    Government policies in GREECE
  • Government plans/focus in IT policies One of the key aims of fundamental EU policy is to encourage the free movement of people and goods within its borders. As a result, the European Council met in Corfu, Greece in June 1994 and called for a European action to be drawn up. The resulting action plan laid out the EC's ambitious program for Europe's information society. One of the largest hurdles facing the establishment of an information society in Europe is the lack of liberation in telecommunications. The council decided that telecommunications should be liberalized by January 1996. This new EU directive 90/988/EEC has already been extended to include plans for liberalizing the cable TV and satellite infrastructure and gives the Commission sole power to break up state monopolies. Some member states, due to inferior networks will get their deadlines extended. Greece has been privilaged with a five year extension. Greece is presently trying to meet these requirements set by the EU. OTE, a government controlled organization, is now openning up their makets for foreign entry into their telecommunications industry.

The Internet creates new challenges as well as new opportunities with regard to the relationship of citizens to society, and with respect to policy making and the way governance is conducted. The Internet is a key instrument for diffusing knowledge and facilitating communication among people. Continue Programme of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union, January-June 2003 GREECE UNDERTAKES URGENT HUMANITARIAN ACTION IN ORDER TO COPE WITH THE CRISIS IN IRAQ For several months now, the Greek Foreign Ministry has been preparing to cope with humanitarian problems arising from the war in Iraq. This preparation has been carried out discretely, since Greece's priority both in her national capacity as well as in her capacity as Presidency of the Council of the European Council was to solve the problem through diplomatic channels. Today, it is apparent that there is a pressing need for humanitarian aid action. Continue Foreign Policy The International Development Cooperation policy of Greece and the case of the Hellenic Plan for the Economic Reconstruction of the Balkans (HiPERB) In conformity with its obligations as a member state of the European Union and as a member of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD, Greece has committed itself to allocate annually 0,20% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to international development aid.

    Terrorism and the Greek Left
"For God's sake, do something about the terrorism!"
George Tenet, Greek - American director of CIA,
to Hrissohoides, Greek socialist minister of Public Order
Balafas, Maziotis: the first was acquitted
and the second was considered to have "virtuous intent"! 7 November 1999 On 3 November 1999 the newspaper "Washington Post" published an extremely interesting article about the action of terrorist organizations in Greece. According to the publication American and Greek officials say that "the members of terrorist organizations have been drawn from the same anti-dictatorial organizations that gave birth to PASOK party. It is reasonable to assume that they don't want to search every nook and cranny. If the leader of 17 November is arrested and is proved that it was one of the best friends of the leader of PASOK, they will be brought to a very difficult position". Unfortunately the Greek leftist political and newspaper establishment, instead of answering to the serious and well-documented accusations of the most reliable American newspaper, chose to answer with abuses and jeers, showing its characteristic low ethical level. Whoever has happened to be in Greece in periods of murderous terrorist attackes, knows very well that terrorism is nothing but a fringe phenomenon. The largest Greek newspapers (Eleftherotypia, Nea, Ethnos) belong to the Left and have as main topic the murders, which they call legalizingly executions, with big red (as the blood of the victims) letters. The proclamations of the terrorist organizations are always "sent" to these newspapers, however none has ever seen the senders.
