    Haiti has a strong presence in Cuba, dating back to the late 1790's after the Haitian revolution, when many French moved to Cuba and took the kidnapped Africans with them. From this wave we get the Tumba Francesa and the Haitian roots music in Cuba. Haitian tradition contains a strong strain of Dahomey and Congo, both of which are present in Cuba. Haitian Rada is Cuban Arara, the Dahomey tradition. More recently, Cuba is perhaps the only country to have welcomed so many Haitians fleeing the persecution of the Generals and their savage regime. There are reportedly over 300,000 recent arrivals in Cuba. And Creole, which is still spoken by descendants of the earlier waves, is Cuba's second language. There a number of Haitian roots groups playing in Cuba, including Ban Rrarra and Desandann Today, Cuba has several viable Haitian cultural organizations, includin

Renda Awards Winner of the 2002 John Hope Franklin Prize, American Studies Association Winner of the 2002 Stuart L. Bernath Prize, Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations Winner of the 2002 Albert J. Beveridge Award, American Historical Association The U.S. invasion of Haiti in July 1915 marked the start of a military occupation that lasted for nineteen yearsand fed an American fascination with Haiti that flourished even longer. Exploring the cultural dimensions of U.S. contact with Haiti during the occupation and its aftermath, Mary Renda shows that what Americans thought and wrote about Haiti during those years contributed in crucial and unexpected ways to an emerging culture of U.S. imperialism. At the heart of this emerging culture, Renda argues, was American paternalism, which saw Haitians as wards of the United States. She explores the ways in which diverse Americansincluding activists, intellectuals, artists, missionaries, marines, and politiciansresponded to paternalist constructs, shaping new versions of American culture along the way. Her analysis draws on a rich record of U.S. discourses on Haiti, including the writings of policymakers; the diaries, letters, songs, and memoirs of marines stationed in Haiti; and literary works by such writers as Eugene O'Neill, James Weldon Johnson, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston.

BIBLIOGRAPHY The word voodoo comes from the Fon language of Benin (formerly Dahomey) in West Africa and means "spirit." Storytelling in Haiti is a performance art. The storyteller uses a different voice for each character in the story, and may sing songs as part of the narrative. Culture: Arts and Cultural Values Haiti's uniqueness is reflected in the originality of its paintings, music, and literature. Artists and musicians, drawing from the rich folklife and vitality of the people, have created internationally-recognized works and sounds. Haitian paintings of the "naive" or "primitive" school have long been recognized around the world; works by more famous artists have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and France. Handicrafts such as wood carvings and tapestries also employ this primitive style. Haitian music, like Haiti itself, is an original blend, containing elements of African drum rhythms and European dance music. Haiti has also produced writers, poets, and essayists of international standing. Haitian literature has been written almost exclusively in French; however, with the recognition of Creole as an official language, novels, poems, and plays are being written increasingly in Creole. In 1975, the first novel to be written entirely in Haitian Creole was published;

    HAITI CONTINUES TO EMERGE WITH VODOU Haiti is a nation struggling to emerge from the shackles of colonial rule. Although its freedom was purchased 200 years ago from the French, a new discursive colonization took place, the colonization that results from the constraints of a dominant, hegemonic cultural narrative. In a very real sense, Haitians discarded one dominant narrative only to discover another lurking below the surface. Hurston (1939) chronicles this change when she states, "Haiti has always been two places. First it was the Haiti of the masters and the slaves. Now it is the Haiti of the wealthy and educated mulattoes and the Haiti of the blacks" (p. 73). Hurston also illustrates the regulated class structure that is legitimated by the current social meta-narrative. This current meta-narrative is merely a darker shaded continuation of French rule. Ironically, former Haitian slaves have adopted the power positions previously enjoyed by the French. While the faces have changed, the hierarchical colonial meta-narrative has not. Although the larger hegemonic order in Haiti is of Western descent, it still shares stories and ideas with African societies. However, because Haiti has the distinction of being the "only nation in world history to be created by slaves," it will undoubtedly have some stories of its own (Mintz, 1995, p. 73). Consequently, it will represent its African status differently. Colonial cultural critic F. Fanon theorizes that the prominent influence in shaping the psyche of the black [Haitian] mind, and consequently how this mind creates society, is colonial rule. Colonial rule teaches what is desirable, what determines success, without regard to the culture of the colonized. As a result, colonized people see their future reflected in the faces of colonial power. Fanon (1967) chronicles this process when he states:
