Geography Whether you like vast expanses of clean white sand, quiet sheltered coves with mysterious rock pools or spectacular cliff walks, Guernsey's varied coastline has everything you could wish for. Inland there are quiet country lanes with flower-filled verges and charming granite cottages and farmhouses to explore. A mild climate and fertile soil help to keep the island green with vegetables and bright with flowers, many of which are shipped to markets of Great Britain. The three largest islands, Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney have long been famous as the homes of the fine breeds of cattle that bear their names. Guernsey also has several granite quarries.

    Who Are We?

These young men for the most part, settled on the Gaspé Coast and married local girls, establishing roots in Canada. Today, if one takes a look at any telephone directory it will be difficult to find one community which does not contain at least one Channel Island name. Likewise, other Channel Islanders came to work for Robin's in Nova Scotia and from there moved up to Cheticamp, NB and other areas on the Bay of Chaleur.
For many years there had been talk of founding a Gaspésian Channel Island Society. In 1988 four interested persons began the work on what is now the "Gaspésian Channel Islands Society" with over 300 members from across Canada, USA and overseas.
Membership cost only Trip 2000 Planning
Our "Channel Islands' Connection Room" at the Gaspésian British Heritage Centre in New Richmond, Québec, is dedicated to the collection of artifacts, documents and other information relative to the history of the early settlers from our Islands on the Gaspé Coast and is well worth a visit. The room will be moved to larger quarters as the collection grows. Anyone having articles to either lend or donate please contact Diane Sawyer. The genealogical section is growing rapidly and is available for research.
Our Annual General Meeting, held in either of July or August of each year, Includes: registration and get together presentations, photo collections of trips to the Islands, social evening, cocktail reception speeches and the Annual Meeting . Details in forthcoming issues of "Anglo-Normand". Come join us and make new friends, many out-of-towners attend the event.

Geography The Bailiwick of Guernsey includes the inhabited islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqou and Lihou. Guernsey itself is the second largest of the Channel Islands and is roughly triangular in shape. It is situated in the Gulf of St Malo 130 kilometres south of England and only 48 kilometres west of Normandy, France. The island has a land area of 65 sq. km. Guernsey rises in steps from a plateau in the north to ragged cliffs about 90 metres above sea level. It is drained mainly by northward-flowing streams into deeply-incised valleys. In the low-lying north, the soil is made up of blown sand, raised beach deposits and the fill of old lagoons. Guernsey enjoys a maritime climate; snow and severe frost are rare. Annual rainfall is between 75 and 90 centimetres, but water on the island is sometimes in short supply, being supplemented by seawater distillation.
