John Spini Position:
Head Coach
Experience: 23rd Year Alma Mater: Arizona State '76 One of the most successful coaches in NCAA women’s gymnastics history and in the annals of Arizona State University, John Spini returns in 2003 for his 23rd season as head coach of Sun Devil gymnastics. Spini is one of 11 coaches all-time, including football’s Frank Kush and baseball’s Jim Brock, to offer 20 or more years of service at ASU. In that span, he has made women’s gymnastics one of the winningest programs in school history. Over 22 years, Spini has a career regular season record of 279-100-2. That’s a winning percentage of .735, tops among active ASU coaches and 10th all-time. His teams have been especially dominant in front of their home crowds, going 145-21-1 (.871) in Tempe during his tenure. Just last season, ASU set a school record with a team score of 197.850 versus arch-rival Arizona at Wells Fargo Arena. The squad also set a school record on the balance beam of 49.650, led by Rhonda Robinette’s perfect 10.0 performance. In 2001, the Sun Devils topped No. 1 UCLA at Wells Fargo Arena (196.350-196.000), handing the eventual national champions their only regular season loss while continuing a home meet winning streak that lasted until the Sun Devils’ final regular season contest of the year.

History of Rhythmic Gymnastics
Rhythmic gymnastics combines ballet and creative movements to music, while working with ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes and clubs in a choreographed dance-and-tumble routine. It has a lot more dance than artistic gymnastics. Everything is done on the floor with far different routines and different music. There are two kinds of gymnastics: rhythmic gymnastics and artistic gymnastics. The kind of gymnastics most of us are familiar with is artistic gymnastics. Women's artistic gymnastics includes uneven bars, balance beam, vault and floor exercise. The kind of gymnastics I am going to talk about is rhythmic gymnastics which includes ball, hoop, ribbon, rope, clubs and sometimes floor exercise ( I will go into these in more detail later). Gymnastics, rhythmic and artistic combined, started in Europe during the eighteenth century as one sport and over time gradually developed into two different yet similar sports. Rhythmic gymnastics started as an independent competitive sport in the early nineteen fifties by the Russians. Then in nineteen sixty three the first rhythmic gymnastics world championship was held in Europe. Even though rhythmic gymnastics has its own world championships it did not become an Olympic medal sport until nineteen eighty four. This is partly why rhythmics is such a little known and hardly recognized sport in the U.S.

History
Trampolining dates to the 1930s when American George Nissen developed a prototype trampoline in his garage. Men and women will compete in individual trampolining events in Sydney. The sport requires power as athletes need to clear the surface of the trampoline by up to six metres in order to perform manoeuvres. The top performers are able to achieve up to two seconds of air time in which to tumble, twist and turn. It wasn't until the 1960s that the first World Championships was held, and the sport's governing body was formed in 1965. The United States was the early pace setter in trampolining, but in recent years European nations have overtaken the US. Russia, Great Britain and Germany are likely to be the major forces in Sydney.

Marcia Frederick was the first American woman to win the World Gymnastics Championship. She won in 1978 on the uneven bars. Olga Korbut of the Soviet Union inspired thousands of girls to take up gymnastics after she won two gold medals and one silver medal in the 1972 Olympics. She was later named Female Athlete of the Year. In the 1976 Olympics Nadia Comaneci of Romania became the first gymnast in Olympic history to score a perfect 10.0. She did this in the floor exercise. She went on to record six more perfect scores during those olympics. In 1984 16-year-old Mary Lou Retton of West Virginia became the youngest gymnast to win a gold medal. Her perfect performance on the vault earned her the Olympic gold medal in the Women's All-Around event. Shannon Miller is now the most decorated female American gymnast of all time. She has seven Olympic medals altogether, two gold, two silver, and three bronze. Only three American woman, swimmers

The Sport of Gymnastics
Artistic History
Gymnastics, as an activity, has existed for over 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just a little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800s, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various school clubs, athletic clubs and ethnic organizations such as the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the United States and its school systems in the 1830s by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed in 1881, then called the Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings, and vault. The first international gymnastics competition outside of the Olympics was held in 1903 in Antwerp, Belgium, and gymnasts from Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands competed in what is now considered the first World Championships. At St. Louis in 1904, the men's team combined competition was added to the Olympic program.

The other two were Olga Korbut and Ludmilla Turischeva . Saadi came from the Asiatic Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan and had a warm and friendly personality that drew people to her. She never won an individual Olympic medal but always contributed strongly to the Soviet team victories in her two Olympics and one world championships. She is shown here doing an aerial walkover forward on the balance beam during the 1973 University Games. She is now head coach at the Cambridge Kips Gymnastics Club in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

History
Although it's quite new as a competitive sport, rhythmic gymnastics is rooted in the very beginning of modern gymnastics. Specifically, it grew out of the Swedish system of free exercise developed in 1814 by Peter Henry Ling. Ling promoted "aesthetic gymnastics," in which students expressed their feelings and emotions through bodily movement. The idea was extended by Catherine E. Beecher, founder of the Western Female Institute in Ohio in 1837. In Beecher's gymnastics program, called "grace without dancing," young women exercised to music, moving from simple calisthenics to more strenuous activities. During the 1880s, Emil Dalcroze of Switzerland developed "eurhythmics," a form of physical training for musicians and dancers, and George Demeny of France created various exercises to music that were designed to promote grace of movement, muscular flexibility, and good posture. All of those strains were combined, around 1900, into the Swedish school of rhythmic gymnastics, which later added more dance elements from Finland. About the same time, Ernest Idla of Estonia established a degree of difficulty for each movement.

    Olympic History: Gymnastics
One of the oldest sports in the Olympics, gymnastics began in ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago. Men gathered at "gymnasiums" the center of activity for the time not only practice the sport, but also to debate about art, literature and philosophy. The major focus of gymnastics focused on finding symmetry between the mind and body by pairing physical exercise with intellectual activity Plato, Aristotle and Homer advocated strengthening qualities of gymnastic activity. Christians of the time considered gymnastics Satanic because of its focus on the body gymnasts performed in the nude at the all-male ancient Games of Olympia. After financial corruption led to the banning of gymnastics in 393 A.D., the sport did not reappear in the public arena until the 16th century. "Artistic" gymnastics came to be in the early 1800s, distinguishing free-flowing styles from the techniques used by the military.
