The Name Dispute
When the Republic of Macedonia declared independence in 1991, Greece immediately objected to its name and flag, claiming that the name Macedonia belongs to Greece and therefore, no country can use this name. Greece subsequently started a propaganda campaign against Macedonia in order to prevent it from receiving international recognition. Despite Greece's objections, over 40 countries recognized Macedonia under its constitutional name, including Russia, China, Bulgaria, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Phillipines, among many others. The rest of the world, (including the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, France, Germany, etc.), following the direction of the United Nations, recognized Macedonia under the temporary name "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia." Greece's original position was that "no state entity appropriating the name Macedonia will ever be recognized" and that the name Macedonia cannot be included in the name of the country. Greece suggested names for the Republic of Macedonia such as "Republic of Skopje" and the "Central Balkan Republic" among many others. Although Greece is a signatory of many international human rights agreements, they have not ratified a single one. The

The culture of the Midlands reflects the layered heritage of its past. A fusion of tradition with the most modern amenities has brought vibrancy to the region. As well as reflecting the attitudes and interests of its people, Midlands' culture is profoundly influenced by its physical surrounds. Dynamic urban areas offer a fascinating contrast to the solitude of mountain and bog.
It is the solitude that has drawn artists and writers to the area through the centuries. Oliver Goldsmith immortalised the area around Lissoy in his poetry, especially in "The Deserted Village". Anthony Trollope and Charlotte Bronte drew inspiration while staying in Banagher; Maria Edgeworth wrote elegantly of her native Longford. Poets, dramatists and novelists, both native and visiting continue to find the Midlands a haven in which to write, as well as an inspiration for their work. Musicians, whether modern or traditional Irish, have been similarly elevated by the surrounds in which they reside and perform. This landscape, which has long seduced the creative mind, has also brought many others seeking to explore an unspoiled region. The forests, glens, rivers and waterfalls of the Slieve Bloom Mountains offer an infinite variety of treks. Alternatively, the waterways of the region, with the branches of the Grand Canal linking into the Shannon, the last great-undrained river of Europe, conjure images of a more sedate past. Free from commercial traffic, only pleasure cruisers and fishermen trouble the silence.

Discussion Group on Reference Work Report
Report from the Meeting held at the 65th IFLA General Conference
23 August 1999 Bangkok The theme of this year's Reference Work Discussion Group was "The New Definition of Reference Work in a Changing Reference Culture". More than 100 people attended the meeting from different parts of the world, which stressed the interest and the importance of maintaining and developing professional reference service within the new cultures with regard to information access and dissemination. There were eight papers contributed and four of the authors were present at the meeting. The paper entitled: "Post Amazon. Com Reference Culture: The Work of Reference Librarians in the Age of Smart Machines" , by Myoung Chung Wilson, is based on a preliminary survey conducted by the author and on the survey conducted by the Reference Discussion Group in 1997-1998. These two surveys assess the changing nature of reference work. Based on the results, the author summarizes the current and emerging practicies of reference work. The conclusion highlights the changing relationship between reference librarians and users. The paper "Reference Culture: Change in Theory or Tempo" by Sharon Gause and Yolanda Maloney, deals with the idea that although many changes have taken place in libraries vis-a -vis the advent of technology, reference work has remained the same: change has been in the number and format of sources at the librarian's and user's disposal.

Zabreiko In modern times mathematics has become an inseparable part of human culture, in which it plays a fundamental role. Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics.

Greece Time and Date Greece Culture Back to Top The important sites of Greek antiquity that attracted European noblemen to the Greek lands in the 18th century, and which were such a potent influence on architectural styles in the West, continue to attract tourists from all over the world. Newly excavated sites such as the supposed tomb of Philip II of Macedon at Verghina and the Pompei-like remains at Thera are further indications of an astonishingly rich heritage from antiquity that has still not been fully explored. Over the past century there has been a greater awareness of the richness of the architectural and artistic heritage of the medieval empire of Byzantium. Principal museums devoted to Greek antiquities include the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, and the Acropolis Museum, all in Athens, and the archaeological museums in Olympia and Thessaloníki. The archaeological museum in Iráklion on the island of Crete has an impressive collection of Minoan and early Greek antiquities. Also in Athens are the Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, focused on the ancient Aegean Cycladic culture; the Benaki Museum, devoted to postclassical art and antiquities; and the National Historical Museum, housed in the old parliament building, with collections relating to Greek independence and the country’s subsequent expansion. The Museum of Greek Folk Art in Athens contains a rich collection of traditional costumes.

Kardamili lies approximately at the centre of Outer or Messinian Mani. Here the architecture is striking, with tall, narrow houses, sturdy structures with thick walls and few windows built of local, pastel-colored stone and tiles or grey slate. The landscape matches the buildings for grandeur: forever dominating the eastern skyline is the massive, rocky ridge of Taygetus (2407 meters), snow-capped until late April. Its higher foothills, deprived of water by underground channels and caves in the porous limestone, are dry and lunar in appearance. But towards the coast, the rivers re-emerge to feed fields of crops and olive groves.
In spring buds offset the brown and white of the higher ground to dramatic effect. Olives and olive oil, packed in Kalamata (the county capital), are the biggest and proudest export of the region, with local honey and figs also boosting the economy. Some unusual cheeses, such as the creamy "sfela," are the fruit of the huge goat population, while further south farmers gather salt.
The magnificent Byzantine fortress of Mystras lies on a sharp, conical hill. Separated into three parts-the Kastro (fortress), upper town and lower town-this historic settlement used to be the Byzantine capital of the Peloponnese, and indeed the last Byzantine civilization.
