The 16-year-old pushed two-time world champion and favourite Ivan Ivankov of Belarus into second with the bronze going to Jordan Jovtchev of Bulgaria In a tight contest Feng, the youngest member of the Chinese team, was the most consistent performer, scoring a combined 56.211 points, with Ivankov just behind on 56.124 and Jovtchev, bronze medallist in 1999, on 56.085. "My name is Feng Jing and I come from China," joked the youngster to those who rushed to find out more on this unknown gymnast. The newcomer, who is the Chinese youth champion, was called up following the decision of the country's top stars to stay home for the national championships. But the newly-crowned champion said that decision was part of a strategy by China - the five-time world and Olympic team champions - to build a strong team of up-and-coming world-beaters.

Navy Gymnastics History... Navy was one of the first collegiate institutions to field a competitive gymnastics team, starting in 1907. The Midshipmen competed in the Intercollegiate Gymnastics Association (IGA) on an informal basis for several years before being admitted as a member in 1920. In the period following World War I, Navy dominated the IGA, winning six-straight league championships from 1920-25 and posting undefeated dual meet records in that period as well. In 1925, the IGA was dissolved, and the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League (EIGL) was formed. Navy went on to win league titles in 1954 and 1961. During the mid-1970's, gymnastics was revolutionized. Where a single flip was satisfactory during the earlier days, multiple flips and twists took their place. During this new area of gymnastics, Navy continued to emerge as one of the top teams, winning league titles from 1987-89. Even as gymnastics continues to become more difficult, Navy is confident that it will be able to create and maintain a team that has potential for top rankings not only in the EIGL, but in the nation as well. The Navy Gymnatics Team culminated its 1998 Season by winning the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships! Head Coach, Dr. Sho Fukushima was selected as the coach of the year.

History of the Sport of Gymnastics Gymanstics, as an activity sport, has been around for over 2000 years but as an competitive sport it is a little more than 100 years old. Mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various clubs and ethnic groups such as the Turvereins and Sok ols. While it was slow-growing in the club area, it was fast-growing sport in the Turvereins and Sokols. In 1830s, the sport of gymnastics was introduced to United States and its school systems by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Franci s Lieber. In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed, later was renamed to Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation. This organization pioneered the international competition. The Amature Athletic Union (AAU) was formed in United Sta tes in 1883. Along with other amature spotts in United States, this organization took over the control of the gymnastics in U.S. Various "championships" started to develop by various clubs and organizations at about the same time during 1880s. The first large-scale competition was the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. There Germany have been the dominant team by almost sweeping every medal. Five countries have participapted in this event. Men's competitions included horizontal bar, parall el bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault.

Ray Corn Alma Mater: Northern Colorado, 1971 (26th season) Ray Corn has created and maintained a tradition of success in his 25 years at Utah State, both in the gym and in the classroom. As the only coach in USU’s Division I gymnastics history, he has led the Aggies to the postseason 24 times in his 25 years in Logan, including five trips to the national championships. Corn owns an overall record of 397-359-2, with a regular-season record of 339-212-2. In 1978, Corn took a club-level Utah State gymnastics team and transformed it into an AIAW power, finishing 30-4 in his first season. The next year, the Aggies made the first of four consecutive trips to the AIAW National Championships, finishing as high as ninth in 1982. In 1991, USU returned to the national championship meet, now under the supervision of the NCAA. In each of the last 17 years, USU has qualified for the NCAA Regional competition. Utah State first participated in the Big West Conference gymnastics championship in 1992, winning the title. Since, the Aggies claimed the Big West championship three times — in 1996, 1998 and 2001. Corn was named the Midwest Regional Coach of the Year in 1991, earned Big West Co-Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and was named Big West Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. He also earned coach of the year honors in the High Country Athletic Conference in 1986, 1987 and 1988.
