Guatemala: Government Guatemala's current constitution was adopted in 1985. It provides for a president, directly elected for a five-year term, who cannot be reelected. A 100-member unicameral legislature is also elected for a five-year term. The major political parties are the National Centrist Union (UCN), the Solidarity Action Movement (MAS), and the Christian Democratic party. The government is opposed by the leftist guerrilla movement known as the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Union (URNG). Guatemala is divided into 22 administrative departments.

During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war.
