    Subject Gulf War Posted by 1CAVCCO15MED Posted on 6/6/00 11:04 AM The day the local Reserve units came home from Saudi there was a big parade that went right in front of where I worked. All day people asked me if I would be going out to welcome them back. I kept saying, " No, I'm exempt." I was plainly resenting the treatment these people were receiving compared to what I got. But when it came time I was out there with the rest of them and I was so glad I was. I could see the pain in their eyes and realized we are all the same. They were more grateful for the Vietnam guys being there than anyone. David Joined: Aug 21, 2001 Posts: 87 From: San Diego, CA. Thank you to all of the Vietnam veterans who served and to all those same veterans who came to cheer us as we made it back home. You as well as the veterans still with us from other conflicts, will always have the highest place of honor in my heart. Joined: Aug 28, 2001

    by Roger J. Spiller
    American tanks advance through the Saudi desert on January 8, 1991, a week before the air offensive against Iraq began. In the decade since, these events have had as much difficulty finding a name as Hussein had in finding a justification for them. We have "The Persian Gulf Conflict" or "The Gulf Conflict." For those who wish to emphasize the conflict’s significance, nothing less than "The Persian Gulf War" or "The Gulf War" will do. If one grants, for the sake of argument, that what happened was indeed a war, even if not officially declared by virtue of Constitution and Congress, one must admit that 10 years later there is some confusion about the shape of the thing. Seen in historical terms only, the Persian Gulf War seems to belong with grand old-fashioned imperial enterprises, a cracking good punitive expedition. Wars presumably have beginnings, middles, and ends. Only the middle of this one seems clear. Every few days, we have news of another air strike against some Iraqi target; in between the strikes, allied warplanes enforce a "no-fly zone" over nearly two-thirds of Iraq. U.N. inspection teams whose mission was to oversee the destruction of certain Iraqi "weapons of mass destruction" are no longer permitted in Iraq. What remains of the U.N.’s sanctions against Iraq may be charitably characterized as being in disarray. Those who like their history neat, who insist on closure, have been disappointed.

    History War fought between Iraq and allies of Kuwait , from January 16 to February 28, 1991, lasting 44 days altogether. The war had 3 main phases: 1) Iraq's occupation of Kuwait, 2) The diplomatic game and sanctions against Iraq, 3) The allied war against Iraq. The war was more than any war before fought on two very different fronts: in addition to the war field, it was fought in the medias. The media war was at first staged by Iraq and Kuwait. While Kuwait hired the best media advisors to present their case, in order to secure the support of the international audience, both the common man and the politicians, Iraq relied on its own outdated media personnel. Iraq's presentations of Saddam Hussein patting intimidated Iraqi infants, will forever remain among the more comic moments in the history of international politics. Iraqi troops October 1990 Allied ground campaign January 24- 28, 1991:

    75. Frontline: The Gulf War: Oral History: Rick Atkinson
    Q Does the gulf war in fact, represent the dying of the old world order? Therewas no new world order that came out of the Persian gulf war.
    http://www2.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gulf/oral/atkinson/4.html
    var loc = "../../../";
    (continued)
    Q: Could you explain Schwarzkopf's skepticism about U.S. Special Forces? Atkinson : There was a belief [that] Schwarzkopf distrusted Special Forces in general, sharing the conventional skepticism that many conventional soldiers had toward Special Forces. I don't think that's really true. I think he was just concerned that he keep them in check.
    Q: What were the difficulties facing the military in finding the mobile SCUD launchers? Atkinson: Well, Schwarzkopf and his planners knew that there were some 30 fixed sites that the Iraqis had prepared to shoot SCUDS. The difficulty was that the Iraqis never once used those fixed sites, these launching pads. Instead they used mobile trucks that hauled the SCUDS around, could set up in a matter of minutes, fire in a matter of minutes, take off again. We're talking about an area of western Iraq, which was the size basically of Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts put together, a pretty substantial chunk of territory. Trying to find those trucks out in a piece of territory that that's big at night, when you're prohibited basically from putting troops on the ground and you're relying on pilots flying at 500 knots overhead, simply proved to be impossible.
    Q: Tell me about struggle inside the bunker in Riyadh, about the shape of the air war, and where the bombs should be dropped.

    76. Frontline: The Gulf War: Oral History: Norman Schwarzkopf
    Schwarzkopf During this war we probably had the finest intelligencesupport that any commander has ever had in the history of warfare.
    http://www2.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gulf/oral/schwarzkopf/4.html
    var loc = "../../../";
    (continued)
    Q: With regard to the scuds, there was a remark you made.... Schwarzkopf: The remark I made has been incorrectly quoted. It's been attributed to me that I said that "... I was in more danger in a lightning storm in southern Georgia, than I was in the scud attack in Tel Aviv." That is absolutely incorrect. What I said is I was under more danger from a lightning attack in southern Georgia than I would have been in the streets of Saudi Arabia ...... it was not Tel Aviv at all. But the point was that the scud was purely a random act, a missile that was launched in the air, it was not aimed, there was no guidance system to it whatsoever, it kind of fell to earth and, and where it happened to land was a question of fate... more than it was a deliberate blow. Unfortunately if you've ever been in southern Georgia on the beaches in a lightning storm, if you're out there you're in great great danger, and you can be killed very very quickly. Uder a scud attack quite frankly,and if it weren't for that one unfortunate incident where the warhead fell on one of our sleeping quarters-the casualties from the scud would have been extremely low. So, and as I say, no one in Israel was ever killed by a scud missile attack. So that's what I meant when I made that comment.

    Saddam Hussein's rejection of diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis led to the decision to restore Kuwait's sovereignty by military force. The ensuing air war and the effects of the economic embargo decimated Iraq's military infrastructure, severed communication and supply lines, smashed weapons arsenals, and destroyed morale. Overall, the coalition air campaign accumulated a total of 109,876 sorties over the 43-day war, an average of 2,555 sorties per day. Of these, over 27,000 targeted Scuds, airfields, air defenses, electrical power, biological and chemical weapons, headquarters, intelligence assets, communications, the Iraqi army, and oil refining. One can get some perspective on the scope of the Gulf air war by comparing it to some predecessors. The following table presents U.S. Army Air Forces, and U. S. Third Army again demonstrated its professionalism during Operations DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM in 1990/1991. With the Iraqi invasion in August 1990, Third Army would once again lead soldiers into combat.
    Then commanded by Lieutenant General John J. Yeosock, Third Army began deploying from its Atlanta headquarters in August 1990 to assume its role as U.S. Army Forces Central Command (ARCENT), the senior Army headquarters in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War.
    ARCENT's initial mission was to build combat power in the region, defend critical oil and port facilities in eastern Saudi Arabia, and to transition to a defense in sector. Third Army was responsible for building the forward logistical base to support arriving Army units. The support base for these units was in the United States, a distance of 12,000 miles/31 days by sea or 7,400 miles/14 hours by air.
    During the first 90 days of DESERT SHIELD, ARCENT coordinated the reception and sustainment of a force equal to what had taken a year to deploy during the Vietnam War.
    With the president's announcement in November to deploy more units for a possible offensive, ARCENT put the final touches on its ground plan.
