Previous Page Next Page The euphoria caused by the drawing down of the Cold War was dramatically overshadowed by the August 2, 1990, invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Iraqi control of Kuwait and the danger it posed to Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf states threatened a vital U.S. interest, because the United States, and the West in general, remained dependent on this region for much of its oil supplies. President Bush strongly condemned the Iraqi action and called for Iraq's immediate and unconditional withdrawal. An emergency session of the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to condemn Iraq, urge a cease-fire and demand the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Later in August, Iraq announced the annexation of Kuwait, ordered the closing of all embassies in that country, and began taking U.S. and British citizens in Kuwait hostage. On August 8, President Bush went on national television to announce the deployment of U.S. troops to the Middle East. The president then worked to assemble one of the most extraordinary military and political coalitions of modern times, with military forces from Asia, Europe and Africa, as well as the Middle East. In the days and weeks following the invasion, the U.N. Security Council passed 12 resolutions condemning the Iraqi invasion and imposing wide-ranging economic sanctions on Iraq. The 12th resolution, issued on November 29, approved the use of force by U.N. member states if Iraq did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. The new U.S.-Soviet relationship provided the necessary condition for the U.N. action to stem the Iraqi invasion. Without the new entente between the two countries, the United Nations would never have authorized military action against Iraq.

Gulf War
The Gulf War was perhaps the most efficient war in American History, at least when considering the cost in American lives. It proved that U.S. technology and U.S. military doctrine is a potent force when applied to the world stage. Years after the war's end there are disagreements about whether the U.S. was justified in waging war against Iraq and over whether the war was prosecuted far enough. Beyond answering these questions, this site is dedicated to recounting a brief history of the war. Iraq Invades Kuwait - Sanctions Imposed back to top The economic sanctions on Iraq were imposed by the United Nations on the August 6th, 1990, following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Their stated purpose was to "bring the invasion and occupation of Kuwait by Iraq to an end." In their original form sanctions prohibited all imports to Iraq except medical goods and all exports from Iraq (oil in particular).
The Gulf War back to top On January 16, 1991 the United States launched a 43-day air and ground war on Iraq to force Iraqi forces out of Kuwait. The war was presented as a strategic war against the military machine of Saddam Hussein, but evidence on the ground, declassified reports, and comments by policymakers and participants in the war suggests a campaign much broader in its intent. "Amid mounting evidence of Iraq's ruined infrastructure and the painful consequences for ordinary Iraqis, Pentagon officials more readily acknowledge the severe impact of the 43-day air bombardment on Iraq's economic future and civilian population. Their explanations these days of the bombing's goals and methods suggest that the allies, relying on traditional concepts of strategic warfare, sought to achieve some of their military objectives in the Persian Gulf War by disabling Iraqi society at large. "Though many details remain classified, interviews with those involved in the targeting disclose three main contrasts with the administration's earlier portrayal of a campaign aimed solely at Iraq's armed forces and their lines of supply and command. Some targets, especially late in the war, were bombed primarily to create postwar leverage over Iraq, not to influence the course of the conflict itself. Planners now say their intent was to destroy or damage valuable facilities that Baghdad could not repair without foreign assistance.

The Gulf War 1991 Iraq has laid claims to Kuwait, a small oil-rich state in the Persian Gulf, ever since its creation in the late 1950s, when Britain granted it independence. Mounting war debts incurred by an internecine war with neighbouring Iran, the falling world price of oil, and the arguable provocation of a build-up of American troops in Saudi Arabia, led Iraq to invade and annex Kuwait on 2 August 1990. A coalition of 28 nations, led by the USA and including Britain, France and Egypt, embarked upon an air offensive lasting six weeks. During a 100-hour ground war the 200,000 strong Iraqi army holding Kuwait was driven back. The conflict was to create between two and three million refugees and resulted in severe environmental damage as the retreating Iraqi army blew up oil wells and allowed them to burn, and oil spills affected large areas of the region. Despite the result, the conflict (like the Falklands before) is a further example of Britain 'punching above her weight' in international politics due to belligerent governments, heavy reliance on US foreign policy decisions and her nuclear capability.

