Guyana's Culture
Colonial Period
  • During the period of Colonial rule, there was much more similarity, in a cultural sense, between Guyana (then British Guiana), Suriname (then Dutch Guiana) and French Guiana (which still bears the name and is part of France) than to the rest of South America, which was and still is predominantly Spanish in culture.
    • The Native South American Indians (Amerindian) Tribes were the original inhabitants. Slavery brought numerous Black Africans to The Caribbean and to Guyana's shores. The practice of Indentureship brought East Indians, who still speak Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil dialects. Chinese, Portuguese and a few other White Europeans, mostly from Great Britain, round out the population diversity. These various ethnic groups have remained somewhat distinct, but the lines are continuously being blurred. Each group brings to the table its own style of life and culture, but an extremely strong nationalistic pride has forged and bound them into

The Makusí (Macussí or Macushí) are the most prominent of the savanna peoples. Sizable concentrations of Amerindians inhabit the far west along the border with Venezuela and Brazil. They are rarely seen in the populated coastal areas, although a few have interbred with blacks and East Indians. April 8, 2003 4:24 AM For a South American country, Guyana presents a unique profile: it is English-speaking, and cricket playing is common. A mixture of British and Dutch in its legal and other internal systems is a legacy of past colonization, which has given Guyana its orientation towards the Caribbean economically, historically, and culturally. It is a member of the British Commonwealth, and the headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
What distinguishes Guyana fundamentally from the West Indian Islands is that the 'ocean' of tropical forest behind Guyana's coastlands is not a mere surrounding or border. The great interior has always been a factor, and now promises at last to become the factor, in Guyana's development, as indeed it was at the beginning. Not only was the interior home for thousands of years to Guyana's indigenous people, but also the first Dutch trading posts and forts were established up-river, giving the colonists strategic access to the people and resources of the interior. Guyana must thank, or curse, sugar, for turning its development away from the interior to the muddy coastlands, and the Dutch, with their particular expertise in land reclamation and sea-defense, who were the first Europeans to arrive.
Guyana's hinterland with its myriad species of flora and fauna, and its mostly untapped lumber and mineral resources, is becoming a focal area for national development. In addition, the construction of the long-awaited road to Brazil is now being given serious attention. This new infrastructure will give Guyana its connection to the great road networks of the continent and potentially begin a more integrated development plan.

Chief Rock represents First Nations culture in Guyana
On September 13, 2002, Canadian First Nations performer Sino General arrived in Georgetown, Guyana to perform for Amerindian Heritage month. Invited as a special guest, this Native American Music Award nominee from the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, demonstrated the dynamism of Aboriginal Canadian performing arts to the Guyanese people. In Canada, Sino General spends much of his time sharing his deep knowledge of First Nations cultural traditions with school groups across the country. During his visit, he had the opportunity to carry out these activities in Guyana, speaking school audiences and giving demonstrations of pow-wow dancing. His tour extended from urban schools in the Georgetown area to the remotest regions near the Brazilian and Venezuelan borders. Sino General also has a rap career as Chief Rock. For Chief Rock music and video clips, see his website: www.chiefrockmusic.com

(1) I support Mr. Sukdeo's critique of Mr. Parris's story - Daniel F. Kissoon

I wish to give my support to everything that was so feelingly expressed by Mr Gokarran Sukdeo (23/01/02) over the derogatory racial nickname used in the "Christmas Annual." I am dismayed that Mr Haslyn Parris and Dr Ian McDonald should display such insensitivity for a cheap laugh. I am doubly dismayed at Mr Ruel Johnson's defence of them and himself for using the slur...

(2) Many voices have been cowed and stilled by the chilling effect of this "racist" tag, but to his credit, not Naipaul - Ravi Dev
First Mr. Bakr played ducks and drakes with over 2000 words ("Walcottian words", crooned one calypsonian/culturalist-in-exile, with more profundity than he intended) around the issue of Naipaul's fitness for the Nobel in Literature. [SN 12-2-01]. Even though he pronounced on all sorts of "maledictions" supposedly committed by Naipaul to make him a most unsuitable recipient, "racism" was not in the litany of enumerated sins. Now in his riposte to his critics, [SN 12-21-01], Mr. Bakr has had to fall back on the hoary shibboleth first conjured up by some Caribbean intellectuals - that Naipaul is "racist"...
The award of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature to Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul has provoked a good deal of sarcasm, venom and hate.

"Guyana"
Starting with a historical tour of the garden city of Georgetown, followed by an exciting overland journey through the land of the Caribs and Arawaks, our journey ends at Shell Beach where we become part of the native family, who manages the Sea Turtle Conservation Project, featured in documentaries by both National Geographic and Omni Films.
Our journey utilises every means of Guyana's transport: from aircraft to traditional wooden boats powered by non-traditional outboard motors. Accommodation ranges from comfortable Mission guesthouses to camping under a canopy of stars. We boat on rivers large and small, from the mighty Essequibo (whose estuary is 21 miles wide) to the tiny Moruca, where the overhanging mangroves make you feel as if you are in a cathedral. The contrasting landscapes through which we pass vary from lush green agricultural fields to seemingly endless savannahs and pristine rainforest. The Itinerary DAY 1:
Arrive in Guyana and transfer to your hotel in Georgetown.
DAY 2:
Morning city tour of Georgetown. The vibrant character and graceful beauty of Georgetown reflects much of the city's exceptional cultural history and diversity. Designed by the Dutch (and called Stabroek), Guyana's capital has wide, tree-lined avenues, lily-covered canals, and many fine examples of 18th and 19th century colonial buildings. The famous Stabroek Market, once described as a bizarre bazaar, contains every conceivable item from household goods to gold jewellery.

guyana caribbean politics .com Paro and The Spirit Healer Posted March 25th. 2002 by Wyck Williams Incongruous Linkings in Georgetown These days headlines and magazine covers lay bare a world of suicide bombers, packed planes shot like missiles into towers, unspeakable carnage in far-flung but now easily recognizable places - Jerusalem, the West Bank, Kabul, Gujarat. Acts of desperation intended, it's often said, to "send a message" from one raging side to another then roused to answering rage. In our Guyana some situations leap out at us, pleading for equal time and weight of understanding. Take the recent case of Parbattie Kamille Seenauth, 31, known as Paro, described in the press as "the shallow grave victim", her body found in a Georgetown backyard on February 15, 2002; and Pamela Alves, 41, also known as Patricia Grenville, the "shallow grave suspect", reputedly "a spiritual healer", in whose backyard the body was buried. It seems that months earlier Paro had left her home in Charity, Pomeroon "seeking a better life in the city". "Her body was discovered…after neighbors tipped off police that someone was seen burying a corpse in a shallow grave in the yard.

The name is derived from an Amerindian word meaning "the celebration of a job well done," and 'Mash' as the festival is often called, is a celebration indeed. Guyanese living abroad often arrange their yearly visits to coincide with the weeklong carnival, which incorporates steel band competitions and sporting events. Masquerade bands appear in the streets and in competitions at National Park, performing dance routines that are a vivid reminder of Guyana's African heritage. Traditional masquerade characters include the bouncer like Mad Bull, Mother Sally (a parody of a plantation lady); flouncers, who beg for money using intricate dance moves; and stick-fighters. Calypsos laced with barbed social commentary are an integral part of 'Mash' celebrations, which culminate in the coronation of the king or queen for the year.
