stop today will be at Brighton. Originally a poor fishing village, Brighton was transformed into a lovely resort in the 18 th century. It has two piers, many antique shops, and the extraordinary Royal Pavilion.
Stonehenge has been the subject of study and speculation for hundreds of years. Believed to have religious and astronomical significance, it has been called the greatest single wonder of the prehistoric world. We will continue to Bath, which has been known for its mineral waters since Roman times and attracted many English aristocrats during the 18 th century. The lovely Georgian Crescent of houses makes walks around the city rewarding. There is also an interesting 15 th -century abbey.

http://www.mnhs.org/places/sites/hfs/history.html
Historic Fort Snelling: A Brief History of Fort Snelling Historic Fort Snelling The story of Fort Snelling is the story of the development of the U.S. Northwest. While surrounded today by freeways and a large urban population, Fort Snelling was once a lonely symbol of American ambition in the wilderness. The United States gained control over the Upper Mississippi Valley through the Revolutionary War with Great Britain and later Louisiana Purchase from France. This vast territory inhabited by fur traders and Indians still loyal to the British in Canada lay well beyond American settlement. After the War of 1812, the government took physical possession of the valuable Northwest frontier by establishing a chain of Indian agencies and supporting forts from Lake Michigan to the Missouri River. An Outpost in the Wilderness These outposts denied non-citizens commercial use of American rivers. British control of the rich fur trade ended. The United States Army kept American Indian lands free of white encroachment until appropriate treaties were signed; apprehended outlaws; and protected law-abiding travelers and traders. In 1819, the 5th Regiment of Infantry arrived at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers to build the northwest link in this chain of forts and agencies. Here, where traffic could be controlled on two major rivers, Fort Snelling was completed in 1825.

Prehistoric Britain As there is no written evidence available, information about the earliest settlers in Britain is minimal. The traces of domestic life that have been found indicate that the people were largely nomadic and stayed in caves for shelter. They also built makeshift huts. Archaeological digs have uncovered pits, hearths, tools and post-holes dating from around 6000 BC. The remains of animals long extinct in the UK such as mammoth, lion, woolly rhinoceros, hyena, bear and wolf have also been found in the rubbish heaps of caves known to have been occupied. Few Neolithic settlements survive today. The most impressive are to be found at

$20 million to endow new educational program and preserve endangered sites in the U.K.; first program is annual Paul Mellon Lecture series, inaugurated in February 2003 in New York.
Ms. Burnham states, "The gift from the estate of the great American philanthropist Paul Mellon continues his exceptional generosity to the World Monuments Fund during his lifetime. His dedication to the preservation of monuments to human achievement was unmatched. The gift will provide crucial operating income for the Fund’s education program, and will help ensure the conservation of cultural heritage sites in Great Britain, which was of special interest to Mr. Mellon. We are delighted that the inaugural Paul Mellon Lecture was delivered by Dr. Smith, his first presentation in this country since assuming his new role at London’s National Gallery."
    New Focus on Public Education
Heritage Preservation in the United Kingdom
The Church’s architect, Nicholas Hawksmoor, began his career as an assistant to Sir Christopher Wren and later to Sir John Vanbrugh, developing expertise through his work on several major buildings, including Blenheim Palace and Wren’s City of London churches. The six churches Hawksmoor designed in London during the transitional period from the seventeenth and eighteenth century, including St. George’s, are the architect’s best-known works and earned him renown as the preeminent Baroque architect working in England. St. George’s portico, based on the third-century Greek Temple of Baalbek, is among the grandest of London’s eighteenth-century church façades. Moreover, the building has a rich cultural history: It is depicted in one of Hogarth’s best-known engravings, "Gin Lane," and was the setting for Charles Dickens’s "A Bloomsbury Christening." Anthony Trollope, the Victorian novelist, was baptized there.

    CALGARY, AB
Zondervan, North America's largest religious publishing house, is introducing a new series of guidebooks aimed at the burgeoning Christian travel market, a niche largely ignored until now. The first four books in the Christian Travelers Guide series focus on Italy, France, Germany and Great Britain and were compiled by a noted Canadian religious studies professor who has traveled widely. "Christians and other religious travelers are handicapped when they visit Europe because traditional guidebooks pay scant attention to religious sites other than major cathedrals and the occasional graveyard," says Irving Hexham, the series general editor and professor at the University of Calgary, a major Canadian university with 25,000 students. "We want to fill that void and offer travelers an opportunity to easily enjoy the rich and bountiful religious history and heritage of England and Europe," said Hexham, a native of Manchester, England who studied in Germany