    Vietnam: The Necessary War
    by Michael Lind
This original and provocative book is certain to raise emotions. Its justification of America's war in Southeast Asia directly contradicts other recent studies. Viewing America's Southeast Asian adventure in the context of the cold war, Lind regards it not as a crime, betrayal, or tragic error, but as an unavoidable confrontation. Whether you agree with his arguments, Vietnam: The Necessary War intelligently, often vehemently, challenges preconceptions that surround the most controversial military conflict in American history.

    Japanese Dive-bombers - the D3A and D4Y
    Aichi D3A 'Val'

The Aichi D3A - Allied reporting-name 'Val' - was the standard Japanese carrier-based dive-bomber during the opening stages of the Pacific War, operating with great effect in the Pearl Harbor attack and in the great carrier battles of 1942, but also suffering heavy losses in those battles. Despite its importance in these engagements the D3A was produced in only relatively small numbers - 478 of the D3A1 and 816 of the more streamlined D3A2. The Yokosuka D4Y Suisei ('Comet') - Allied reporting-name 'Judy' - was the D3A's replacement, and by late 1944 relatively few Vals were left in service. The D4Y had been designed to a demanding specification of 1937, which called for a two-seat dive-bomber as fast as the A6M Zero-Sen fighter. It was one of the few Japanese aircraft to go into production with a liquid-cooled engine. The supposedly lower drag of the in-line motor was one means of meeting the demand for high speed, but the Daimler-Benz 601 had an unsuccessful history in Japanese service. In 1943 the main problems with the Judy were eliminated by replacing the 601 with the reliable and smooth-running Kinsei 62 radial. After the Battle for Leyte Gulf battle the D4Y was extensively employed as a kamikaze aircraft carrying 800 kg (1,764 lb) of explosives. Total production of the Judy was 2,038.

This is the same site where the CIA deleted a bunch of documents in an attempt to reclassify them. Patrick Eddington, former CIA analyst , together with his wife, also a former CIA analyst, quit the CIA when they found that the veterans were not being given the full truth about what was known about the probabilities and effects of exposure to chemical and biological agents during the Gulf War. Quoting from an AP story that ran in Newsday, 10-31-1996, pp A18: Washington - Records of U.S. military units deployed in the Persian Gulf war contain abundant evidence of exposure to Iraqi chemical weapons, a former CIA analyst said yesterday. He accused the Pentagon and CIA of engaging in "a pattern of deception and denial." "There's no way you can even begin to get a complete picture of what happened over there unless and until they declassify every single unit log," said Patrick Eddington, who resigned from the CIA earlier this year. During the 1991 gulf war, Eddington analyzed satellite photos of Iraqi troop movements. Later, he and his wife, Robin, also a CIA analyst, began collecting information about the possible use of chemical weapons during that conflict. Robin Eddington also resigned from the CIA this year. ...

Human and Ecological Consequences of the Gulf War's Environmental Damages in Kuwait United Nations Compensation Commission Geneva, January 25, 2000 by Bertrand Charrier Green Cross International Seven years after the Gulf War, it was time to reassess the environmental situation of Kuwait, its patterns of recovery and examine the long-term effects that remain. The environmental assessment produced by Green Cross includes two parts. The first is a study led by a group of scientists/environmental experts and the second is a 26 minutes film-documentary. SUMMARY The environmental damage resulting from the invasion and the subsequent war has affected all ecosystems, as well as human health. Thousands of people still suffer deep psychological disorders - including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which prevents people from returning to a normal life. The oil contamination of the terrestrial ecosystems reached levels on a scale unprecedented in the history of the planet. The impacts on the environment will take decades to partially disappear and their full effects may never be known. Experts from Green Cross discovered that one fresh groundwater aquifer, representing 40% of the fresh water reserves of Kuwait, is heavily contaminated, and the remaining strategic freshwater reserves provide Kuwait with less than a two-month supply for the entire population!
