The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. General Outlineof Greek History; History of Ancient Greece; World History Greece.

One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warefare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete.
The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and thecivilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

Neolithic Period (6000 - 2900)

Early Bronze Age (2900 - 2000) The period in antiquity that corresponds to the introduction of metallurgy, notably bronze-working, for making tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects.

History
During the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC) the powerful Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean maritime civilisations flourished. According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed, due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon, Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King , Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. The classical age came to an end with the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 AD) in which the militaristic Spartans defeated the Athenians. While embroiled in the Peloponnesian Wars, the Spartans failed to notice the expansion of Philip of Macedon's kingdom in the north, which enabled him to easily conquer the war-weary city-states. Philip's ambitions were surpassed by his son Alexander the Great, who marched into Asia Minor, Egypt (where he was proclaimed pharaoh and founded the city of Alexandria), Persia and parts of what are now Afghanistan and India. The reign of the Macedonian empire, which lasted in the form of three dynasties after Alexander's death at the age of 33, is known as the Hellenistic period, due to the merging of Greek ideas and culture with the other proud cultures of antiquity, creating a new cosmopolitan tradition.

Greece History of Greece Though its recorded history goes back thousands of years, modern-day Greece was shaped largely in the past several centuries. The Ottoman Empire took control of Greece in the 15th century and governed until 1821 when the War of Independence began. A monarchy, installed in 1832 under Prince Otto of Bavaria, was abolished and reinstated twice during the 20th century before the last king was ousted by a 1974 referendum, when a military junta that took power in 1967 was also booted out. That year, the nation finally returned to democracy, a concept that was born there two and a half millennia earlier. It's important for first-time visitors to know that although many of the temples and archaeological sites are well preserved or have been restored, others are in near-total ruin. Initially, travelers should stick to the best-known sites. Once they've become acquainted with Greek history, they will find visits to even the poorest ruins to be rewarding.

Greece has a history stretching back more than 4.000 years. The people of the mainland, called Hellenes, organized great naval and military expeditions, and explored the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, going as far as the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus Mountains. One of those expeditions, the siege of Troy, is narrated in the first great European literary work, Homer's Iliad. Numerous Greek settlements were founded throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa as a result of travels in search of new markets.
During the Classical period (5th century BC), Greece was composed of city-states, the largest being Athens, followed by Sparta and Thebes. A fierce spirit of independence and love of freedom enabled the Greeks to defeat the Persians in famous battles - Marathon, Thermopylae Salamis and Plataea.

    Crete's History
    Told Through Minoan Ruins

The shores of the Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first civilizations in Europe; the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. A Dark Age followed, until around 800 BC a new Hellenic Greece emerged. It was this Greece of city-states that established colonies along the Mediterranean, resisted Persian invasions, and whose culture would be the basis of Hellenistic civilization that followed the empire of Alexander the Great.
The beginning of the Bronze Age around 3100 BC is a period of great unrest in Crete, but it also marks the beginning of Crete as an important center of civilization.
Around 1700 BC, a large disturbance, probably an earthquake, (or possibly an invasion from Turkey) devastated the society. But the population rose again, and the palaces were rebuilt even larger than before. Around 1650 BC, the eruption of the volcanic island Thera caused tsunami which destroyed installations near the coasts. The sulphur dioxide emitted by the volcano also caused a decline in temperature, which resulted in poor harvests for several years.
Some archeologists think that the Minoans lost their religious faith in the ability of the priests to control nature.

    Ancient Greece
By the standards of the times Bronze Age (3000-1000B.C.) Ancient Greece was comparatively sophisticated but was also strongly influenced by the yet more accomplished Minoan civilization based on Crete that strongly flourished from 2000 -1450 B.C.
Minoan Crete maintained an extensive network of trading links that brought influences drawn from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Crete. The Minoans exported pottery, grains, wines, and oils, and tended to import luxury materials such as precious metals, jewels, and ivory. Minoan culture gave rise to several great cities that featured stone buildings and provision for a water supply and drainage. The city adjacent to the great Palace of Knossos was home, at its peak, to almost one hundred thousand people. Knossos was thus one of the first major cities in human history!!!   On the Greek mainland meanwhile Mycenaen authority was exercised through a number of localised kingdoms. These kingdoms may have adopted written record keeping based on Minoan examples.   In or around 1450 B.C. one of the most cataclysmic volcanic eruptions in recorded history, that may have involved tidal waves, earth quakes, and crop failures, severely disrupted Minoan civilisation and the Mycenaens were able to bring Minoan Crete under their sway and to displace the Minoans in exercising a widespread power and influence.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... GREECE Greece produced the most brilliant of the ancient civilizations. At its apex, between the fifth and third centuries B.C., the Greeks were the indisputable leaders of the world in philosophy, art, politics, and science. The civilization of Greece was spread by commerce and by war, as much of the known world fell to Alexander the Great. Upon his death, however, the empire began to disintegrate. It was absorbed into the Roman Empire, and later into the Byzantine. When the Ottomans swept to power, they also took over Greece (1460) which they controlled for the next 350 years. Under the Ottomans, the Greeks preserved their national heritage and in 1821, Greece rebelled against the Ottomans. Supported by a powerful trio of friends (Russia, Britain, and France), Greece declared its independence in 1827. Ruled by a German prince selected by the Western powers, Greece deposed him, In 1863, King George I, a Danish prince, came to the throne, where he served until his assassination a half-century later. By 1914, the three Balkan Wars had enabled Greece to enlarge its boundaries. A republic was established in 1923, but 12 years later, George II came back to the throne. In 1940, Greece withstood an attempt by Italy to take the country but Hitler assuaged Italy's humiliation by sending in his troops. German occupation of greece was completed by June 1941. They wreaked havoc on the country, including murdering the country's Jews. Bulgaria, with an eye on territory, joined Germany and colonized Macedonia. Resistance to Germany was manifest among both communists and anticommunists, who began to battle each other after Germany withdrew in 1944. Civil war erupted in 1946 and the communists were defeated, though this did not bring on political stability. Greece endured an astonishing sixteen governments between 1946 and 1952 until a new constitution was drafted that would secure the stability of the government. Greece joined NATO in 1951. King Constantine was deposed in a military coup in 1967. Though he tried to mount a counter-coup, it failed and he went into exile. From 1967 to 1974, a military junta ruled the country. The regime's failure to successfully intervene in Cyprus, which sparked the Turkish invasion of the island, led to the junta's collapse. A republic was established and a new constitution adopted in 1975. Greece was restored to full military membership in NATO in 1980 but shortly thereafter, the stridently anti-American, anti-EU, and anti-NATO government of Papandreou came to power. Papandreou and Greece were shaken and embarrassed when Palestinian terrorists conducted several attacks in the country. Papandreou's control of the country continued through the 1980s and into the 1990s until he resigned because of ill health in 1996. Economically, Greece still has a distance to go it failed to meet the EU criteria for taking part in the European Monetary Union in 1998 but is expected to try again in 2002. And the Cyprus situation still simmers between Turkey and Greece.

The cultural legacy of ancient Athens to the world is incalculable; to a great extent the references to the Greek heritage that abound in the culture of Western Europe are to Athenian civilization. Athens, named after its patron goddess Athena, was inhabited in the Bronze Age. Its citizens later proudly claimed that their ancestors had lived in the city even before the settlements of Attica were molded into a single state (according to legend, by Theseus
