DOS20577: EXPLORATION EVALUATION OF OFFSHORE GUINEA BISSAU (FIRST BIDDING ROUND) Updated: 02 Mar 2000 INTRODUCTION The offshore area under study was subdivided into six license blocks (Figure 1). Originally, these were to be offered for competitive bidding on March 15, 1982. However, this bid deadline has changed several times due to delays in completing their exploration evaluation and in formulating a petroleum law/model contract.. The bid deadline is presently considered to be early 1983, but no firm date has yet been announced. To prepare an independent exploration assessment of this area, EP purchased the exploration data package which contained 4,000 line kilometers of Digicon (1981) seismic data, 5,000 line kilometers of reprocessed Esso seismic data, onshore/offshore well data and miscellaneous exploration data (including geochemistry). Asia-Pacific Regional Press Freedom Seminar Country Report - Papua New Guinea The Papua New Guinea Media Council of comprised of nine members, six are media outlets and three are media and advertising agencies. The current President is Mr. Peter John Aitsi, General Manager of PNGFM - a commercial radio station. He is continuing the the good work initiated by the two former Presidents. The Media Council was originally set up to protect the interest of the media organizations, it was as a vehicle to share information about possible "bad accounts". Over the years the focus of the Council has widened significantly to address aspects of improving the performance of the media as a whole. This focus has taken the form of industry wide training courses, and the uniformity of approach by the media houses in tackling common goals. The Media Council Board is made up of members of the various media organizations, and has established a specific working committee that concentrates on identify and facilitating training opportunities for the people within the industry. The training courses developed and made available to University Students, the general public and other interested groups that may wish to take part. The long-term focus of the Council is to continue to encourage and develop the professionalism within the industry by the media houses and the people that choose media as a career. The principal is to develop better quality performance by our people and our organisations to ensure the interests of the People of Papua New Guinea are protected by a responsible, active, free media.

Annual Report Annual Report Yaoundé, regional delegation (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe) Introduction Chad Equatorial Guinea Gabon Introduction In addition to its specific activities in Chad, the regional delegation concentrated on furthering cooperation with the Red Cross Societies of the region and provided expertise and financial assistance to the National Societies of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon for their emergency preparedness, hygiene and sanitation, tracing and dissemination programmes. Tracing activities for Chadian and Sudanese refugees were carried out with the assistance of the National Societies of Cameroon, the Central African Republic and Chad. As regards medical activities, the ICRC continued to fit war amputees with artificial limbs, while training programmes to convert to polypropylene technology were successfully completed at the prosthetic/orthotic centres in N'Djamena and Yaoundé. Chad After several decades of armed conflict, Chad's political and economic problems did not improve in 1995. The government attempted to assert its authority by once again rescheduling democratic elections, while militarized political opposition movements consolidated their position. Violent confrontations between the government and the opposition occurred throughout the year, making negotiation impossible. At the same time, large quantities of arms flooding through the country made widespread banditry a serious problem. In view of the prevailing instability, the ICRC maintained its emergency medical stocks in N'Djamena.

Annual Report Annual Report Yaounde, regional delegation (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe) Introduction The regional delegation concentrated on the promotion of humanitarian law, especially by approaching the governments of the region and requesting that they each designate an official representative of the armed forces or the Ministry of Defence to be responsible for the incorporation of humanitarian law in military training programmes. The regional delegation held a course on humanitarian law for instructors from the armed forces of 10 Central African countries (Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Zaire) from 22 to 25 March. Cooperation with the region's National Societies was also high on the regional delegation's agenda, especially as regards the establishment of emergency brigades to provide direct assistance to the population in the event of unrest. The ICRC also cooperated with these National Societies in the fields of information (the production and promotion of periodicals and radio programmes), training, first aid, and community activities such as projects aimed at improving hygiene and neighbourhood clean-up operations. A meeting of leaders of the National Societies of the six countries covered by the delegation was held in Yaoundé in early October to discuss such cooperation programmes, among other matters.

Operations came to an unexpected halt when the Auster crashed in the Asaroka Gap due to bad weather. The pilot Harry Hartwig died on impact. Despite this tragedy, the faith and determination of the supporters of MAF overcame the setback to ensure the aviation service continued in PNG. As a result, the network of MAF bases and routes has expanded across PNG serving several hundred remote communities. Initially, MAF flights predominantly supported expatriate missionaries in Papua New Guinea. With subsequent nationalisation of their positions, the missionary population rightly decreased. MAF now serves those who continue that work, including pastors, teachers, community development workers and medical staff, as well as the wider community. MAF flies for churches, missions and Christian organisations at a subsidised rate. We also work alongside the church to further the gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition we maintain a Christian witness while supporting local communities, many of whom rely on our aircraft as their primary means of transport.

Guinea-Bissau Time and Date Guinea-Bissau History Back to Top The early history of Guinea-Bissau is obscure, but some of the major ethnic groups of the country, such as the Balante and Pepel, were apparently established there by the 12th century. The area was visited in 1446 by Nuno Tristão, a Portuguese slave trader, and became an important slave center. A Portuguese post was established at Bissau in 1687, but the Portuguese claim was disputed by the French and the British, and in 1792 the latter briefly had a settlement at Bolama. In 1879 the region was constituted a Portuguese colony, and border disputes with the French were settled by treaty in 1886. Not until 1915, however, were the Portuguese able to exercise effective control over the country. For more than a thousand years the coast of Guinea-Bissau has been occupied by iron-using agriculturists. They were particularly skilled in the production of irrigated and dry rice and were suppliers of marine salt to adjacent areas of the western Sudan. From the 13th century coastal farmers came increasingly into contact with the outside world, first from the landward side and later from the seaward portion.
