    Peoples, Geography and Languages
The Maya homeland, called Mesoamerica, spans five countries: Mexico Guatemala Belize Honduras , and El Salvador . There are now indications that the people we call the Maya had migrated from North America to the highlands of Guatemala perhaps as long ago as 2600 B.C., living an agricultural, village-based life. The culture of these Preclassic Maya owes much to the earlier civilization of the Olmec , which flourished ca. 1200 B.C.
By the time Maya civilization had reached its peak - the Classic period (A.D. 200-900) - the Maya were spread across an almost continuous territory of roughly 311,000 square kilometers (120,000 square miles), comprising three general areas:
    • The tropical rain forest of the lowlands, stretching from northwestern Honduras, through the region of Guatemala and into Belize and the Chiapas. This became the heart of Classic Maya civilization and included cities such as Palenque
    • The Guatemala highlands and the Pacific Coast, where Aztec influence in the early Classic period caused some differences in cultural development from the Central, or Lowlands, Maya.

The first member of my family to finish high school (Allan Glen's) and go on to university, I stuck close to home and daily crossed the river from Govan to Gilmorehill. At the University of Glasgow (1969-1973) I graduated with an M.A. in Regional and Systematic Geography, thereafter traversing the Atlantic, not the Clyde, to pursue my graduate education. Two degrees from the University of Alberta (M.A., 1975; Ph.D., 1980) convinced me that I might, after all, have a future career in education. Queen's University hired me in 1979 on a one-year, non-renewable position. I have remained at Queen's in various guises (postdoctoral fellow, tenure-track appointee, and now tenured professor) ever since.

Guatemala Guatemala is a small country covering only 108,889 Kms2. Its ten million inhabitants live mainly in the southern highlands that run parallel to the pacific coast. The Petén jungle lies to the north making up two thirds of the nation. At present, this region is sparsely populated but the jungle conceals the vestiges of the first cities that gave way to the Mayan culture. Guatemala is defined by an "indigenous presence". The highlands are populated by more than twenty ethnic groups that originated from the Maya. These people live in small rural villages and towns and make up more than 50% of the population of this small country. The rest of the inhabitants are mestizos, whites that descend from European settlers that arrived during the past four hundred fifty years, afro-Caribbean blacks and other race and cultural combinations that complete the complex social reality in Guatemala. The economy in Guatemala is based on the indigenous agricultural areas and the great sugarcane, coffee or cotton plantations belonging to influential landowners on the pacific coast. During this century a small industrial manufacturing sector that exports textiles and products for the Central American market has begun to grow.
