Grooming Small Pets
It is important that you get your small pet accustomed to grooming early in life by starting off with small, fun sessions when it is still young. You must also choose a method which will be fun for you and carry it out only when you have plenty of time. If you are stressed or rushed when grooming, your pet is also likely to get stressed. Grooming offers an ideal opportunity to also check the nails, teeth, ears and eyes, and to check for any lumps or scabs which may have developed since last time. Grooming Hamsters These small mammals wash themselves almost in the same way as cats do. They do not need to be bathed at all. Long-haired breeds may need to have the shavings of their bedding removed from their coat, but this can be done using your fingers or a light brush. An old toothbrush is a good brush to use. Some hamsters will enjoy using a sand bath. This is a special bowl of refined sand which your hamster will roll around in to clean himself, much the same way as chinchillas do.

Scientific name:
Cavia porcellus
Size: Males can weigh up to three pounds, but females are smaller, usually just under a pound.
Color: Lots of variations, from brown spotted and black banded to pure golden and all-white.
Lifespan: Five to seven years
If your pig's no porker, then what is she? A guinea pig is a rodent, just like mice, rats and hamsters. She has short legs and a plump body, and a tummy that's so big her back legs have to point sideways to fit around it! It's not that she's overweightlike all guinea pigs, she needs a big stomach to digest all the tough plant food she eats. The three most common breeds of guinea pig are the smooth-coated, who has short, glossy fur; the Abyssinian, whose hair grows in fluffy tufts all over her body; and the Peruvian, who has long, silky hair that flows to the ground. Guinea pigs are social, and if you keep two or more females together, they'll become great friends. If you want two males, choose two babies from the same litterbut don't put more than two males in the same cage or they'll fight. And if you keep males and females together, have your veterinarian neuter the males and spay the females so they can't have babies.

Guinea Pig Care Sheet
Physical Description Guinea pigs are not really pigs but belong to a group of rodents called cavies. They are small stocky animals with short legs and short necks. This design keeps their mouths close to the ground for eating grass. Guinea pigs come in a variety of colors and can have from one color to five or more. Their hair can be short and wavy to long and flowing. Adults weigh up to 3 pounds and live an average of 4-7 years. Behavior Guinea pigs are usually very quiet animals. When scared, threatened, or nervous they will hide in the closest safe place (i.e. an enclosed tube, box, etc.). Guinea pigs will communicate with squeaks or whistles, showing distress or contentment according to the volume. Their teeth are constantly growing and they will spend lots of time gnawing on things. If they cannot keep their teeth worn down, they will become overgrown and may need veterinary attention. Guinea pigs almost never bite unless mishandled, irritated or taste something on the handler.

Guinea Pigs as Pets
The term guinea pig is a misnomer, these animals are neither from Guinea, nor are they pigs! Their original home was in Peru; the first Spanish sailors who landed in Peru about four hundred years ago found these animals being kept as pets by the Incas. Guinea pigs belong to the family of gnawing animals, they have sharp and long front teeth which keep growing throughout their life time and have to be kept short by ….you guessed it, constant gnawing (on food)! Don't worry about being bitten by them though; they are generally non-aggressive creatures. They are relatively small in size and weigh about 2 pounds when mature. Their average life span is 5 years although some have known to live for 7-10 years.
Guinea pigs come in basically three varieties: short haired, rough haired and longhaired. They come in a multitude of colours - sometimes all black, brown or white, or even two colours with white.
Keeping Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs can be kept in wire cages, but make sure that the bottom of the cage is solid or lined with thick sheets of newspaper, otherwise their feet get caught in the wire meshing. Each guinea pig will need about 2 square feet of floor space; so depending on the number of guinea pigs you wish to keep you can choose the size of the cage.

Books 6th Happiness About Rodentry Available Guinea Pigs Cavia porcellus Guinea Pigs are native to South America, where they were raised not for pets, but for food, folk medicine and native religions . The Spanish coquerors who invaded the continent brought the animals back to Europe in the middle of the 16th century. In England, they became popular after the 18th century; In fact, it was not uncommon for Ladies of the Court to have a servant carry their pet guinea pigs alongside them on a silken pillow when the were in public. In the early 20th century in the USA, peopel began to show cavies, just as they show rabbits, cats or fancy rats. There were only 3 recognized breeds back then- the English (American), Abyssian and Angora (longhaired; also sometimes called Peruvian at the time). It wasn't until the 1960's that new breeds were actively developed, shown and standardized, such as theWhite Crested, Coronet, Teddy and Texel among many others. Cavies are ideal indoor pets for many people. They take up relatively a small amount space and are often acceptable pets for urban dwelling- landlords often accept small caged pets such as guinea pigs when cats or dogs may be prohibitted. The guinea pig is a gentle animal that rarely bites. While generally considered quiet animals, the do make a number of sounds, such as chirps, whistles, and squeels, which many people find pleasing. There are many coat textures and colours to choose from. Care of the guinea pig is not difficult- they require a quality vitamin-enriched pellet food, hay, fresh greens and vegitables and occassional fruit for treats.

