THE PETROLEUM POTENTIAL OF FIJI
Author : Jonathan A. Rodd TABLE OF CONTENTS SUMMARY HISTORY OF EXPLORATION GEOLOGY Regional Tectonic Setting ... Entire Document SUMMARY Fiji forms part of the South-West Pacific island arc system which marks the boundary between the Indo-Australia and Pacific plates. The territorial waters cover almost 1.3 million km² and contain two shallow-water Tertiary sedimentary basins. Bligh Water Basin, covering some 9500 km², has sediment thicknesses in excess of 5km and has excellent potential for hydrocarbons. Bau Waters Basin is also prospective, having a shallow-water area of about 1600km², with sediment thicknesses up to 4km. Fiji lies on the same regional play trend of Miocene reefs which produce oil in Irian Jaya, Indonesia and gas/condensate in offshore Papua New Guinea. Indeed Fiji's basins have many similarities with the oil and gas producing, arc-related basins of Southeast Asia. Source rocks of Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene age are exposed onshore in Fiji and have been encountered by drilling in the offshore basins. An oil seep in Bligh Water Basin and oil and gas shows in wells provide evidence that hydrocarbons have been generated in the basins. Modelling studies indicate peak oil generation to be at about 2.6km below sea floor.

Working Bibliography

Keeping A Research Journal
    Research Papers: Working Bibliography
A working bibliography should be started at the outset of your investigation. It has a few functions:
It tells you if there are insufficient, adequate, or overabundant amounts of information on your topic.
It gets you organized and points a direction for you to start researching. It helps you to get down to work.
If you compile your bibliography on index cards, you will have more flexibility in alphabetizing and adding and deleting sources. Your bibliography should always be undergoing change as your research progresses.
Keep a separate card for each source you consult. Be sure to include all of the relevant publication information for each of your sources. A few examples taken from Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations , (Chicago: Fifth Edition, 1987) follow. These are only the most common types of sources you will need to cite; you will surely need to consult Turabian or another style manual for others. Note that the way to cite a source in a bibliography if different than the way to cite a source in a footnote.

Doctor David Denholm (1924-1997) David Denholm was born in Maryborough, Queensland, in 1924. Thanks to a good teacher at his one teacher school, he won a scholarship to Brisbane Church of England Grammar School, where he passed his junior certificate. The failure of his widowed mother's business forced his withdrawal from school before he completed his senior certificate, but thanks to his junior certificate he was immediately employed by the Queensland Public Service in the Department of Public Instruction, where he remained until 1942, when he was called up for war service. With the 58/59 battalion he fought in New Guinea and on Bougainville, returning at the war's end to the Public Service in Brisbane. From there he transferred to the Commonwealth Bank, learned Russian at night classes, and got involved with the Brisbane Realist Writers' Group and the Fellowship of Australian Writers. Under the nom de plume of David Forrest, he wrote numerous short stories and two novels, The Last Blue Sea (1959), which won the first Dame Mary Gilmore Award, and

JEWS IN CAPE VERDE AND ON THE
GUINEA COAST
by Richard Lobban
Paper presented at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth
11 February 1996
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND IN PORTUGAL
In Iberia the Reconquista movement was growing in its mission to recover their lands from the Muslim Moors who had first arrived in the 8th century. Jews may have first arrived far earlier during the time of the Phonecians and Roman. Nevertheless, Maghrebi Jews were key allies of the Moors and centuries-long residents of Iberia. Probably as early as 1480 one may find the beginnings of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion of Jews. It was however in 1492 the the Spanish Inquisition emerged in its fullest expression of intolerance, anti-Semitism. This social pathology quickly spread to neighboring Portugal where Portuguese Kings Joao II and especially Manuel I in 1496, determined to exile thousands of Jews to Sao Tome, Principe, and Cape Verde. The numbers expelled at this time were so great that the term Portuguese" almost implied those of Jewish origin. Those who were not expelled were converted by force or were even executed.
Despite the important role of Portuguese Jews in commerce, navigational sciences, and in the cartography of Africa, they faced riots, pogroms, and profound oppression during the

Stormy Weather: A History of Research in the Bureau of Meteorology Foreword In 1994, Dr John Zillman, Commonwealth Director of Meteorology, passed me a copy of an M.Sc thesis by John Gardner on the history of research in the Bureau of Meteorology. John Gardner was born in Sydney in 1949, attended school in Sydney, Herberton (Qld) and Launceston before joining the Department of Immigration in 1968. He joined the Hobart Regional Office of the Bureau of Meteorology in 1969 as a Weather Assistant and then was one of the first trainee Observers to undertake a new year-long course in surface and upper air observations. After completing the course, during which he spent the Christmas break working in the Bureau's Darwin Regional Office, John worked in Perth, Forrest and New Guinea, with periods working in Port Moresby, Rabaul and Momote (as Officer-in-Charge). At the end of his stint in New Guinea he was transferred to Darwin where he commenced work on a Bachelor of Economics degree with the external studies section of the University of Queensland. During his duty at Darwin, John experienced the drama of Cyclone Tracy and remained at Darwin until he was transferred to Hobart Airport, where he moved with his spouse Juliet in 1976.
