    Research Interests
Within the community of academic geographers I am recognized as a feminist geographer with an interest in urban, political and development geographies. My research activities therefore are based in both 'First World' and 'Third World' contexts, and are framed analytically by post-colonial and anti-racist considerations. At the same time my interest in political issues in geography led to co-editing (with Professor E. Kofman) a special edition of the journal Political Geography on gender issues. It was the first comprehensive feminist critique of this sub-field of geography. Currently I am co-editing what will be the first book on feminist perspectives in political geography with Professor E. Kofman and Dr. L. Stahaeli. Further reflecting my interests in political geography I am currently working on a single-authored book, entitled Guyana: An Uncertain Geography. This meshes the traditional concerns of political geography - such as boundaries, territorial issues, electoral systems - with those of post colonial geographies - such as encounters with the 'other', the gendered and racialised contours of imperialism and the creation of new democratic spaces and practices. Since the mid-1980s I have also been working in the Caribbean, most specifically in Guyana, on gender issues in development, specifically on women's access to urban-based resources, their engagement in politics and empowerment. This research has involved working collaboratively with a Guyanese women's organisation called the Red Thread Women's Development Programme, based in the capital city of Georgetown. We have worked together on such topics as the gendered impacts of

    GENERAL INFORMATION
    GEOGRAPHY
Located on the Northern coast of South America, and bordered by Venezuela on the West, Suriname on the East, and Brazil on the South, Guyana has a land area slightly smaller than Idaho. Originally called British Guyana, it received its independence from the UK in 1966. Its terrain is mostly rolling highlands, with a low coastal plain, and a savannah in the South. The many rivers contain frequent water falls, making water navigation almost impossible except for short distances. Its climate is tropical, hot and humid, with two rainy seasons (May to mid-August, mid-November to mid-January). Of its total land mass, 83% is forest and woodland. Though 3% of its land is arable, none is dedicated to permanent crops. Mining communities scattered throughout the jungle mine bauxite, gold, diamonds and hardwood timbers.
    PEOPLE
Guyana s total population is 723,774. Of its population 62% lie between the ages of 15 to 64, with only 5% over the age of 65. In spite of the fact that its birth rate of 19.41 births per 1,000 is higher than its death rate of 7.34 deaths per 1,000, it has a negative population growth of -0.81%. This is explained by the fact that the net migration rate is negative at -20.19 migrants/1,000 population (1995 estimate). The infant mortality rate is: 47.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. Ethnically diverse, Guyana has an East Indian population of 51%, black and mixed 43%, Amerindian 4%, European and Chinese 2%. Diversity of religions also is a characteristic with its population being Christian 57%, Hindu 33%, Muslim 9%, and other 1% . Its official language is English, but Amerindian dialects are spoken throughout the interior. Of those age 15 and over, 96% have received some type of education.

geography and Geographical Features. region, located in the tropics, extends in abroad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to guyana and Suriname
    http://www.welcometothecaribbean.com/geography.htm
Welcome to the Caribbean Home Page Welcome WTTC News Business ... Vegetation Geography and Geographical Features Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology.
It is to be noted that Dominica, St. Vincent and most of St. Kitts have no white sand beaches. The volcanic ash that characterizes these islands is extremely fertile. Historically, St. Kitts has produced sugar cane with yields comparable to those of high yield sugar-producing countries, like Australia and Cuba. The verdant green of the valleys in St. Vincent is an indication of the fertility of the soil in that island.