Each breeding pair is carefully chosen for their wonderful pet temperments, sturdy health and unique appearance. Each litter is raised in our living room so they receive daily attention and socializing. They are fed a variety of hays and delicious organic produce, have lots of toys and receive lots of attention which make them well socialized to family life. I chose this breed and variety because I wanted to work on a standardized, recognized pure bred breed which I can register and show.

How to Care for Guinea Pigs
Illustrations by Susie Duckworth A descendant of the wild guinea pigs of South America, today's domesticated guinea pig is viewed by many as an "easy" pet for children. Soon enough, parents and children discover that this new companion animal requires substantially more care than the child's favorite stuffed toy. You know what often happens next: The guinea pig is brought to your shelter, in need of special attention because his owners failed to give him proper care. You will need to provide that for him until he can be placed with responsible adopters who can meet his needs. Like rabbits, ferrets, and other small domesticated mammals, guinea pigs require an environment and treatment distinct from dogs and cats. By modifying what you already have in your shelter, adding a few extras, and following the steps below, you can help guinea pigs feel comfortable in your facility. 1: Make Room at the Inn
Ideally, guinea pigs should be kept with other small mammals in a room away from cats and dogs. If your shelter lacks a separate space, you can house guinea pigs in the cat room, but set up your caging so they do not have to face cats. Whatever room you use, maintain the temperature at 65-75 degrees to minimize the risk of respiratory disease. They may be small, but guinea pigs require ample space to move about. Make sure their living quarters are at least 18 inches wide, 14 inches high, and 25 inches deep. Even though their stay with you will be temporary, guinea pigs housed in larger cages are more likely to be active, and thus more likely to attract prospective adopters. Traditional stainless-steel cat cages will work; aquariums, however, provide poor ventilation, and mesh or wire-floor cages hurt guinea pigs' tender feet.

Guinea Pigs Guinea pigs are hystricomorph rodents (related to chinchillas and porcupines) that originated from the Andes Mountains region of South America. They were probably first domesticated by the Indians of Peru, who used them for food and as sacrificial offerings to their gods. In the 16th century Dutch explorers introduced guinea pigs to Europe, and selective breeding and captive rearing began in earnest. Guinea pigs are very popular pets because of their availability, docile temperaments, tendency not to bite or scratch when handled, and relatively clean habits. They are not long-lived, which can be disconcerting to owners (especially children). Many parents, however, believe that having their children experience the relatively short period of companionship and subsequent death is a meaningful way to expose children to the "ups and downs" of life. http://www.btinternet.com/~grumster/html/body_guinea_pigs.html
Guinea Pigs have to be one of the easiest of all pets to keep Guinea pigs are communal animals and should never be kept alone—they do need company. A solitary pig is a very sad and lonely pig. Females will readily accept other females at any age but adult males will not usually tolerate other adult males, however an adult male will often accept a baby male.
Rabbits can be kept with guinea pigs but an un-neutered buck rabbit is not advisable as it will often try to mate with the guinea pig and can cause serious injury or even death. Occasionally a female rabbit can be spiteful and nip the guinea pig causing sores at the rear end so keep an eye on them for a while until you are sure that the rabbit has accepted the pig. If you notice sores appear on your pig then immediately separate them . Handling is of paramount importance with guinea pigs as they are by nature nervous creatures. Handled daily they soon become accustomed to human contact and are less likely to run away every time you approach them. Guinea Pigs You can litter train your bunny Click here to find out how!

Here is what you must provide for your pet: Food All animals need to be fed the correct food. Cats cannot eat dog food, nor can guinea pigs eat rabbit pellets or birds live on seeds alone. Generally, if your pets are young and active they need high energy food. When they get older and slow down they need food that has less fat. Water Give your pet plenty of fresh water. While there are many different types of animals, one thing they have in common is that they all require fresh water. Change the water every day and wash the water container regularly. Shelter Shelters should keep your pet warm, dry and safe. Dogs need a weatherproof dog house, rabbits and guinea pigs need a shelter box and cats like the safety of your whole house. Small animals such as mice need nesting boxes in their homes. Exercise Keep your pet fit. Plenty of exercise will keep your pet happy and healthy. Walk your dog twice a day. If you have a rabbit make a special exercise area or buy a harness and go for walks.
