The Bible: An Introduction to Archeology By Dr. Thomas L. Long Forget Indiana Jones. Archeology generallyand biblical archeology in particularis a tedious, methodical science involving a variety of tests and experiments that yield remarkable results. Ancient civilizations tended to build on top of previous ones, so that mounds called "tells" formed, preserving earlier layers under later construction. The arid desert conditions of the Middle East are frequently hospitable to the preservation of organic remains. Using these data, archeologists develop hypotheses, gather more data, develop theories and publish their findings in order to have their conclusions tested. Biblical archeology related to the Hebrew scriptures (what Christians call the Old Testament) presents a particular challenge in that it studies the prehistoric period in Palestine (i.e. before the profusion of written records) as well as the historic period, a time span of about two millennia. Although its geographical area is not wide, its chronology is considerable. It is supplemented by archeological studies of the surrounding empires, including Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and Greece. Biblical archeology of the Christian scriptures (the New Testament) only focuses on the first and early second centuries CE (of the Common Era), but includes a more expansive territory: Palestine, Asia Minor (what is Turkey today), Greece, Rome, and Egypt. It is also an archeology of an historical period in which there is considerable documentary evidence.

News From the Interzone: Athens, Greece, February 2001
Well now, what can be said about Athens? So many thousands of tomes have been written about the renowned city of Pericles, Socrates, Lysias, Demosthenes, Aristophanes, Euripides, Thucidydes, Aristotle and Plato, et tanti alii... Athens, sacred to the goddess Athena, goddess of artifice and craft, in many ways the birthplace of democracy, and central to the origin of so many of the basic institutions of western man. Indeed verily the name resounds with suggestions of past glory and recalls the enormous achievements of the inhabitants of that small town of Attica in the fifth and fourth centuries b.c.e. Who has not heard of Athens? Who is unaware of her? Well in any case things have progressed as they have and there is no turning back for Athens as she enters a new millennium. Certainly the Olympics can only be a good thing for Athens as I don't really see how the city could get much worse short of being ruled by the Talibanbut it will likely be a nightmare scenario for athletes and spectators alike. Well they claim they are on schedule in their preparations but I remain skeptical. In any case, I can foresee that doing away with such ingrained customs is going to be a problem for the Olympics committeefor now they are just hoping to have enough bedsas it is, Athens is pretty well booked for

Black African travelers reach international destinations prior to Europeans
[This article does not claim superiority of African peoples over European peoples or other peoples. Nor does it aim to discount the achievements of non-Africans. Its purpose is to highlight some lesser-known achievements of Africans.] In modern America, we hear of pre-modern black Africans traveling beyond Africa in very limited contexts: they traveled only because they were relocated by non-African (or at least non-black) slave traders or conquerors. This contributes to the stereotype of African blacks as a passive people without the curiosity and desire to venture beyond their immediate surroundings. Some believe Europeans have a decided "natural" edge over Africans because of the supposedly European characteristic of an active mind and a thirst for adventure. Black Africans apparently did not go anywhere by themselves nor did they want to. This article will cover some instances of pre-modern black Africans traveling outside Africa as free people; as traders, explorers, conquerors, colonists and ambassadors; as people of initiative and power.
    Africans in Old Asia
Asia joins Africa, so it is almost redundant to point out that East Africans and North Africans have crossed over to West Asia, and West Asians have crossed over to North and East Africa continuously since ancient times.

    Archeology
The concern for archeological values in Albania started as early as the 19th century when scholars of historical geography devoted their research to the localisation and identification of records from ancient sources.
The first to pay a visit to Albania is the French Pouqueville (F.C.H.L. Pouqueville, Voyage dans la Gréce, comprenant la description ancienne et moderne de l’Epire,
A French archaeological mission, headed by Leon Rey, launched its systematic researches from 1924 until 1938, whose results were published in the Albania magazine (L. Rey, Albanie, Revue d’archéologie, Paris 1925-1939 in six volumes). In 1926, an Italian archaeological mission started researches in the ancient city of Phoenicia and then in Butrint. The Italian mission was initially led by L. Ugolini to be replaced later by Marconi and Mustill (L. Ugolini, Albania Antica, Roma 1927-1942, 3 vol.); D.Mustill, La civilta preistorica dell’Albania, Roma 1940).
After the Second World War till 1990, the Albanian archaeologists carried out both archaeological researches and studies. In 1948, the first Archaeological-Ethnographic Museum was set up in Tirana, in 1976 the department of the Archaeological Research Studies was established, and in 1991 the Institute of Archaeology. During the past half-century, apart from the Central Archaeological Museum and an archaeological showcase in the National Historic Museum, museums of an archaeological type were established in Durrës, Apollonia, Butrint, Korça, where unique artifacts are displayed.
