The guinea pig (or cavy) is a member of the rodent family with an average life span of 4 to 7 years. These sociable, somewhat skittish creatures are easy to care for, seldom bite and are exceptionally clean. Wild guinea pigs are a prey species and their domestic counterparts retain a desire to run for cover when startled or threatened and so it is necessary to provide a shelter in their cage where they can seek safety. Since they do not climb they are easy to contain in a habitat and are easily located should they run free. Guinea pigs must chew to wear down their constantly-growing front teeth, so you need to provide chew items such as apple, birch or willow branches, dried (whole grain) bread crusts, hay and/or firm vegetables such as carrots and broccoli stems. Guinea pigs are social animals, so it is best if they live in pairs. Usually sows (females) cohabit well as either siblings or mother-daughter pairs. Boars (males) will sometimes get along but they often do not unless raised together. Boars should not be placed with sows under any circumstances even for a short period. Please do not breed guinea pigs. It is more difficult than you might think to find good, long term homes for the offspring. It is possible to have guinea pigs neutered but there is some risk involved – consult a veterinarian specializing in small animals.

These cuties are generally good natured and fairly low maintenance. Keep Your Cool! The ideal Temperature for the Guinea Pig is 75°. Higher temperatures can lead to heat stroke. Nutrition Guinea Pigs must have adequate amounts of Vitamin C in their diets since their bodies are not capable of synthesizing the vitamin internally (sort of like the way humans can’t absorb calcium without vitamin D – that’s why they add it to milk). Most commercial Guinea Pig food pellets satisfy this requirement, but make sure it’s fresh. The vitamin levels in this type of form begin to lose potency after just six weeks. Adding fruit and vegetables to you pet’s diet for good measure is recommend to insure proper nutrition and will make it more tastier too). Food and water should be kept off the floor for sanitary reasons. A water bottle and hanging food tray is recommended. Change daily. Housing Housing should be at least 18 inches high, with 2 square feet of space for each pet. A glass aquarium with a screen cover, lined with wood chips or commercial bedding, is fine. If you choose a wire cage, provide a smooth floor surface made of metal or plastic sheeting. The wire netting can be rough on his feet. A small amount of hay for him to burrow in will make him a happypet. I also recommend installing a ramp or ledge made of plastic or metal ( wood is difficult to clean) for him to climb on, and hide under. The cage should be thoroughly cleaned and bedding changed weekly.

The boy was almost six, and she thought the guinea pig would help his "learn responsibility." The mother said she really wanted a dog but was going to "start small, with something that will not take a lot of time." I cried inside for whatever guinea pig would end up in this household (The Home would not adopt to them). A living being should not be an educational toy. How, then, to teach responsibility? Teaching by Example The almost six-year-old boy should be told, "You can't have a pet until you can take care of one. That means not only feeding and cleaning and attention, but money and a car for vet trips, and a place where the animal can live with you for the natural length of her life. But - doesn't that rule out teenagers too, and most college students? Yes, it does. Only adults (and not all of them) are qualified to have pets. Getting a pet "for" a child is a misallotment of responsibility that can have dire consequences for the pet. A sad scene, for example, which I have seen several times goes like this: A mother brings a cat to a shelter, explaining, "My daughter is grown now; she left her cat. I'm tired of him. The middle-aged cat’s chances of adoption are slim. Who really is to blame here? The mother allowed the cat in the home knowing his life expectancy. The responsibility for the cat was hoisted on the daughter when she was in no position to take it.

Most classroom guinea pigs, alas, do NOT have appropriate care; but it is not theoretically impossible for a classroom to be a suitable place for a guinea pig. Here are the questions to ask (and a key to the ideal answers). A Test For Animals in the Classroom What is the temperature in the room? Guinea pigs require at least 70 degrees, INCLUDING OVERNIGHT, and must have no drafts. 2. Who will take care of the guinea pig on weekends? The guinea pig should NEVER be left alone, and a janitor feeding the animal once or twice over the weekend is not sufficient care either. The pet needs to go to a home, THE SAME ONE EACH WEEKEND, where he will receive love, attention, and vet care in case of emergency (which would not be noted if he were alone in the empty school). 3. Where will the pet go in the summer? A permanent home should be arranged before obtaining the guinea pig. 4. What housing and food will the guinea pig have? Is money available for vet care if needed? A guinea pig can be dumped at a number of places, including pet stores. What all guinea pig dumps have in common is irresponsible pet ownership. The Great Outdoors The worst kind of dump is letting a guinea pig "go" outdoors. The usual thinking is that the animal has a chance to survive on its own, whereas a shelter will just put it down. WRONG. It is a guaranteed death sentence and one that is extremely horrible for the animal to suffer, no matter what happensdying by being killed by any number of predators, or dying from starvation or dehydration or the elements.
