2.ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION
2.3.TOURISM AND CULTURE
Yesterday and today
Up to the 1950s and 60s, Haiti was the darling of the Southern islands, the Pearl of the West Indies.
Many countries depend upon it for a large percentage of their revenues and make it one of the principal orientations of their development. Unlike other Caribbean countries, Haiti has not put in enough effort to make tourism a first-tier industry in its economy.
Whereas revenues from tourism represent 3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GNP) of Haiti, such revenues represent 50% of the GNP of Bahamas and 24% of the GNP Of Jamaica. The estimated expenditures of visitors to Haiti was only $75 million US in 1989 as opposed to $1.23 billion US in the Bahamas, $750 million US in the Dominican Republic and $539 million US in Jamaica.
The number of tourists per capita in Haiti is the lowest in the Caribbean, already in 1988, the country was welcoming only 2 tourists per 100 residents, whereas the average throughout the Caribbean is roughly 39 visitors per 100 residents.
Haiti has a tremendous potential for tourism investments. The richness of historical sites that dot the country, which are sorely lacking in the Dominican Republic, are but one attraction. Its rich literature and culture are unequaled in the Caribbean.

Taking Haiti

Military Occupation and the Culture of U.S. Imperialism, 1915-1940
by Mary A. Renda
Chapter 1 Introduction
An occupation is, in one sense, a temporary arm of the state created to carry out a series of specific tasks. In this case, those tasks were to bring about political stability in Haiti, to secure U.S. control over Haiti with regard to U.S. strategic interests in the Caribbean, and to integrate Haiti more effectively into the international capitalist economy. Of course, supporters of the occupation, and those responsible for it, proposed that these goals would also bring about specific gains for Haiti. They pointed, for example, to the work of the Navy Medical Corps and to the construction of roads, bridges, buildings, and telephone systems under the marines' supervision.[4] With these changes, U.S. policy makers indeed sought to create an infrastructure to serve as the foundation for economic development and modernization. They also professed the hope that on this basis a new Haitian democracy would flourish. On the ground, cross-cultural dynamics complicated Washington's script for the occupation. Some members of the Haitian elite initially cooperated with the U.S. military, even viewing their presence as potentially helpful, but other Haitians, long suspicious of foreign powers and of government in general, were less eager to play their parts. Many Haitians adopted a watchful stance in relation to the invading

April 8, 2003 3:44 AM Geography and Climate
The Republic of Haiti is located 750 miles south of Miami, sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Approximately 8 million people live in an area about the size of Maryland.
The climate is tropical with temperatures ranging from 60-95 degrees Fahrenheit. Haiti has tropical coasts and large valleys where it is very hot and humid. In the higher elevations it can be very cool at night.
Once a forest covered island, many of Haiti's hillsides are today severely eroded due to uncontrolled exploitation of the natural resources.
Economy and Government
The majority of the population still resides in rural areas and depends on agriculture for their livelihood. The land that is available however, is often unsuitable for agriculture due to poor soil quality and loss of topsoil. At least 30 percent of the land being farmed is located on slopes that need to be protected from erosion or on land that would be better used as pasture-land, for tree planting, or left fallow.
The land available per person is steadily decreasing due to population growth. People work on land that has been divided and redivided from generation to generation with little left for each family to farm. Many of the young emigrate from the rural areas to the larger towns and cities, causing these areas to grow rapidly.

New recognition of Vodou's role in Haitian culture
By Kathie Klarreich, The Christian Science Monitor, 6 April 2000
PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI - A young man, forlorn about his love life, stands in his shorts in front of the cross of Bawon Samdi, who in Vodou tradition heads the family of spirits of the cemetery. A Vodou priest, using herbal mixtures and chicken feathers, performs a ritual to cleanse the man's body and spirit. When the service is complete, the young man changes clothes, pays the priest, and heads home. For many in the West and in upper Haitian society, voodoo, or Vodou, evokes a Hollywood stereotype of black magic and dolls stuck with pins. But for Vodou supporters, what was once an underground practice dating back to slave days is finally being acknowledged as a bona fide religion and recognized for its role in defining Haitian culture. Vodou, which has no written scriptural text, is an amalgam of the mixed African, native, and Anglo-Saxon cultures of colonial Haiti. The Roman Catholic and Protestant churches in Haiti have a long history of trying to discourage Vodou, seeing aspects of the faith as incompatible with their basic tenets. These include the worship of many spiritual beings, or lwa; a belief in possession; the use spells and incantations for good and, in some cases, for evil; and the use of animal sacrifices for some ceremonies.

http://www.teenink.com/Past/2002/June/Travel/Haiti.html
T he streets are rubble, hand-chipped from quarry rock by breaking men, grateful for jobs no matter how laborious. The smell, or stench, rather, is rotten and dusty, a bit salty from the sea. Garbage, chickens and the black tarp roofs of the makeshift huts inhabitants call home along the streets make for an interesting, moving mosaic of the Third World. This is a different realm.
The people here are dark, all of them: dark in their skin color, dark in their future, dark in the soot of work and scavenging for survival hidden under their nails, and dark in the depth of poverty and struggle swimming deep and low in the rich brown of their irises.
Never are they dark in their hope, though. Nor in their smile or in the undying glitter radiating from their laughter-creased eyes.
These are the people of Haiti: the children with needle-thin arms and fat bellies full of nothing, the mothers with needle-thin arms and fat bellies full of starving children, the old, the young, the dying, the ever-hopeful. These are the people of Haiti.
The decision to travel there was spontaneous and instantly seemed to sit well in my soul. It was on the way home from a weekend working at a homeless shelter that going to Haiti was mentioned. Phil, my new youth pastor, was a man of refreshing intensity and the will to push us from the comfort and idleness of ignorance into uncomfortable new growth territory. The trip Phil planned would take him into an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I was anxious to accompany this man I so respected to a world I had never seen.

Culture Shock and Haiti
Bob Corbett
I've been thinking some about the cultural shock that comes from returning from Haiti . I keep hearing this from many people in our groups and others too. But, I haven't heard anyone do much reflecting on exactly what's going on, what's valuable in this experience, what's merely some romantic urge for OTHERNESS . So, I thought I'd begin the process. Your comments and thoughts would be appreciated. I often feel a sort of vague and general dis-ease when I return from Haiti. I have named it a dislike of American culture, or a cultural re-entry shock. But these labels explain little, and the first seems simply false. I have lived and continue to live in the United States and I am much too happy a person to continue on in this happiness if I'm truly living in a culture I dislike. What's going on here? The central difference between life as we encounter it and work with it in Haiti and our lives in the United States has to do with basic survival. Life in Haiti, in the circles of our work and primary concern is basic survival. People struggle for daily food, they scrounge for potable water, they hunt for the basic health care to stay alive, they search for shelter from the rains, bugs, rats or beating sun. They struggle to find part-time work on a daily basis. They are underclothed, underfed, undersheltered and undertended. On the other hand, most of us from the middle and upper classes not only have all of these things but we take them for granted, view them as sort of birth right. Our struggles are for growth, security, personal pleasure, entertainment, enrichment, culture etc.
