Greetings! As the association prepares for the New Year much more can be desired from you and the association's leadership. Our rapidly growing membership signals a challenge to meet the demands for change in this society where technology increases our chances to compete in the socio-economic, and political arena at all levels. The Guyana Association is grateful to you for your continued support at all events. Let us resolve to commit our energies and ideas to help build our local association and hence create a brothers resource bank that can provide meaningful assistance for our Guyanese and sisters here and in Guyana in particular. We look forward to your support of the remaining events of the year which include amendment and ratification of the association By-Laws in October and November respectively, a Fashion Show organized by the Culture and Sports Committee, in November, and the Annual Christmas Dance, on December 23, 2000. Best wishes!

Air Jamaica Reports Recovery from September 11 and Begins a Tobago and Guyana Campaign
In the wake of the terrible attacks on America and the resulting fallout in world travel, a Caribbean airline says business has been better than originally anticipated. Air Jamaica marketing executive Allen Chastanet said he believes the carrier will exceed budget for both January and February this year, while advance bookings for March, April, May and June look extremely promising. "The critical question is when do we stop the level of discounting that we are having to do in order to resuscitate this business." Chairman of Air Jamaica, Dr. Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, speaking to travel agents and industry partners in New Jersey last week, said: "Mr. Bin Laden messed up Air Jamaica much less than most people were affected and we never did fall below a 50 percent load factor (after the terrorist attacks)." Chastanet, who is the airline’s senior vice president of marketing and sales, noted that several routes were recovering nicely due to a release of "pent up demand" and people were resuming their travel plans despite the recent warm weather in the United States. In particular, loads to the Dutch island of Curaçao from Montego Bay have been steady while business to Barbados is on the increase. Air Jamaica serves Barbados with non-stop flights from New York and via the Montego Bay hub in Jamaica.

New book from Guyanese Economist, Carl B. Greenidge. "Empowering a peasantry in a Caribbean context: the case of Guyana 1865-1985". UWI Press. Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. 2001. This book makes very interesting reading for expert and layperson alike. It is a study that portrays Guyana as a set of physical and political contrasts and contradictions - contrasts between the beauty of the land and of its rewards, between coast and hinterland and, contradictions between pronouncement and intent, between opportunities and their exploitation. Mr Greenidge draws on the works of a number of well-known Guyanese novelists, current and past - Melville, Shinebourne and Mettleholzer, for example - to illustrate his theme of contradictions and mirages and of the link between the physical and social. This is highly recommended reading and a worthwhile purchase for both the expert and the intelligent observer of Guyana and Caribbean affairs!!

Living and Studying in Guyana
Whether or not this is your first time away from your country, you are probably thinking about the different aspects of living in a new culture. Most grantees find that they must make some adjustments, since many things are new or unfamiliar. The process you will go through may be difficult, but it is also exciting and contributes to your personal enrichment and understanding of other ways of life. Adapting to another culture may be frustrating at times, but there are people at your host university and at LASPAU who are able to help. Temporary problems should not discourage you. A growing familiarity with the new culture and with the resources available to you will greatly increase your enjoyment of your surroundings. We suggest that you read the section on Cross-Cultural Adjustment in this guide.

Culture
The visual arts, especially painting and sculpture, are highly developed and can be seen at special exhibitions in the capital. International success has greeted poet and novelist ER Braithwaite and the British-based actor Norman Beaton. Cricket and football (soccer) are the major outdoor sports, while the national indoor pursuit is dominoes. The majority of Afro-Guyanese are Christian, usually Anglican, and there's also a handful of Black Muslims. Most of the East Indian population is Hindu, but there's a sizeable Muslim minority. Guyanese food is distinctive and usually based on seafood or creole dishes like pepperpot, a spicy stew cooked in bitter cassava juice. Added to this are East Indian dishes such as curries and roti . Chinese food is also common. Beverages include Banks beer, local rum, brandy and whisky, and delicious fruit punches.

Eusi Kwayana
African Heritage in Guyana by Al Craighton THE
month of February is one of two periods in the year when the country's African heritage is brought into focus in Guyana. While February is designated "African History Month" (sometimes called Black History Month), the focus is renewed in August because of the anniversary of Emancipation in that month, and the narrow interpretation that the abolition of slavery is of exclusive 'African' significance. During these periods there are several references to 'African culture' and, generally, a concentration on performing arts which are considered African. This Guyanese African celebration, however, is hardly as rich as it could easily be because it is usually accompanied by a range of misconceptions and a fair degree of superficiality in many quarters. African culture generally, and African culture in a Guyanese context, have much wider meaning and significance than is normally appreciated. Too often, the impression is given that we are referring to a homogenous mass from one continent and one culture. Then, there is a tendency to limit this African focus to what may be contained in artistic performance. (In Guyanese English, a 'culture show' means a concert with a variety of music, dance and drama, while a "cultural item" is a theatrical performance.)

(24 October 2002) OPENING REMARKS BY HON. GAIL TEIXERA, MINISTER OF CULTURE, YOUTH AND SPORT, GUYANA, TO THE SEVENTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, 23 OCTOBER 2002, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA Chairman; Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett; Ministers of Government and Representatives of Member States; Diplomatic Corp; Members of International and Regional Organs; Ladies and Gentlemen. It is with pleasure, on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, that I welcome my distinguished Colleague Ministers and their delegations to Guyana as we convene this Seventh Meeting of the Council For Human and Social Development (COHSOD). I want to also take this opportunity to welcome and also to wish the incoming Chair of this body, the Hon. Walter Sandriman, Minister of Education and Community Development of Suriname much success as he Chairs this Meeting. Ladies and Gentlemen this meeting of COHSOD is being convened at a critical juncture in our region’s development. Indeed, it seems that the very existence of our societies seem to be under severe threat – intensification of sophisticated criminal activity sometimes motivated by the upsurge in drug trafficking; the increase in the spread of HIV /AIDS, the evident downturn in our economies and even the inundation by our unprepared societies for the high levels of deportation from the North. At the same time the region continues to witness the increase departure of our skilled working population to the more developed countries.
