Further to the north, Cordillera Septentrional stretches along the Atlantic coast from Monte Cristi near the Haitian border to San Francisco de Macorís. This mountain range divides the Atlantic coast and the fertile Cibao valley which contains the gold mines that formerly brought Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards rushing back to the island after their initial "discovery" of America. Tourists in the north (Puerto Plata region) should not miss an exploratory day-trip into the magical valleys of Cordillera Septentrional, especially around Jarabacoa, a region called locally the "Dominican Alps.
The Cordillera Oriental, on the east, is the smallest of the three main mountain ranges. Two more mountain ranges are Neiba Sierra and Sierra de Bahoruco both in the southwest of the country. These ranges partially surround the unusual inland saltwater Lake Enriquillo, the lowest point in the Caribbean at 27 meters below sea level.

The second largest nation in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles, with Haiti occupying the western portion. Situated in the heart of the region, between North and South America, the country is bathed by the Caribbean Sea on the south coast and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. With a land area of 48,442 square kilometers, it is larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, all the Virgin Islands and the entire French West Indies put together. The Dominican Republic is approximately the size of the US state of Maryland. To the west are Jamaica and Cuba; Puerto Rico is east beyond the 112-kilometer Mona Passage; and the southern tip of Florida is about 1,000 kilometers away. The DR shares a land frontier of 275 kms with Haiti. Topography
A land of contrasts with towering mountains and rocky cliffs, rain forests, fertile valleys, cacti-studded desert regions, 1,600 kilometers of coastline and around 300 kilometers of prime soft sand beaches. The country is crossed by four rugged mountain ranges bisecting northwest to southeast. The largest is the Cordillera Central with Pico Duarte, the tallest point in the Caribbean, rising over 3,175 meters high. Three large fertile valleys rest between the ranges, one of which holds Lake Enriquillo in the southwest, the lowest point in the Caribbean falling 40 meters below sea level and the only salt water lake in the world inhabited by crocodiles.

The Haiti Project - Help for the Helpless
The Haiti Project is a photographic documentary, in which professional photographer, Larry Davis, invites others to see through the lens of his camera during his one week visit to the third world country of Haiti. Photographs included in the exhibit are comprised of numerous portraits of the Haitian people and a number of landscapes and buildings which depict the vast differences in the land of Haiti, ranging from the minority of very wealthy to the majority of very poor. Also included in the documentary are several informational pieces relating to the country of Haiti and its people, which will assist in understanding more about the culture of this country and its history. Larry will be traveling to Haiti again in October, 2001 to revisit the areas he visited during this documentary. Several thousand frames of film will be utilized in Larry's return visit, as he continues to document the faces and lives of the Haitian people.

HISTORY
Christopher Columbus discovers the island of Haiti. It is re-named Hispaniola by the Spaniards who established a colony and gold mining operations. The first inhabitants of the islands (Arawas, Tainos, and Caribbean) estimated at a number of approximately one million at the time, are decimated by forced labor; 50 years later, the native Indian population is extinct.
To supplement the extinct Indian labor force, the Spaniards instituted the slave trade of black Africans.
Beginning of the French period. First settlements of adventurers on the Island of La Tortue (Tortuga) and on the North-Western coast of the Island. Violent warfare between Spain and France for control over the island.
By the Ryswick Treaty, Spain granted the occidental part of the island to France, wich rebaptized it Saint-Domingue. The French colonists invested in the sugar plantations economy which, along with coffee and indigo, become the colony's main source of prosperity.
First consequences of the French Revolution and first slave uprisings which lead to the Independence War opposing revolted slaves and Black Freemen to the intervention forces sent by Napoleon Bonaparte. The French troops surrendered to the rebel forces in December 1803.
