Culture
The visual arts, especially painting and sculpture, are highly developed and can be seen at special exhibitions in the capital. International success has greeted poet and novelist ER Braithwaite and the British-based actor Norman Beaton. Cricket and football (soccer) are the major outdoor sports, while the national indoor pursuit is dominoes. The majority of Afro-Guyanese are Christian, usually Anglican, and there's also a handful of Black Muslims. Most of the East Indian population is Hindu, but there's a sizeable Muslim minority. Guyanese food is distinctive and usually based on seafood or creole dishes like pepperpot, a spicy stew cooked in bitter cassava juice. Added to this are East Indian dishes such as curries and roti . Chinese food is also common. Beverages include Banks beer, local rum, brandy and whisky, and delicious fruit punches.

Culture
Cultural Achievements Guyana's cultural expression reflects its separate ethnic contributions and has a regional rather than a universal orientation. A number of its best-known novelists have lived abroad, including Edgar Mittelholzer, The Kwayana Family Trilogy , which focuses on one family through 350 years of Guyana's history; Christopher Nicole, Ratoon ; Jan Carew, Black Midas ; Roy Heath, Orealla; and E.R. Braithwaite, To Sir With Love , which details his experiences as a black high school teacher in a white London slum. His work was praised for its hopeful view of difficult race relations and became the subject of a major motion picture. Another prominent, avant-garde writer is Wilson Harris, The Palace and the Peacock . Additionally, Churamanie Bissundyal, a writer is also becoming better known in writing circles the world over. Among the country's outstanding poets are Martin Carter, Poems of Resistance, and A.J. Seymour, who wrote I Was Born in Georgetown . Denis Williams has gained fame as a painter, novelist, curator, and anthropologist. Philip Moore is well known for his wood sculptures, which show African influence. Art takes many forms in Guyana, but its dominant themes are the Amerindians, the ethnic diversity of the population and the physical beauties of Guyana. The works of Stanley Greaves, Ronald Savory, Philip Moore and the late Aubrey Williams have been much in demand in the last two decades. Savory's works in particular have brought the hard-to-reach interior within view of urban dwellers.

    INDIGENOUS CULTURE
The indigenous population comprises a number of ethnic groups: Arawak (Lokono), Warao, Karinya (Carib), Kapon (Akawaio), Kapon (Patamona), and Pemon (Arekuna), all occupying the North-west and the coastal region between the Demerara and Corentyne rivers. The South is occupied by Carib-speaking Makusi, Wapisiana, and WaiWai.
The economy of all the groups is based primarily on manioc horticulture, supplemented by hunting and fishing. Manioc-based subsistence has guaranteed the survival of key traditional arts and industries, notably architecture, ceramics, basketry, featherwork, beadwork and weaving. The raw materials employed in the manufacture of all artifacts originally came mainly from the forests. Many materials were seasonal, for example the seeds of the crab-nut tree, used for body paint. Particular inorganic raw materials, such as pottery clay, tempering materials used in pottery manufacture such as sand, decomposed granite, mica, etc., or a particular kind of stone suitable for the manufacture of grater chips, may be rare or unobtainable in a given area, and this placed specific values on the associated products. Trade, based on the barter of such artifacts as Karinya pottery, Wapisiana cotton hammocks or Warao canoes and fibre hammocks, survived into the middle of the 20th century. Two ceramic traditions both originating from the north-west, have characterized the indigenous groups, other styles of pottery in the south being of only local importance.

Country Info Guyana Introduction Guyana General Data Guyana Maps Guyana Culture ... Guyana Time and Date Guyana Culture Back to Top Until its independence, Guyana was tied culturally more closely to Suriname and French Guiana than to the rest of South America. Guyana was settled by East Indians, who still speak Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil dialects; black Africans; and a few Europeans, mostly from Britain. These various ethnic strains have remained fairly distinct, and today each group has its own style of life and culture, although the ties of nationhood tend to bind them together. Postindependence Guyanese culture still bears the imprint of its colonial heritage. Guyanese were taught to respect and covet European values during the colonial era, and this has not changed despite government exhortation. Yet ethnic identity continues to be important, with daily life centring around ethnic and family groups; the mother- and grandmother-dominated family among blacks differs from the father-oriented East Indian family. Men of both groups often commute long distances to work along the coastal highway. Daily dress normally does not distinguish one group from another. Amerindian culture, which remains uninfluenced by national politics, is recognized as an important element in Guyanese museum displays and as an inspiration in local music and painting. Cultural institutions are concentrated in Georgetown, including the Guyana Museum, which includes the Guyana Zoo, with its impressive collection of animals from northern South America. Guyanese writers have made noteworthy contributions to literature; the works of Wilson Harris, A.J. Seymour, and Walter Rodney are among the foremost.
