Great Britain History
A Guide to Microtext Collections at MTSU Library
Acts of the Privy Council of England. Colonial Series, 1613-1783 MCD 1504
Excellent primary source material on the administration and history of British colonies. Other series of published records of the Council cover earlier and later periods, but this one reveals the large share the Council played in the work of colonial administration. These records of transactions of the Council fall into three parts: (1)chronological accounts of the proceedings written by one of the clerks; (2)The "Plantation Register", bound separately, in which from 1677 to 1806, with certain gaps, are recorded various colonial laws passed or approved by the Council, the instructions issued to Governors, and certain formal letters written to them; and (3)a large mass of unbound papers consisting mainly of petitions and reports issued to the Council by the Board of Trade.
  • Format: Microcard Please note that a printed copy cannot be made from this format
  • Access: The Register contains an index, the Plantation Register contains a short index at the end of each volume, and the unbound papers are in rough chronological order

The British Isles have a rich history going back thousands of years. Unfortunately few of us in Britain really know much about our history. Retrospectively I think there must have been something radically flawed with history as it is taught in out schools as our history is fascinating. For this history guide, we shall divide the period of British history into four main chunks, and each of these four main chunks then subdivided into bite sized chapters that try to explain the way that things happened History is an interweaving of events and people, and its not just about kings and queens, its about ordinary people and how events influenced them, and on occasions how they influenced events. Also one has to realise that Britain is not one nation, but a hodge podge of different peoples who tend to remain distinct in spite of a millenium or more of intermarriage. I have therefore put in separate chapters on Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each with its own history

Great Britain Historical Database Online Documentation
The Great Britain Historical database (GBH) provides a large integrated database of geographically-located historical statistics for Great Britain, mainly drawn from the period 1851-1939. It is integrated in the sense that a large amount of work has gone into integrating the referencing of spatial units within the system and, where practical, into assembling data from different dates into single tables. The documentation provided here does not reflect the present state of the still expanding GBH Database at the University of Portsmouth. Please consult their GBH Database Home Page for further information. This documentation is based on a guide which was originally prepared for internal use at QMW. It aims to provide a fairly formal description of the tables making up the database. The description of each table includes the name, type and an indication of the contents of each field in the tables, and explains how the table was constructed from the original source and how creators and depositors have dealt with special cases. Some information has been included on the checking procedures followed to locate any mistakes made during data entry. References are provided to published studies based on the database.

    http://www.rigb.org/heritage/
For more than two hundred years the Royal Institution of Great Britain has been at the centre of scientific research and the popularisation of science in England. Within its walls some of the major scientific discoveries of the last two centuries have been made. These include the discovery of sodium and potassium by Humphry Davy , electro-magnetic induction by Michael Faraday , why the sky is blue by John Tyndall , the liquefaction of hydrogen by James Dewar , the structure of benzene by Kathleen Lonsdale under William Henry Bragg and the first enzyme to have its structure determined by David Chilton Phillips under William Lawrence Bragg . The technological applications of some of this research has transformed the way we live. Furthermore, most of these scientists were first rate communicators who were able to inspire their audiences with an appreciation of science. This was achieved through the provision of a number of lecture series. One of the characteristic features of lectures at the Royal Institution is the inclusion of experimental demonstrations. Indeed so popular were the
