OLYMPIC HISTORY Gymnastics has been an Olympic sport from ancient times and from the start of the modern Games in 1896. Until 1924, when gymnastics settled into a format not unlike the one we know today for artistic gymnasts, the sport also featured rope climbing, tumbling, club swinging, pole vault and even swimming among its disciplines. At Paris in 1924, men competed in individual and team events on each gym apparatus. The women followed in Amsterdam in 1928. Since then, the dominant force has been the Soviet Union, while the former Soviet bloc countries posed the biggest threat. China, too, with its diminutive talent and aptitude for harsh regimes of discipline, is a force to be reckoned with in gymnastic pursuits, though its dominance on the diving boards is not replicated so rigidly in the gymnasium. Two of the most famous gymnasts in history are both Russian. Larysa Latynina remains the most medalled Olympian in history, with 18 medals between 1956 and 1964, including nine gold, five silver and four bronze. Olga Korbut, the diminutive star of the 1972 Games stole more hearts than she won gold medals but her love affair with the media was one of the highlights of the Munich Games.

ANCIENT ORIGINS GYMNASTS BOUNCE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Gymnastics, one of those few sports that can claim a classical birth, is not what it was in ancient times. For a start, the athletes no longer perform naked as they did at the Olympiad of old, "gymnos" being the Greek word for "naked". Secondly, to go by monosyllabic comments made at post-victory press conferences, there appears to be little left to remind us of the original purpose of the sport; the Greeks believed that symmetry of mind and body was possible only when the physical was balanced by the intellectual. Then there's the fact that trampolining will bounce the sport into the 21st century in Sydney. The gymnasium of ancient Greece, where the sport was born, was a place of cultural, artistic, musical and philosophical well-being, and gymnastics was an activity advocated by various luminaries, including Plato, Aristotle and Homer, though the Greeks were not alone in the gym in those early days. The sport was also used for training soldiers in China, India and Persia.

The first trampoline World Championships were held in 1964, and trampoline was first recognized as a sport in its own right in the United States in 1967. Description of Events TRAMPOLINE Trampoline routines are performed on 7'x 14' web or string beds that can propel the gymnast up to 30 feet in the air. A competitor takes as many preliminary bounces as necessary for height and control, before beginning the first of 10 skills in a routine. Two routines are performed, a compulsory and a voluntary. The compulsory routine must include four required elements, plus six other skills chosen by the athlete. The second routine is a 10-skill voluntary, made up of single, double or triple somersaults with multiple twists. No skill may be repeated within either routine. A successful routine will show consistency of height, proper technique and a minimum deviation from the center of the bed. The routine must end under control in an upright position. SYNCHRONIZED TRAMPOLINE Synchronized trampoline demands the same athletic skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Athletes perform two routines, a compulsory and a voluntary. Using two trampolines, two athletes perform identical 10-skill routines at the same time. In this most artistic event, each performs a mirror image of the other, doubling the visual beauty of the competition. Sunburst Gymnastics was established in 1979 in a small garage in Oregon City, Oregon with enough room for a balance beam, vaulting horse and a small tumbling area. The History of The St. Albert Gymnastics Club St. Albert Gymnastics Club is a not-for-profit, community-based organization governed by a volunteer board of 12 members. The Club is currently operating seven days per week and its membership is in excess of 500 members. The Club employs approximately 37 part-time coaches, two part-time program heads, and one full time administrator. The Club was formed in January, 1975 when a group of parents felt that there was a need for a gymnastics club in St. Albert. A market survey was done to determine the interest in gymnastics in the community. On October, 1975, the St. Albert Gymnastics Club was incorporated under the Societies Act in the Province of Alberta. The Club began offering its services in Lorne Akins school with the use of the school's equipment and was subsequently located in a number of schools such as Paul Kane, William D. Cuts, Bertha Kennedy, St. Albert High, and Sir George Simpson Junior High. While in Sir George Simpson, the Club's registration increased to over 225 members, employing approximately 15 coaches and two part-time program heads. Because of limited space and time constraints imposed by the school, the Club was unable to grow to meet the ever-increasing demand from the community. The Board decided the time had come to move into a permanent facility. In December of 1990, with the help of many volunteers, 7,500 sq ft. at #12, 8 Riel Drive was leased and renovated to become the new home of the St. Albert Gymnastics Club.

History Coaches, Won-Lost Records The roots of a richly successful women's intercollegiate gymnastics program at Seattle Pacific University can be traced back to 1954, when the recently-completed Brougham Pavilion was the site of the first major meet conducted west of the Mississippi River. The inaugural women's meet, the AAU Pacific Northwest Open, featured a wide array of events which included the flying rings in addition to today's traditional disciplines. At that time, there was no balance beam on the premises, so Ken Foreman, the Seattle Pacific athletic director at the time, constructed one from a piece of lumber. The finished beam measured the required four inches in width, but was over 10 inches tall. It was Foreman, a former NCAA champion gymnast and world record-holder in the 20-foot rope climb, who organized the event. The meet, which later became known as the Washington Open in the Sixties, became an annual fixture, attracting most of the region's major clubs. The sport began to take a more permanent foothold at SPU in 1972. George Lewis, a renowned local coach, international authority and founder of Gymnastics Incorporated, moved his club from the Seattle YMCA to Brougham Pavilion's auxiliary gym.

This Club has had outstanding success in the 21 years since it was established. Former Olympian Bernie de Roo, who represented Australia at both the Rome and Tokyo Games, and his wife Jenny, have coached thousands of local children in a range of gymnastic skills from power tumbling to floor skills and trampolining. Many have won State and National championships and have represented Australia overseas.
