I was one of the lucky employees chosen by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to travel to Central America. The annual trip enables a number of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' employees to travel to coffee-growing regions each year. There we learn first hand how coffee is grown and harvested. Coffee is the major export, followed by sugar and bananas. After getting myself settled, I met up with the rest of the Habitat for Humanity team (at right), 12 in all, including myself. Ranging in age from 29 to 77, we came from all over the United States and all sorts of vocations. Each of us had defined our own personal goals and reasons for going to Guatemala. Interestingly, I was the only "coffee" person. We had each raised just around $1,000 to donate to Habitat (plus airfare, spending money, etc.). Habitat for Humanity (yes, the Jimmy Carter group) concerns itself with providing the most basic of human needs, decent housing. Based in Americus, Georgia, Habitat will build its 1,000,000th home this year.

The successful CIA-orchestrated operation in 1954 to overthrow the Guatemalan ruler Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán, PBSUCCESS, resulted in long-term problems for the United States. The overthrow of the Arbenz regime led to Civil War in Guatemala, a war that lasted 36 years and created more than 100,000 casualties and 1,000,000 refugees. Despite countless mistakes made during the operation, the CIA believed the operation should be a model for future operations, a belief that led to disastrous results in Cuba seven years later. Operation PBSUCCESS resulted from the CIA's erroneous belief that the Soviets were using the democratically elected government of Guatemala as a communist beachhead into the Americas. America's role in overthrowing the Arbenz regime resulted in political condemnation worldwide, damaged the United States's reputation in Latin America, angered American allies, and drew criticism from the United Nations. A. Education The University of San Carlos of Guatemala, founded in 1676, is the national university, and tuition is free. But the university has suffered greatly from the political conflicts in the country and from insufficient resources. This has led to the founding of private institutions, including Rafael Landívar University (1961), run by the Catholic order of Jesuits; the Mariano Gálvez University (1966), with strong Protestant origins; the University of Del Valle (1966), closely connected with the American School of Guatemala; and Francisco Marroquín University (1971). All of these universities are located in the capital city, but several have branches in other cities. Guatemala City also has several smaller universities and colleges. B. Way of Life

HOME The Maya Today Mysteries of a lost civilization The Maya of central America reached remarkable intellectual and artistic heights during the Classic period of their great civilization, between around AD 250 and 900. They built huge temples and pyramids, inscribed stone monuments, made major advances in mathematics and astronomy, and developed complex hieroglyphic scripts. But in part of their lands, their great civilization was doomed to undergo a mysterious collapse that was to leave mighty temples and pyramids abandoned for centuries.... Tikal
During the Classic period of the Maya civilization, the great city of Tikal thrived in dense lowland jungle of what is now part of Guatemala. Buildings ranged from simple thatched-roofed homes to palaces and lofty pyramids topped by temples. In the ceremonial heart of Tikal are pyramids that include the highest known structure built in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. The population of Tikal may have reached more than 50,000, including the inhabitants of its peripheral and rural areas.
Temple I at Tikal - the Temple of the Great Jaguar - sits on a towering pyramid built over the tomb of King Hasaw Chan K'awil.

ISHS Acta Horticulturae 232: International Workshop on Apple Culture in the Tropics and Subtropics
APPLE CULTURE IN THE HIGHLANDS OF GUATEMALA
Authors:
WAYNE T. WILLIAMS, G. MENEGAZZO Abstract:
An estimated 2 500 ha of apples are grown in the Guatemalan highlands. The most common varieties are Jonathan, Wealthy (Juarez), Red Delicious, Winter Banana, Gloria Mundi and Anna. 23 varieties have been described to date, but many varieties from Spain and France remain unidentified, and there are many hybrids. The common rootstocks are MM106 and Criollo. Between 1985 and 1987, 47 new varieties were introduced with Mayaan, Dorsett Golden, Hawaii and Stark Spur Red Delicious being superior. The major limiting factor for quality production is the lack of orchard management. Little or no pruning is done, and fruit thinning is practically absent. Chemical disease control is commonly practiced. Fertilizer requirements are not fully understood, and there is a dirth of cold storage facilities. The infrastructure of collecting and storage centers and roads needs major improvement. There are several fine orchards however, with high quality fruit of heavy yields. The typical orchard consists of 20 to 100 trees, with plantings over a few hectares being rare. The lack of sufficient chilling hours over much of the highlands results in many trees having sparse foliage below terminal buds. There are several government nurseries for the production of grafted stock, but no certification program exists in the country.
